23.01.2022 This map showcases the current Chuwar suburb - half in Brisbane City Council and the other in Ipswich City Council - it's no wonder we get very little spent in our area!

21.01.2022 Chuwar....Chu-where? Residents of Chuwar often nd that when someone asks them where they live, and they reply, ‘Chuwar’. The next question becomes ‘Where on earth is Chuwar?’. ... The more-often-than-not response to the question is ‘Colleges Crossing’. How do you explain where Chuwar is when asked?

20.01.2022 Our website www.chuwar.com.au is currently being finalised and will be published in the coming days.

19.01.2022 How was Colleges Crossing named? George Colledge purchased a property on the north side of the river in 1854, directly where the crossing is, and it soon became known as ‘Colledge’s Crossing’. The crossing was at the time the only way in the entire district to ford the river easily, until a bridge was built at Kholo, and then another (with a weir) at the Mt Crosby Pumping Station. The area was a favourite with tourists and residents from right around the area, and remains so.

15.01.2022 Given that the Chuwar suburb is half in Ipswich and half in Brisbane - which Council area do you think we should be in?

13.01.2022 Do you support a suburb name change of Chuwar?

12.01.2022 Chuwar Today: Today, Chuwar has a number of amenities including a service station (on Mt Crosby Rd the other one is actually in Karalee), a length of light industry workshops, including a produce store, two churches, a motorcycle track (closed and now a residential development site), the Tivoli Drive-in Theatre, a Veterinary surgery and the newly expanded, though erroneously named, Karalee Shopping Centre. Chuwar includes the residential Karana Gardens Estate.... The suburb’s two churches are Chuwar Baptist Church, which runs a yearly community day called the Street Party, and Rivers of Life Christian Church, which operates the Tivoli Drivein Theatre and Community Events Centre and market stalls. At the heart of Chuwar is the historically named Colleges Crossing Reserve, built around the crossing itself. It is now a popular park and river crossing on the Brisbane River with walking trails, lookouts, and clean water for swimming and shing. The only issue is that it is only accessible by car, as there are no footpaths leading to it.

11.01.2022 There are 10 great resons to alter the name of Chuwar to Colleges Crossing. They are: 1. To recognise that Chu-War was a parish name, initially given as a holding name. 2. To recognise pioneer George Colledge who held a small holding in the area, and after whom the crossing was named.... 3. To recognise the historical link between Colledge’s Crossing and early explorers, John Oxley and Allan Cunningham 4. To recognise that Chu-War has become a suburb large enough and populous enough to start to develop it’s own character. A name change may have benecial ow on effects to the community itself, by inspiring pride in the historical connections to place that the name ‘College’s Crossing’ imply. 5. Taking advantage of the fact that more people are aware of where College’s Crossing is, but have never heard of Chuwaran essentially unpopular name, due to both its sound and apparent lack of meaning. 6. Restoring the community cohesion-building projects and opportunities that were lost with the move to Ipswich, and again when Karana Downs and Mt Crosby were excised from the area. 7. Reintroduction of the proposed College’s Crossing Sports and Recreation Reserve Club House overlooking College’s Crossing Reserve and the Brisbane River. 8. The development of the College’s Crossing Sports and Recreation Grounds on the site of the former Chuwar waste refuse site, itself a former early open cut coalmine. 9. The potential for the development of the lower area of the College’s Crossing (Chu-War) Sports and Recreation grounds on Langland Street and Lewis Drive to enable the development of a Men’s Shed facility and a Community land regeneration Plant Nursery. 10. While not the driver of change, there is potential for homeowners to benet from raising property values; a potentially welcome boost to the sluggish land values in the suburb that have seen stagnation over the last ve years. 05.01.2022 Did you know...Chuwar is now a suburb built on the banks of the Brisbane River, opposite Karana Downs and Mt Crosby. It is a leafy residential suburb that retains several undeveloped areas. The land lies surrounded by the Brisbane River along almost half of its boundary, and has a roughly symmetrical shape on the map. To the south of Chuwar lies Tivoli, a once active colliery district. Chuwar hugs the river for most part, but actually extends towards the Warrego Highway, from... its more rural areas of Mt Crosby in the north to Colleges Crossing, to the east, Muirlea in the west, and south into the area that most people refer to as Karalee; in fact, Karalee Shopping Centre, newly enlarged, and the new hub of the Northern side of Ipswich, actually resides inside the boundaries of Chuwar. 04.01.2022 Flashback: Some time after George Colledge purchased the land, a bridge was built across the shallow expanse of the original ford. That bridge was washed away in a ood, and replaced in 1892 with a new bridge. The name of Colledge’s Crossing stayed the same, albeit with the loss of the ‘d’ over time. ... In 1926 a weir and bridge were constructed upstream at the Mt Crosby Pumping Station, giving motorists an alternative crossing when the bridge at College’s Crossing goes under ood, which it is apt to do in wet seasons or when Wivenhoe Dam is released.
