24.01.2022 All Lives Matter, Why, all of a sudden - Now! All lives didn’t matter when the Roman Catholic Church invoked the Doctrine of Discovery which enabled white Chris...tians to treat Indigenous people around the world as non-human and allow them to rape, murder, steal and exploit their lands! All lives didn’t matter when the British were handing out blankets, laced with smallpox, to the original people’s in what is now known as America, to weaken their resistance and enable the rape, murder, stealing and exploitation of their lands! All lives didn’t matter when the British arrived back in what is now known as Australia in 1788 and the original peoples, were also struck down by smallpox in 1789, similar to what happened to the original people’s of America! All lives didn’t matter given the original people’s of Australia, beyond 1788 were forcibly removed from their lands, murdered, raped and systematically massacred! All lives didn’t matter when Australia’s White Australia Policy was introduced! All lives didn’t matter when Aboriginal children were taken away from their parents, kinship, language and culture and told that they were white! All lives didn’t matter when governments deliberately set out to breed the black out of Aboriginal people so they could become useful citizens or slaves in their own land! All lives didn’t matter when Peter Dodd’s McCormick first penned Advanced Australia Fair - to advance a fair skinned white people from the United Kingdom! All lives didn’t matter given it was only in 1967 that the original people’s of Australia, were no longer classified as Flora and Fauna! All lives still don’t matter when our nearest neighbours in Western Papua continue suffer systematic genocide right now while Australia’s political leadership are aware, but turn a blind eye! All lives don’t matter when 431 Aboriginal people die in custody, since the Royal Commission into Black Deaths in Custody, and not one person is convicted within the Australian justice system! All lives don’t matter when women continue to lose their lives to men because of domestic violence! All lives don’t matter when churches continue to conceal abuse against children! And, I could add significantly to this list! All lives matter, all of a sudden, now - to people who have had their heads buried in the sand, not wanting to understand or accept the brutality and truth of their history and not wanting to acknowledge their privilege or change their status quo!
23.01.2022 There is a proposed screening of Stan Grant’s new documentary The Australian Dream at the Strand in Toowoomba on October 17th 2019, but only on the premise that they can sell at least 60 tickets in 12 days! It is $22each. See https://fan-force.com//the-australian-dream-bcc-cinemas-t/ Trailer... From shy country kid to two-time Brownlow medallist and Australian of the Year, Goodes is an inspiration to many. The footy field was where he thrived; the only place where the colour of his skin was irrelevant. Goodes’ world fell apart when he became the target of racial abuse during a game, which spiralled into public backlash against him. He spoke out about racism when Australia was not ready to hear the ugly truth, retiring quietly from AFL heartbroken. Using the stunning athleticism of Goodes at the peak of his powers as well as the game itself as the film’s backdrop, THE AUSTRALIAN DREAM prompts questions about Australia’s relationship with racism and its ability to confront its own past. This compelling, provocative and cinematic film uses interviews from both sides of the debate to ask probing and fundamental questions about what it means to be Australian and what it takes for any individual to stand up for what they truly believe in. Featuring Goodes and all the key players from his story, including Grant, Michael O’Loughlin, Brett Goodes, Natalie Goodes, Tracey Holmes, Nova Peris, Nicky Winmar, Gilbert McAdam, Linda Burney, Paul Roos, John Longmire, Nathan Buckley, Eddie McGuire and Andrew Bolt, THE AUSTRALIAN DREAM is also a deeply personal and comprehensive exploration of Goodes’ own journey which saw him retreat from everyday life only to return determined to rise above the ugliness he had been forced to confront. 23.01.2022 The Battle of One Tree Hill, defending their land by people from many different groups, was celebrated in Toowoomba lst week. Over 200 people were there for a very meaningful and emotional event. Ray Kerkhove and Frank Uhr have written the story in a book and there is a children's version.
21.01.2022 This book, about how Indigenous thinking can save the world, is worth listening to. Here is one idea: "In our traditional systems of law, we remember that everyone is an idiot from time to time. Punishment is harsh and swift, but afterwards, there is no criminal record, no grudge against the transgressor. Perpetrators are only criminals until they are punished, and then they may be respected again and begin to make a positive contribution to the group."
20.01.2022 More from Dhungala: Beautiful music by three women under the trees, celebrating the country and feeling the life of trees - as the sun set across the Murray River and flocks of duck squarked their way home for the night. And a midden where local Yorta Yorta People can contemplate their ancestors' lives here over thousands of years.
19.01.2022 The end of the National Fire Workshop: The Firestick being handed from Yorta Yorta to David Hudson (yes the didge artist) to take to next year's Workshop - in North Qld around Croydon, and being smoked off country!
19.01.2022 Our lovely slow burn at Marvale with Githabul Rangers and lots of people sharing the day. Several local land-holders very interested and respectful of this Indigenous knowledge.
19.01.2022 At the fire workshop, we were shown how to make traditional possum skin cloaks. These cloaks were worn in Victoria but also around Warwick in Queensland. Furry side in when raining - very cosy!
16.01.2022 It has rained! The creek is running. The country is coming to life. Come to our Discussion with Grant and Uncle Mike on Sunday and enjoy a picnic near the flowing creek.
14.01.2022 Discussion Day with Grant Sarra and Mike Williams We would love to see you here
12.01.2022 Firesticks is an Indigenous organisation encouraging the adoption of traditional burning. You can see them on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/firesticksalliance/ or on their website: http://www.firesticks.org.au/ They are trying to raise $1,000,000 to help cultural fire holders as part of a push to have these methods recognised after all the devastating bushfires.
10.01.2022 Grant has been coming to Cicada Woman to facilitate discussions on "Australia Day" each year. We invite you to read this comment of his:
09.01.2022 "Our study found that Indigenous children whose parents promoted a strong sense of cultural identity in early childhood experienced better health and socio-emotional outcomes later in life." Ass. Prof. Dockery, Curtin University
07.01.2022 Learning Australian dances at the National Fire Workshop. Dancing is a way of teaching how to live. Lets do more of it.
06.01.2022 Check out this Cultural Healing Family Workshop by Mibbinah in Warwick on 2, 3 and 4 December. Provided by Goolburri Health
05.01.2022 We had a wonderfully positive time on Sunday sharing who we all are as both Aboriginal people and as others of different heritage, and how we might move forward to live well together. We plan to keep in touch.
04.01.2022 Read this book! It has just been published and is Victor Steffensen's book about Aboriginal fire knowledge - fire to look after country.
02.01.2022 Cultural burning workshop in Tenterfield Thursday 21 Nov with Victor Steffensen. A chance to learn how to look after country ready for next winter ... don't miss this if you live locally
01.01.2022 Another good idea from Yunkaporta "Sand Talk": Don’t try to explain Aboriginal ways so others can understand, try to use Aboriginal knowledges to consider current issues
01.01.2022 Victor yesterday teaching about Aboriginal way of Caring for Country at Jimbour Station, near Dalby. He is also working with several local Aboriginal groups of Rangers to plan training so Aboriginal people can lead the way. Big opportunities coming, and they want your support. (Jimbour Station is a magnificent example of colonialism - wealth based on stolen land, but now they are listening).
