23.01.2022 Many people don’t know that platypus could be in just as much danger as koalas are! If we don’t know, how are we going to know if we’re doing the right thing? Maybe a CFF entry would help raise awareness! Remember: 3 minutes maximum and 8 days to go! Wildlife Queensland is doing some good work with platypus, check out their webpage. https://wildlife.org.au/platypuswatch/ WPSQ Bayside Branch

23.01.2022 Mangroves have been called nature’s all-rounders so that gives us an idea that they are important for a number of reasons. Today is World Mangrove Day an International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem. It aims to raise awareness of the importance of mangrove ecosystems as unique, special and vulnerable" and to promote solutions for their sustainable management, conservation and uses. Some of the short films made by SEQ youth do just this! Take a look a...t "Mangroves" by Tatjana Trotter and Paris Omerod, the inaugural 2011-2012 Cicada Awards winners https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1X4qTtot98; as well as "The Importance of mangroves", a winner for Tamborine State School students in 2015 https://www.youtube.com/watch; and, take heed from Birkdale South State School entrants who want to "Save our Mangroves n Moreton Bay". Accolades to these young film-makers, and also to students from Kimberley College and Browns Plains State High who took part in MangroveWatch on the Logan River earlier this year. You can check out their efforts on this Totally Wild episode https://10play.com.au//episodes//episode-99/tpv200506cyahj It’s World Mangrove Day we can do our part! SEQ's mangroves face considerable threats and a better understanding of their importance is needed. Do you feel a short film coming on? 05.01.2022 Self-isolation and social distancing have become the new norm for many people. But in this short film NOWNESS, a movement for creative excellence in storytelling, presents a compilation of Wes Anderson films showing many of his characters social distancing before it was mainstream. Wes Anderson is a screenwriter, director and producer. His films have distinctive visual and narrative styles and three of them appeared in a 2016 BBC poll of the greatest films since 2000. Do you know his films? Happy Film Friday, and don’t forget - less than 40 days until closing date (38 days precisely) in the 2020 CFF! 03.01.2022 We're in the middle of National Science Week and the theme is "Deep Blue: Innovations for the future of our oceans". The Cicada Film Festival has an Oceans Theme category and films must identify an issue and provide some suggestions on how to fix it. Feel a film coming on? A visit to this exhibition at IndigiScapes Centre may provide you with some inspiration and information! Entries close 7th September, Threatened Species Day. Shrills! WPSQ Bayside Branch Wildlife Queensland

02.01.2022 Laws set up to protect unique species and habitats are ineffective, according to a major review of the national environmental framework. This seems accurate given that almost three-quarters of South East Queensland's koala habitat has been cleared since 1960; numbers have fallen by about 80 per cent in the past 20 years; and the Cabbage Tree Creek wildlife corridor supporting a koala colony is under threat of development. Some of last years CFF winners looked at the plight of... SEQ koalas. You can view the films via the link. Can you add your voice to the shrill?
