22.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE 28 September 2012 Queensland State Government leaves indigenous remains in limbo For the past decade Bob Weatherall, a proud Kamilaroi man and respected repatriation expert has worked tirelessly to have Aboriginal remains in museums all over the world returned to Australia so they can be buried according to custom. ... A long-awaited burial ceremony that was scheduled for tomorrow has now been cancelled due to the Newman Government’s slash and burn approach to indigenous funding in Queensland. The Northern Kamilaroi is one of four indigenous groups who participated in a Queensland government funded repatriation pilot study in south west Queensland that required them to draw up their repatriation plans. Now the government is refusing to fund the implementation of their plans. Today, Aboriginal Elders across Queensland are in mourning, Mr Weatherall said. Premier Newman, his Ministers and Director Generals and their vicious funding cuts have left Kamilaroi peoples unable to proceed with a long-awaited burial ceremony, Today we grieve because the promise to our people and our ancestors has been broken again. The good will that was building through the process of developing this repatriation plan has dissipated. Today was to be a day of great emotion, of joy and solemnity, relief and triumph as a Kamilaroi delegation escorted the remains of their ancestors from the Queensland Museum back to their homelands. The delegation would have passed through the countries of other nations who would greet them and grant them safe passage. Kamilaroi members would join the repatriation party along the journey home to St George where the collective would perform a welcome home ceremony and smoking and homecoming celebration. This was our vision for today. Instead it is another day of great mourning, as it will also be tomorrow. At dawn, our ancestors were to be laid to rest in the land their mother, according to Kamilaroi tradition, and finally be freed to commence their journey to the spirit world. Now, we are left in limbo, Mr Weatherall said. ENDS

20.01.2022 NOTICE TO ALL KAMILAROI RE CANCELLATION OF BURIAL CEREMONY 29/9/12: Yamma, Northern Gomeroi United Families, This letter is to provide you with a brief update of our endeavours to secure the relevant resources to effectively progress Gomeroi repatriation and proposed burial ceremony scheduled for the 29th September 2012. Unfortunately I have to advise the Qld Newman and Gillard governments have so far failed to commit essential resources we urgently require to undertake all r...elevant tasks and plans we have identified to go to ceremony. Due to our inability to secure these vital funding resources from state and federal governments at this moment or in the near future, we have now sought the sponsorship of Industry and Philanthropic organisations. After consultation with the Kamilaroi Tribal Council and others, it has been decided to CANCEL the proposed burial ceremony on 29 September 2012. We hope to organise a meeting in the very near future For ratification of the repatriation plan by the Kamilaroi Tribal Council To seek your consideration and advice on how we proceed to meet our customary obligations to lay our ancestors to rest. To reschedule Wun.ga-li walaaybaa nhama maran/Kamilaroi Repatriation Plan implementation. It is imperative that Gomeroi/Kamilaroi men and women step up and declare their willingness to take on responsibilities for undertaking specific tasks leading up to ceremony. We will endeavour to secure meetings with the relevant Q government departments and premier Newman to acquire his commitment for Gomeroi/Kamilaroi tasks and burial ceremony and for all other First Nations in Queensland. I have attached the latest response to our correspondence from the Premiers Director General for your information and will provide you with updates as information becomes available. Take Care. Regards Bob Weatherall Chair Kamilaroi Land Trust

01.01.2022 Kamilaroi Repatriation of Ancestral Human Remains Wun.ga-li walaaybaa nhama maran (Return home of the ancestors) The Qld Museum holds a number of Kamilaroi ancestral human remains, grave goods and other cultural... properties originating from the Northern Kamilaroi homelands in south west Queensland. In 1990, the Kamilaroi Land Council made a land acquisition application to the Balonne Shire Council which resulted in degazetting of Crown Land on Thuraggi Reserve, which was transferred to the Kamilaroi Land Trust (KLT) for the Kamilaroi people of St George. Now finally, in collaboration with the CICP (Centre for Indigenous Cultural Policy), a draft Kamilaroi Repatriation Plan for Wun.ga-li walaaybaa nhama maran (Return home of the ancestors), has been developed. The CICP and KLT called upon traditional knowledge holders of Kamilaroi sacred burial practices and laws regarding burials, to assist in the construction of the cultural requirements of the Kamilaroi burial ceremony. These cultural teachers met with the Northern Kamilaroi Repatriation Tribal Council and together they have drawn up a draft repatriation plan that will involve an official handover of Kamilaroi ancestral remains from the Qld Museum to Kamilaroi Elders on 27 September. The ancestors will be transported back to country for burial in the Kamilaroi Land Trust burial ground at St George on 29 September. Another handover of ancestral remains from McLeay Museum will be held in St George on Friday 28 September at 3 pm, together with a welcome home ceremony for the ancestors from Qld Museum. A traditional Kamilaroi last rites and burial ceremony will be conducted to lay the ancestors to rest the following morning at sunrise. Kamilaroi burial practice and ceremony training at St George NOW CANCELLED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE Keep posted All Kamilaroi interested in continuing our cultural practice are welcome and encouraged to participate. The training will include the ancient Kamilaroi burial customs, roles and responsibilities such as song, dance, paint-up, preparation of message sticks and ceremonial digging tools and traditional carving of ground and burial trees. Meet at Rowden Park football oval in St George at 9:00 am sharp on Saturday morning Unfortunately, funding is not available to assist with travel or accommodation. ________________________________________ We see the Wun.ga-li walaaybaa nhama maran as our opportunity for a holistic Kamilaroi cultural revitalisation and to pass on these cultural teachings from generation to generation. We welcome the advice and contributions of other Kamilaroi who hold traditional knowledge of Kamilaroi customs, traditions and belief systems. If that is you or someone you know, please message me with contact information and I will contact you. Bob Weatherall Coordinator Northern Kamilaroi Repatriation Tribal Council See more
