25.01.2022 It's a big week for Independence Day celebrations in Latin America. Today is el Día de la Independencia in Mexico, commemorating the start of the Mexican War of Independence against Spain on September 16th 1810. Widely celebrated in the USA, this year's celebrations have gone virtual and parades have been creatively updated to suit restrictions, with a caravan parade held on the 12th in Chicago. Yesterday, September 15, it was Independence Day for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, while on September 18, it will be Chile's Independence Day. ¡Festejamos!

Together these two days are called Las Fiestas Patrias and are by far the most important national holidays in Peru. Apart from official festivities, including a Presidential speech and mass, every plaza is filled with traditional dances, music and food vendors with everything from anticucho, papas rellenas, chicharrón and ceviche. Felices Fiestas Patrias!
