24.01.2022 If a great film is one in which you feel intrigued by plot, enveloped in character, shaken by emotion and surprised how it ends, then the psychological thriller Promising Young Woman (2020) is a great film. That is not to say it is without fault; rather its impact rises above its limitations to deliver a bullseye message much needed by its target audience.... http://cinemusefilms.com//01/20/promising-young-woman-2020/
23.01.2022 Good storytelling too often takes a back seat to acting, sets and cinematography. This is not the case in News of the World (2020). With strong narrative flow and well-calibrated emotional intensity, it is a refreshing old-fashioned western story with insights for the modern world. Weary from years of fighting on the losing side of the US Civil War in 1861-1865, former Captain Jefferson Kidd (Tom Hanks) makes a living as a public news reader.... http://cinemusefilms.com/2021/02/15/news-of-the-world-2020/
23.01.2022 All too often a film attracts attention because of its pedigree ingredients. When a director’s surname is Coppola, or when the rusty icon Bill Murray is involved, expectations run high but also have further to fall. With its potpourri of labels, adventure, comedy and drama, On the Rocks (2020) is another example of a film being much less than the sum of its parts.... http://cinemusefilms.com/2020/12/05/on-the-rocks-2020/
16.01.2022 As a rhetorical meme, the word Nomadland (2020) evokes images of displaced people wandering across unfriendly landscapes. First appearing as a book called Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century (2017), it is no surprise that the film version is about surviving in a post-GFC world under the shattered moral compass and aberrant political climate of Trump’s America. It’s a simple story that meanders from a perfect storm towards a dismal future.... http://cinemusefilms.com/2021/01/28/nomadland-2020/
11.01.2022 All too often a film is more noteworthy for what it is not, rather than for what it is. Contrary to what some might expect, My Salinger Year (2020) is not about the revered and reclusive J. D. Salinger who remains a shadow in the background, nor is it about the lofty world of fine literature. When you peel back the marketing gloss all you find is a coming-of-age chick-flick of limited depth.... http://cinemusefilms.com/2021/02/09/my-salinger-year-2020/
10.01.2022 Despite having top-shelf talent, superb cinematography, and sumptuous settings, the queer period melodrama Ammonite (2020) promises much but delivers little. Its disappointment lies in the way the film’s central figure is diminished with an historically false narrative created as a pretext for yet another tortured lesbian love tale. The story is ‘inspired’ by the real Mary Anning (Kate Winslet) who was a significant pioneer in paleontology during the early 1800s.... http://cinemusefilms.com/2021/02/03/ammonite-2020/
