24.01.2022 We got a bit frustrated last week that media did buggerall to mark the extinction of the Smooth Handfish, the first fish to go extinct in modern times. So we bo...oked a tribute to the species in The Mercury. We called to make sure they accepted tributes to animals - they said they did. But then they rejected it, and gave us a buzz to let us know that they meant 'dogs and cats'. It gave us all of the feelings that a species should go extinct with barely an eyebrow raised. See more

24.01.2022 Media Release The Tasmanian Alliance for Marine Protection (TAMP) believes demands for Tassal to turn over two leases in d’Entrecasteaux Channel to marine rese...rve is merely the first in growing demand for an end to industrial fish farming in unsuitable waters. The whole Channel area from the top of North Bruny to the bottom of South Bruny is simply unsuitable for intensive industrial production of Atlantic salmon, Peter George, co-Chair of TAMP says. The Killora community’s demand that two leases in the northern part of the Channel - Sheppards and Simmonds - be converted to marine reserve makes good sense. The Channel is too shallow and the current too weak to allow thousands of tonnes of fish food and faeces to continue to be released in the water to the detriment all marine life in the area. Ask anyone who has lived on the Channel for a long time and they’ll tell you that native fish life is disappearing or gone. What’s happening in the Channel is also happing at Port Arthur where algal infestation is despoiling some beautiful sites like Long Bay and Stingaree Bay since Tassal upped production there. Tassal recently regenerated leases 16 kilometres up the Huon River from Huon Island where its huge new well-boat, Aqua Spa has been operating in the past couple of weeks only tens of metres offshore. It’s crazy stuff: unsustainable and destructive. Either Tassal hasn’t learned from the awful disaster it helped create in Macquarie Harbour in 2018 when over a million fish died from overstocking and over-use of the harbour - or it doesn’t care. Tassal and its partner in ignoring common sense, sustainable aquaculture, Huon Aquaculture, need to understand a reckoning is coming. Coast communities are starting to realise the jobs created in the industry are simply unsustainable under these conditions. TAMP supports sustainable aquaculture. It can be an important contributor to the food chain but if the Tasmanian industry does not move offshore or, more likely, to on-shore, reticulated aquaculture it will inevitably collapse with the loss of jobs and income to the State. Tassal needs to listen to the Killora community on Bruny Island because those voices are merely the first of many that will be raised across the state. All comments may be attributed to Peter George, co-Chair, TAMP See more

We are refurbishing a road in Lenah Valley using asphalt made from 150,000 discarded plastic bags, 5400 printer cartr...idges and 62,400 glass bottles. Plus 280 tonnes of recycled concrete from the tip is also being used as fill, diverting the construction waste from landfill. Trial today & everywhere very soon See more

15.01.2022 'Australia’s climate has entered a new era of sustained extreme weather events, such as dangerous bushfires and heatwaves, courtesy of rising average temperatures, a report by two government climate science agencies has found. Rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, mostly from fossil fuel burning, has driven more dangerous bushfires, rising sea levels and a rapid rise in the days where temperatures reach extreme levels, the Bureau of Meteorology and the CSIRO said in the latest state of the climate report. What we are seeing now is beyond the realm of what was possible previously, said Dr Jaci Brown, the director of CSIRO’s climate science centre'

08.01.2022 Huge storms riding on top of high tides are currently wreaking havoc along the New South Wales and Queensland coastline. Sadly, these kinds of storms are becomi...ng more intense due to climate change. We need to fight to save our favourite beaches from worsening extreme weather by accelerating towards renewable energy and drastically reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.

05.01.2022 This month lawyers from the EDO are proceeding to fight for Malbena in the Supreme Court. They are arguing that the Tas planning tribunal made an error of law ...in its interpretation of the planning scheme in finding that it could rely on the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife’s Reserve Activity Assessment for the proposal instead of undertaking its own assessment against the WHA management plan. They are also arguing that the Tribunal should not have relied on the Reserve Activity Assessment for the proposed development because it was defective. Stay tuned for updates as they come to light. 05.01.2022 South Australia has become the first state to outlaw single-use plastic products such as straws and cutlery. The Single-use and Other Plastic Products (Waste A...voidance) Bill was passed in parliament today, outlawing products such as straws, cutlery and beverage stirrers. The laws will come into effect early 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. What do you think? : Government of South Australia

04.01.2022 With one of the corner stones of secure circular economies being agriculture, how do we support our farmers to be profitable while regenerating our food and fibre production areas? Here's a series of 3 online sessions "Designing Stable Profits with Regenerative Agriculture" starting next week.

02.01.2022 In August of this year we emailed Sustainable Timbers Tasmania (STT) asking why Mutual Valley forest area CC160B suddenly had a new road through it, and had bee...n moved into logging plans for 2020. We were worried that there would be plans to log this forest in winter and spring, and that STT had not noticed there were signs of myrtle wilt disease in the area. We got no response from STT. Three weeks ago we found locked gates when going out to do a citizen science survey and that logging had started. This despite the Forest Practices Plan clearly stating 'The harvest area has steep slopes and will be logged under dry weather conditions only (as per FPC)' This forest and the river that runs below it is also within the Derby water catchment area. Logging of this forest started in August, winter, and is continuing as the rains continue. 50mm fell in 36 hours from Friday of last week while loggers were still in the forest. A clear breach of the Forest Practices Plan. We have submitted a breach complaint to the Forest Practice Authority, with an urgent request to halt logging and investigate these breaches. It is heartbreaking to get to know the trees and animals in a forest and then have to rake through the debris to record breaches and the destruction of Gondwanic remnant forests. It is important community driven citizen science work that we should not have to do. Help us put the spotlight on these shoddy practices by writing letters to the Examiner and Mercury letters to the editor calling for an end to native forest logging, and an end to taxpayers subsidising the destruction of our towns water sheds, climate stores and biodiversity arks. Our forests are worth more standing!
