11.01.2022 SECTIONS OF BLUE MOUNTAINS REOPENED On the weekend several sections of the Blue Mountains National Park were reopened to the public for the first time sin...ce bushfires closed the area in the days leading up to Christmas 2019. Resident Philip James Gleeson shared this photo taken from the Govetts Leap lookout and wrote about his experience on the Blue Mountains Firewatch Facebook group: I wanted to see how the hanging swamp just to the right of the waterfall had fared. Prior to the fires this was a wall of green where water seeped out of the cliffs giving life to a veritable hanging garden that supported a whole assortment of wildflowers. Among them grew the largest known population of Fletchers Drumsticks (Isopogon fletcheri), a species found nowhere else in the world but the Grose Valley whose entire habitat had potentially been burnt. What greeted me was a sobering sight but not hopeless. Much of the hanging swamp had indeed been burnt but some green remained and in amongst it, the emerald green clumps of Fletchers Drumsticks still clinging to the wall. It will be many months before it will be possible to tell if other populations can regenerate and survive on the drier cliff faces where individual plants were scattered around the valley, but here at least some plants have been spared. 07.01.2022 TOURISTS ENCOURAGED TO RETURN TO BLUE MOUNTAINS "Blue Mountains Tourism (BMT), together with the New South Wales Rural Fire Service and New South Wales National... Parks and Wildlife Services are encouraging tourists to return to the villages and towns of the Blue Mountains. The NSW Rural Fire Service has reported that the Erskine Creek, Linden Creek, Grose Valley and Ruined Castle fires are now contained and that its bush fire operations are now focused on aerial patrol."
