"Contemporary circus detains a strong potential of inquiry about collaborative processes, interdisciplinary approaches, and interactions with the environment. Amid the global pandemic and climatic crisis, the necessity to renegotiate how we interact with the world becomes increasingly imminent." It's great to see circus communities collaborating and creating across artistic disciplines, especially in such times as these. 21.01.2022 Vulcana is looking for stage management assistance for our upcoming show, Rear Vision. This is an opportunity to be involved in a unique outdoor production (for this drive-in circus show), with a large cast, assisting with production elements, such as bump in and bump out, setting up lighting, managing audiences, assisting performers. No experience is necessary. The final rehearsals are evenings of 15, 16 and the public season is 17 - 19 December, with a weather hold day on Sunday 20 in case a show is cancelled due to rain, and if you are available, possibly assistance with the final rehearsal on Sunday 13 December. 20.01.2022 This Saturday at Cinemata Circus - Movie night fundraiser we will witness a piece of Brisbane circus history. When we first decided we wanted to show film of a key historical circus show, ‘The Dark’ kept coming up in conversation. ‘The Dark’ was an early 90’s circus work by Rock and Roll circus, the company that later became CIRCA, and was considered a ground breaking and boundary pushing piece of work. It contained a cast of performers who continued on to be key players in ...the industry and held a reputation for it’s brilliance, even amongst people that had never seen it. The problem was did a copy exist? At first it looked like it didn’t. Copies that had existed but had been destroyed by flood, people that may have it but didn’t. But the interest had been sparked. People knew it was important to hold onto our cities circus history, and jumped on board to find it. And then a VHS copy was found thanks to Kitty Carra. So it was sent to be digitised, while we all waited to see if it was useable. Last week we set up the projector and watched as this piece of history filled the screen. There it was, the show in full. Join us this Saturday to take a trip through a piece of the history of Brisbane’s circus past.

In this 4 week short course you will be taken through the basics of stilt walking and into character development to create your own stilt walking persona. Working with Larissa Deak, you will get an opportunity to expand both your stilt skills, and play with characters with an option to work towards a performance outcome for those who are interested. An all levels course, this is open to anyone who has completed at least one term of circus classes with Vulcana, or equivalent elsewhere

11.01.2022 Vulcanistas! Would you like to take part in a Circus Exchange project, that sees Vulcana circus women exchange skills with Australian Muslim women? Vulcana invites you to participate in Circus Exchange, a workshop project over 9 weeks, that brings together women from Australian Muslim communities across Brisbane and women from Vulcana to share circus skills and build knowledge across cultures. On Saturday afternoons from 6 Feb 27 March, 2-4pm for 8 weeks, these free worksh...ops allow you to support women to get excited, and learn what they can achieve through circus. Led by two Vulcana circus trainers, Phoebe Manning and Mayu Muto, this will be an opportunity learn from others, and apply your circus skills at whatever level you are at, to inspire others. On Saturday, 10 April, there will be a showing and Circus Exchange Finale for family and friends from 2-4pm Childcare will be available for all workshop events. 08.01.2022 "In 1984, a group of women in New York gathered outside the Museum of Modern Art as part of a protest. A group show, An International Survey of Recent Painting and Sculpture, was showing 165 artists, 152 male artists exhibited alongside just 13 women. Outraged, they attended the protest, bringing placards and chanting outside the museum. But a handful of women within the larger crowd learned something. We realized it didn’t work, nobody cared about what we were saying, arti...st Käthe Kollwitz told the Guardian (each member of the Guerrilla Girls takes the name of a dead female artist as a pseudonym). We figured there had to be a better way of getting people’s attention, to prove to people that the art world is not the meritocracy that everyone thought it was. These women and dozens more would later fuse forces to become a legendary DIY art group, making a career out of the art of protest."
