19.01.2022 Keep Australia Beautiful Week is held late August each year to raise awareness about the simple things we can all do in our daily lives to reduce our impact on the environment and encourage action. Did you know that it takes 450 years fir a plastic bottle to degrade? When you come to circus make sure you bring your own water bottle to fill up. This helps us reduce single use plastic. We also do not allow balloons in the Freo Big Top. If youre celebrating with us, a reusable... banner or bunting are great alternatives! Head to Keep Australia Beautiful for tips on how you can help to prevent the spread.
19.01.2022 Contemporary Acro Dance was one of our most popular classes during lockdown and we're bringing it back for term 4. Through this specialist dance program, Simon Wood will explore the links between contemporary dance movement and the softer acrobatic tumbling. The class will have a set warm up focusing on alignment and strength, followed by handstand technique and different acrobatic and contemporary dance movements and pathways. This class uses techniques and ideas from acrobatics, contemporary dance, ballet, pilates and yoga. See what wonderful things you can create when two worlds collide.
18.01.2022 Earlier this week we promised to share the work of some deadly First Nations artists with you. Read on to learn about some of the First Nations projects, programs and people bringing the magic on country and overseas. 3/5 Spotlight on DJUKI MALA You may have been lucky enough to see this talented mob when they came to perform on Whadjuk Noongar country at the end of October. They've been making their way up the coast on tour so if you're in Roebourne, Whyalla, Port Pirie or R...enmark, check their website for ticket availability. The Broome shows on Nov 20 and 21 are sold out. It was a viral video of the group dancing to "Zorba the Greek" uploaded to Youtube in 2007 that catapulted Djuki Mala into the spotlight and their unique dance style and performance quality which has kept them there. Since 2007 they have created a number of shows combining their re-interpretations of popular culture and dance with narrative and drama. The work reflects the juxtapositions they see in contemporary Yolngu culture, and offers a rare and insightful view into Aboriginal Australia. The strong roots of clowning in Yolngu culture shines through in Djuki Mala's flare for comedy. Always exuberant and blending their contemporary experience as young people with their traditional culture, their identity as Yolngu people is always in the foreground. Djuki Mala fuse traditional and contemporary forms of dance. Dressed in traditional costumes and ochre, with Gara (spears) & Galpu (spear thrower) they create work that is a marvel of timing, comedy and clowning, warming both the heart and soul. Behind the humour is startling movement skill and discipline, drawn from traditional culture and dance. They've taken their shows all over the world to great acclaim but for the Djuki Mala team the cultures of the Yolngu, Kalkadoon, Anmatjerre, Arrente and Walpiri people are where their hearts and homes lie. https://www.djukimala.com/ Image by Colin Murty #NAIDOC2020 #alwayswasalwayswillbe
