11.01.2022 Mix it up Seated Posture Most people will proclaim to be ‘tight’ and will often to be told to sit in good posture by their treating practitioner. The idea is not sit in one posture rather it should be to vary the amount of positions you use. Siting for hours is a fatiguing exercise and doing so in one posture is like any exercise - at some point your muscles will fail against gravity placing strain on the whole musculoskeletal system. Sitting is an endurance exercise! Perf...ect posture doesn’t exist this is important when considering any prolonged sitting you may do which includes a large part of the population. We are often encouraged to sit in certain positions in an effort to alleviate aches, pains and sore areas of the body. These often include, the upper and lower neck, the mid back and can include the lower back and even the gluteal muscles. Most people will proclaim to be ‘tight’ and will often to be told to sit in good posture by their treating practitioner. The remedy is not to find the perfect posture or device to put you in a certain position, the remedy is to vary the positions you sit in and not be there for hours. It’s okay to sit in obscure and unconventional ways for short periods. For those working for long hours with a computer mix it up and change the load placed on the body. Think of it this way changing positions is like using different muscles in a circuit class; while one set is being used the other is recovering. Don’t strive for a posture, use many postures and move around when you can.

06.01.2022 Performing a median nerve tension test

04.01.2022 Alternate median nerve tension test.

04.01.2022 Activity, shin pain and Remedial Massage With the warmer weather on its way and the increase in daylight hours we often see activities and sports resuming. Spring is often a time when people dust off the joggers and start running to increase fitness, lose weight and to generally feel good about themself. Running is a simple activity but doesn’t come without its risks. Most of these risks can be avoided. Running and jogging can be a cause of soft tissue injuries if the body do...esn’t have appropriate recovery times. A common injury to those that increase their running load and speeds too quickly is medial shin pain often this is termed ‘shin splints’, although it is not the correct term it is well known too many. We are not fully aware of all the factors involved in this injury however there are some common themes to those that struggle with this condition such as: Increase in speed or distance too quickly Previous injury history Poor form this can occur due to musculoskeletal imbalances (think about your hips and pelvis) Surface often softer (yes softer!) surfaces can be a problem think running on the beach digging your toes into the sand! If you have a niggling pain in the shin(s) and you have recently started running, have you allowed enough recovery between bouts of exercise? If not you may benefit from a series of remedial massage treatments; pop into the CIT Fit and Well Student Massage Clinic and book in with one of the diploma of remedial massage students who will be able to assess your condition and under the guidance of industry qualified instructors. They can design a treatment plan that is appropriate for you. This might just get you back on the road a little bit quicker and pain free! Term 4 Clinic resumes Tuesday 13th October 2020
