Understanding millennial old religions and their sociopolitical history and context can be confusing to an outsider. In Understanding Islam we also explore the difference between Sunni, Shia and othe...r sects within Islam to allow students to understand some of the contemporary debates around these issues. Students will develop an understanding of the debates around Islam and democracy, Jihad and terrorism, women’s rights, Islamic finance, and leadership structures and organisations in the Muslim communities. 17.01.2022 Islamic Pedagogy refers to the educational values, concepts, and perspectives rooted in the Islamic tradition that inspire and inform renewed thinking within Islamic schools and educational settings. Pedagogy in this sense is a human science, a philosophy of education that addresses the big 'why' questions around the purpose of education and schooling thereby informing the way we teach (i.e. instruction) - but isn’t simply the art of instruction. If you work in an Islamic School or teach in one with a significant number of Muslim students, studying Islamic Pedagogy will not just provide you with a more nuanced understanding of Islam, but it will change the way you teach. 14.01.2022 Classrooms are becoming increasingly diverse. And teachers are willing to engage in the diversity of our students. But when diversity includes religion, we hesitate. Why is that? Because religion is too sensitive and teachers aren't equipped? Or maybe because religion doesn't belong in public schools? The Australian Professional Standard for students expects that we as educators 'demonstrate teaching strategies that are responsive to the learning strengths and needs of studen...ts from diverse linguistic, cultural, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds' At CITE, we explore what that looks like in our classrooms. Aren't home cultures, which for some include religious values, learning assets for our classrooms? At Unisa we believe in equity in education. When it comes to the religious identities of Australian students, equity means imbuing classroom teaching with an understanding of the values and beliefs of our students, not just pushing them aside. CITE provides a professional learning opportunity that promises to push your thinking and extend your practice. To learn more, visit www.unisa.edu.au/cite
