24.01.2022 MEDIA RELEASE: Royal Commission postpones visit to Tasmania The Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability has po...stponed community forums in northern Tasmania due to concerns about the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak. The Commission was scheduled to visit Burnie and Launceston next week for a series of community forums and information sessions. The Chair Ronald Sackville AO QC said the Royal Commission has been closely monitoring the situation, and has made the decision in the best interest of the health and safety of the community generally and of people with disability in particular. ‘We apologise for any inconvenience, however we consider this to be a necessary and appropriate step, given the number of confirmed cases in Australia continues to rise. ‘We want to assure all those who have registered for the forums in Tasmania, and the wider community, that there will be many other opportunities for people to tell the Royal Commission about their experiences of violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation. ‘People can make a submission in any way they choose, by phone, in writing or by making an audio or video recording. ‘People can also apply for a private session with a Commissioner. ‘Details about submissions and private sessions and about a range of supports to help people engage with the Royal Commission are available on our website. ‘At this stage, the Royal Commission’s public hearing on education in Brisbane will go ahead, but again, we will closely follow the advice of medical experts. ‘Health and safety are the paramount considerations. ‘If we need to make any changes, we will provide details on our website and social media channels via Facebook and Twitter,’ said the Chair. 12.01.2022 In this video we interview 6 people with diverse communication needs about how they communicate and interact with the world. This video is important because it ...lets us know how we can better connect with people who have diverse communication needs. It also lets us know some things we shouldn't do- Things that many people do without realising it is offensive. Most importantly it gives a key message that diverse communication should not stop connection. You can download a transcript of this video on our website home page at: https://purpleorange.org.au/ (captions are embedded in video)

10.01.2022 In response to the Covid-19 outbreak and measures to slow down the spread of the virus, we have made the decision to continue our operations remotely. Staff are working from home effective immediately until further notice and can still be reached via mobile phone on: 0409 182 999 or email: [email protected]. ... Please be reassured that we are still available for support and advice, therefore please do not hesitate to make contact. In these uncertain times it is even more important to maintain contact with people in our community who are isolated and potentially vulnerable. This may need to occur via phone, or through other technological means during this crisis. If Advocates are worried about how this may occur, or would like some suggestions please contact staff for assistance. Additionally if you know anyone who is suitable and willing to become a Citizen Advocate and connect with a person with a disability who is isolated during this time via phone or other technological means please ask them to contact Nicole ASAP. Best wishes to everyone during this difficult time. Please remember to look out for each other.

01.01.2022 At Citizen Advocacy Launceston the health, safety and well-being of our staff, advocates, proteges, board members, visitors, family and friends is very important to us. As such we are closely monitoring the Coronavirus situation and advice from the World Health Organisation and Australia's Chief Medical Officer. While our office remains open we do ask that all visitors to the office take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of others by reducing the likelihood of trans...mission. These are listed below. If you are showing any signs of illness please refrain from visiting. We are just a phone call away. What we know so far: Coronavirus is an infectious disease that is most likely spread from person-to person via: - direct or close contact with others who are infectious. - touching objects or surfaces contaminated from a cough or sneeze from a person with a confirmed infection then touching your mouth or face. The symptoms of Coronavirus are similar to other colds and flu and include: -Fever -Sore throat -Fatigue -Difficulty breathing -Cough In some cases people recover easily and experience only mild symptoms. However, in more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even death. People at most risk of more serious or life-threatening infection include: -The elderly - People with pre-existing medical conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, lung disease, cancer or diabetes. - People living in group residential settings. - People with compromised immune systems. - People in detention facilities. - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people (as they often have higher rates of chronic illness). - Very young children and babies. Ways to reduce infection risk: -Please wash your hands frequently for at least 20 seconds or use alcohol based sanitiser before contact with others. -Try not to touch your mouth, eyes or face. -If you have a cough and/or need to sneeze please cover with your elbow or a tissue, then dispose of the tissue immediately in a rubbish bin. -Clean and disinfect touched surfaces regularly. -REMEMBER: If unwell, stay at home and away from others. Take care and stay safe, Nicole, Ellen and Bethany.
