25.01.2022 Getting ready for another sunset cruise with some Charlie bravos in the background
25.01.2022 Capt. Carrington of the SS Palmerston recalls this encounter in 1884 whilst surveying Liverpool River. The natives on the Liverpool were very friendly, and app...arently glad to see us ; but very much frightened, or else very shy, as we did not see much of them. We arrived at the head waters of the Tomkinson late one night. At daylight next morning there was a dense fog ; but having taken the bearing of the low hills (Lindsay) on arrival, we walked across the plains to strike them. Suddenly, at about 8 a.m., the fog lifted, and we found we were in the neighborhood of a large number of natives, who all-men, women, and children-came running towards us in the most friendly manner. They appeared very pleased to see us ; and one old man wished to present me with a little girl, probably about six years old, and seemed much disappointed at my non-acceptance. The girl-bright, large-eyed, and intelligent-seemed perfectly willing ; and I am informed it is considered a great honour in the tribes to have a child presented to you. This old man carried a spear with two prongs about 18in. long, made of telegraph or else stout fencing wire. It was a most formidable weapon, and had doubtless been obtained from a great distance. After making the men a present of pipes and tobacco, and distributing a few blankets to the ladies, who certainly needed them, we parted very good friends. See more

08.01.2022 A piece of history hanging up on the wall at the historical Grove Hill Hotel / Museum... amongst many other relics from the Territory Gold Rush Days. The propri...eter, Stan told me the story behind the "Shovel" In the early 1900's the miners received a 20% (a few shillings) pay increase except for the Chinese workers. As there were no Unions and the Chinese didn't want to make trouble, they decided to cut 20% off their shovels in protest. Next payday, they also got the pay increase plus new shovels. The Grove Hill Hotel is still closed to tourist as far as I know, but it is well worth a visit when it opens again, an amazing part of our history. See more

06.01.2022 On this day, 9th September 1839, Darwin Harbour, where the city of Darwin now stands, is located by Europeans and named. The city of Darwin, capital of the... Northern Territory, Australia is located on Darwin Harbour. The land was originally occupied by the Larrakia people of the Top End who had already been trading with the Macassans for many years before European settlers came. The first Europeans to the area were Dutch traders who visited Australia's northern coastline in the 1600s, charting the first European maps of the region. On 9 September 1839, Captain of the HMS Beagle, John Lort Stokes, sailed into Darwin Harbour and named "Port Darwin" after British naturalist Charles Darwin, who had been on the Beagle on a previous journey. The harbour was initially not settled, as Port Essington, 300 kilometres north, was regarded as a more strategic site for settlement and a better prospect to offset any intended French colonisation of Australia's far north coast. Like other settlements along the northern coastline which preceded it, Port Essington floundered for some years, eventually being abandoned. After John McDouall Stuart made the first successful crossing of Australia in 1862, this opened the way for the construction of the Overland Telegraph Line from Adelaide to the north coast, opening Australia to direct communication with the rest of the world. Thus, the settlement of Darwin was more successful than previous incursions into settling the north coast as it was to serve a very important link in this communication. Darwin’s first white settlers arrived on 5 February 1869. The town was initially named Palmerston after the Prime Minister of Britain, Lord Palmerston, Henry Temple. However, all shipping to the area was consigned to "Port Darwin". In 1911, when South Australia handed control of its northern half to the Commonwealth of Australia, the name Darwin was officially adopted. Pictured: Engraving of Port Darwin 1873. RTPA.
