23.01.2022 Lion Garry was awarded the 20 YEARS OF SERVICE TAB at our AGM this week! Pictured with President Lion Jenny presenting the award below. And also presented, in absentia, was the 25 Years of Service Tab to Lion Kevin Wills! Kevin is doing well with the help of his family but not able to attend all our meetings. We all wish him good health and offer him our congratulations.

20.01.2022 Christmas cakes and puddings have arrived and many have already been distributed to our regular outlets! Thank you to those Lions involved in this magnificent task, a task that kicked Christmas off before the seasonal jingles even hit the stores! Not sure if that is worthy bragging about :)

17.01.2022 We had a very interesting guest speaker this week talk about holiday home swapping at our meeting. He prefers to remain anonymous. http://www.homelink.org hooks up like-minded people to swap homes around the globe. Like-minded people commonly swap cars, bicycles and homes to experience life and immerse in communities in different worlds and cultures. Typically neighbours or cousins hand over the keys to the properties and act as emergency contacts, but nothing bad has ever ...happened to our guest speaker in the many years he has been swapping. Sometimes he and his partner link up several swaps for one trip and they might stay in a hotel for a few days in between, but typically he returns home and finds he has spent little or no more than he would have had he stayed at home. The usual arrangement is that people have a visitors book/manual which explains the white goods, TV remotes, driving advice, tourist hints and tips for the area and sometimes a welcome basket and a fridge filled with local with goodies. Before leaving people always make sure the properties are locked up and returned to the same pristine condition of course as the swappers can review their experiences. Insurance companies love the fact he does it and not leave home and car unattended while on holidays. Sometimes they go visiting family on the mainland and allow swappers to look after their house. For pet owners swapping may include looking after a dog or cat, but that is always spelled out in the home swap details. #TheGreatPause we are experiencing with Covid has not stopped people from using the site, with our guest-speaker swapping with other Tasmanians, but of course looking forward to other Australian swaps when the borders open up again. It was a great presentation and inspired us all to travel again and investigate #homeswap opportunities.

13.01.2022 The City of Devonport Lions Club had a recent dinner meeting at the 'Zest Cafe and Bakehouse' run by Peter Langford and his young family. Peter enthusiastically took over the cafe, formerly known as the Wagyu Pie Company 4 years ago. Peter, his wife and young daughter worked hard to make the business a success and despite several setbacks along the way, including Covid-19, are surviving in the hard hit catering industry. The biggest problem right now is having to turn away customers because of social distancing requirements which limits seating capacity to only a third of what it could be. We really enjoyed our meal here and wish Peter and family all the best!

11.01.2022 Today Tasmania opened its state borders again! We remain vigilant and the annual (and already sold out) Festival of Magic will be brought to us via Zoom! Select Lions will be (virtually) ushering at the shows via their own screens. We sincerely thank all the businesses in the community that have sponsored tickets this year... www.worldfestivalofmagic.com.au

04.01.2022 City of Devonport Lions Club could no longer meet at our regular Gateway Hotel as it has been made an official quarantine hotel and stopped serving the public. So we have been meeting at the new Prem's Seafood restaurant. So far so good and we have had two successful meetings there and are attracting new potential members. If you have ever thought of doing something constructive for the community that we live in why not consider joining us!

01.01.2022 City of Devonport Lion's Club President Jenny Rimmer had the honour to attend a Civic Reception at the Paranaple Centre last night to meet the Governor General of Australia - His Excellence - David Hurley and his wife Linda. Earlier in the day the entourage visited the Teddy Sheean Memorial at Latrobe. His Excellence spoke on the difficult year and thanked local volunteer groups. ... Linda Hurley has a beautiful voice and encouraged us to sing "You Are My Sunshine," which created lots of laughter. The visitors commented on the magnificent view from the building .
