24.01.2022 Mid back pain has probably been the most common thing weve treated in the last 4 months. Commonly it occurs between the shoulder blades and gets worse as the day goes on. Nothing seemed to cause it but now nothing will cure its low grade constant ache! Now, from a physio perspective it always comes down to posture for this area of the body. Sitting posture, standing posture, the posture when you move your arms, bend over or do exercise! So we will assess all of these things globally but also zone in, like Matt is doing here on what happens at the individual rib level with sitting posture! Is one rib moving less than its friends above or below? Is one sitting offset to the left? All of these little details will allow us to build a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs and injury.

23.01.2022 The hip is a complex joint with many structures that supports it. So, it is important for your physio to assess the hip thoroughly so see if your pain is coming from the hip itself, or referred from the pelvis, low back or surrounding soft tissues.

23.01.2022 Are you finding that you're trying to self release the back of your neck when you have a headache? Well over 90% of headaches have a neck contribution, so you're somewhat in the right ball park! Headaches (including; tension / migraine type headaches) come from the miscommunication between the first three vertebras in the neck. Here at City Physio, we assess the specific vertebral level that is causing you headaches, when there is a will, there is a way!

23.01.2022 TRICEPS TENDONITIS is one of the least common elbow injuries but we see it a lot in tennis players who change up their top spin! Tendonitis is basically an overload of a tendon, and in this case it is the tendon that attaches into the back of the elbow. This muscle extends the arm. So, if you change up your serve or your swing just a bit, the loads around the shoulder and elbow can change dramatically. Do this enough and something will become overloaded!... In this case this player was trying to increase his top spin, causing him to turn the racquet in such a way that the triceps were required to control the rate of elbow flexion as the racquet came across the body. This, plus adding in an extra 90 minute lesson every week was enough to cause a neat little triceps tendonitis quite quickly which sidelined him for a couple of weeks while we settle the pain and dysfunction!

22.01.2022 Guess these bones?!

21.01.2022 Rolled your ankle during your soccer game on the weekend? Come visit Claudia! Treating the lower limb is one of her favourite body parts. She will get you back up on your feet and return to play ASAP!

20.01.2022 The C2 vertebrae - the second cervical vertebrae in your neck. Also part of the atlas/axis duo. C2 (Axis) is a unique vertebrae with an upward facing long bony process called the dens, which slots into C1 (axis) forming the Atlanto- axial joint, creating pivoting motions at the joint. This bad boy can be the bane of headache types. 90% of headaches involve the neck, so if C1/C2 are not working as a team, this can then have a domino effect of headache / dizziness / pressure symptoms.

20.01.2022 Poor hand posture can contribute to increasing load to the wrist. One injury that could occur in this region is De Quervains tenosynovitis - pain develops as a result of irritation and thickening of the thumb tendons. The more friction and compression that occurs at the tendon, the more pain! Fix you posture, unload the wrist and if that doesn't help - come visit us here at City Physio!

18.01.2022 Did you know over 90% of all headache types have a neck contribution? That includes migraine and tension type headaches! So, if you treat the neck accurately- the headaches will dissipate in frequency, intensity and duration. Pretty cool, hey!

16.01.2022 Brachial plexus - a network of nerves that originate from the spinal cord in the neck, travel down the neck and into the arm pit and supplies the upper limb. An injury to the brachial plexus could cause compression or irritation to the nerves, sending signals such as tingling or burning sensations. If you are getting these symptoms, don't shake it out, it's a thing that needs to be assessed and managed immediately!!

16.01.2022 Does your posture need a little kick in the right direction this week?

15.01.2022 Introducing C1 - the first vertebrae in your neck, also known as the Atlas Fun fact: C1 /Atlas is named from the mythical Greek God who carried the world on his shoulders, similar to our bodies, the atlas joint supports the globe of the head! The atypical joint is a ring like structure and acts as a washer between the spine and the head. Have you got a headache stemming from the base of your skull and refers to your forehead, above the eye brows - blame C1!

13.01.2022 Dry needling can be a super effective tool to kick some of the tight spots which are caused by postural stressors. If you've tried it and love it then we're your place! If you've heard about it and want to try it we can make that happen! If you're needle- phobic we have plenty of other tools and techniques in our arsenal to get you moving!

13.01.2022 New rotator cuff blog up on the website!

12.01.2022 Three adjustments you can make right now to your desk set up to avoid desk-related wrist pain! 1. Get that wrist FLAT! Make sure the hand isn't kicked up because your mouse is too high, or your hand too low because youre using a laptop or working at a desk that isnt the right height 2. Consider your CHAIR. Slouching from the head and shoulders has a trickle down effect on your arms... fix the problem from the top... 3. Use a MOUSE. Using a central trackpad on a laptop can cause the wrist and hand to sit at unusual angles for prolonged periods. Grab a wireless mouse (or wired, you do you) and whack it in your hand off to one side. This can help keep the hand, elbow and shoulder all lined up avoiding awkward and repeated wrist deviations.

12.01.2022 If you own or have seen a bumpy knee like this and wondered what it is, look no further! This interesting lump at the front of the knee comes from a condition know as Osgood Schlatter's disease. It affects children experiencing growth spurts and is more common in children who play sports where they are regularly running and jumping. Children experiencing persistent pain in this area may need to reduce their physical activity until pain and swelling subside. Even after all the pain has subside, the bump is there to stay into adulthood.

11.01.2022 We're all exhausted at this time of year, but don't fall in to the habit of your rolling your shoulders forward, because your head will not be far behind! "Posture is too hard" is something we often hear at City Physio, but not necessarily, think tall and light and make sure your body is stacked to avoid feelings of stiffness, tightness and restriction!

10.01.2022 Bruising- as impressive as it can look its relationship with function isn't always consistent. Things are often getting more colourful as function as symptoms are improving. Nevertheless, important to identify why your limb is 50 shades of blue so be sure to pop in and see us.

09.01.2022 Did you know we now wear masks for all treatment? Weve been wearing them for a couple of months now and the elastic ear-ache is real! But these are not just ANY run of the mill masks, these ones are from the National Medical Stockpile! So for that we thank our local PHN for mobilising the stocks when we couldnt source our own medical grade PPE! Providing safe and sustainable healthcare is our mission, being an infamous hotspot is not! So, as always- wash your hands, dont touch your face and stay safe! And we are here if you need us! #cityphysiosydney

09.01.2022 Scapular Dyskinesis is a fancy term for "your shoulders dont move how they're supposed to". Most commonly we see shoulder hitching in people with tight neck and shoulders. We see the shoulder blades rolling forward or winging in people with anterior shoulder pain. We see asymmetrical movement, weakness, clunky movement and a whole host of other strange things happening when you really break the movement down! In essence, the shoulder blades should glide evenly and symmetrically. So if you're having issues with ongoing stiffness, tightness and pain... maybe it's time to look from the BACK!

09.01.2022 C1- where the skull meets the spine. The positioning and movement of this bone can be influenced by postures and behaviours which sets the tone for the rest of the spine. Always aim to be tall, float the skull or elongate the back of the neck to optimise joint function between this little guy and its neighbours, i.e. the skull and C2.

08.01.2022 This bad boy scar is a result of a total knee replacement - Here at City Physio, we treat pre and post op orthopedic surgeries Now that elective surgeries are back in action - its important to have a management plan for your rehab. Our physios will guide you on a rehabilitation program to ensure we get you back on your feet and work towards your end goal!

08.01.2022 ANKLE SPRAINS are easly one of our most common lower limb issues at City Physio. Sprains are graded into 3 categories... and in most cases, our in clinic testing is just as accurate as the $300 MRI your friend keeps telling you you need! Grade 1 being a low grade sprain (roughly less than 10% of fibres) Grade 2 being a middle to high grade sprain (something like 11% to 99% of fibres being disrupted... Grade 3 is ruptured. Gone. Cya later ligaments The rehab for each grade, even what end of the grade you're sitting in will change youre rehab quite significantly! AKA someone who has a Grade 1 ankle and wants to play this weekend might very well be able to with some strapping! Where as if you're somewhere in the north end of Grade 2 with a 50-80% tear there will likely be a period off the field, some good rehab to get everyone else sharing the load and then a progressive return-to-sport program! Grading is important!

08.01.2022 Does your knee fall in on a squat or when you run? Do you have pain descending stairs? These are all signs of something called Patellofemoral Pain! Basically it means that your kneecap isnt tracking well causing friction and inflammation on its undersurface. BUT in most cases, your knee is the innocent victim of a lazy BUTT! With 35 muscles in the pelvis, your butt muscles play an important stabilising role for the legs, particularly in single leg activities like stairs and running! So, how are your buns of steel going in this pandemic? Are they flat as a pancake from 12+ hours of sitting, are they neglected in your home workouts as youve switched out all strength training in place of cardio?

06.01.2022 Did you know that your elbow range of motion can tell you a lot of things about your risk of injury for things like tennis elbow, wrist overuse injuries and even shoulder pain! This elbow was a bit sore but healing well after surgery. What the patient didnt realise was the extent of restriction in the rotations of his elbow- supination and pronation. This, if left untreated will be unlikely to cause pain today, next month or even in the next few months but it will act as a drip feed into the system causing slow but progressive overload. Our motto is always- fix things ONCE, fix them properly and this is absolutely a case for that!

06.01.2022 Dry Needling is primarily focused on the reduction of pain through the release of myofascial trigger points in muscle to restore function. A trigger point is an area of muscle which is highly contracted due to muscle overuse, inflammation or weakness. These single use sterile fine needles are placed on or around an area of dysfunction and then work to release any knots to settle pain, restore range and function of the affected muscles

05.01.2022 Getting headaches? and not just from the silly season happy hour / month... Well - Did you know 90% of all headache types have a neck contribution. This includes migraines and tension type headaches. If this is you, pop in and we will get you sorted for 2021 - new body new you!

04.01.2022 Headache coming from your neck? One of the most common things we treat at City Physio! So much so weve written a blog on it! Head to www.cityphysio.net.au and head to Blogs

03.01.2022 JELLY FISH TAPING is a neat little technique to provide some light compression over an area of swelling, bruising and pain! While the evidence is out on K-tape, this is an in-clinic fave of ours for a big, fat ankle! #sprainedankle #anklesprain #ankletape #ankletaping #mlcphysio #martinplacephysio #sydneycbdphysio

03.01.2022 I'd love someone to look at me like Jordan looks at knees and hips. Jordan take greats pride in his attention to detail, so if you have a knee or hip injury you're in good hands.

02.01.2022 There are 4 Rotator Cuff muscles in the shoulder: the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis. The job of these muscles is to provide a coordinated effort to stabilise the shoulder and keep the "ball" in the "socket". Busy little bees, these Rotator Cuff muscles! That's why they are some of the more commonly injured structures in the shoulder. Wear and tear, poor posture, sudden falls or overhead movements are just some of the ways you can damage these mu...scles causing dysfunction and pain. BUT! Luckily for you, most of these injuries are managed conservatively- aka not surgery! Yes, surgery can have it's place but if diagnosed early and treated pro actively small tears, tendinopathies and shoulder dysfunction can be restored with Physio alone!

02.01.2022 Appointments available with Claudia this week! Book online!

02.01.2022 Here at City Physio, we thrive on accuracy and specificity. In order for the best treatment plan, we always start off with detailed history taking and a thorough physical assessment. The more we understand your injury the better the results of your treatment.

02.01.2022 OS GOOD SCHLATTERS is a tibial tuberosity apophysitis, which is the fancy medical name for inflammation of the bone at the top of the tibia (shin bone), where the tendon from the patella (kneecap) attaches. It is an overuse knee injury rather than a traumatic injury and occurs almost exclusively in children. During growth phases, this area of bone is not as good at withstanding high tensile forces so when presented with strong, repetitive muscle contractions, micro-fractures can occur. This can also occur as the femur grows rapidly and the muscle is unable to keep up with the rapidly lengthening femur. This can cause irregular bone growth at the shin bone creating the bump most sufferers are familiar with!

02.01.2022 DRY NEEDLES vs ACUPUNCTURE What is the difference? The main difference between Dry Needling and acupuncture is the theory behind why the techniques work.... Acupuncture is based on an Eastern diagnosis of an imbalance, a blockage of energy flow, an excess of heat etc. The acupuncture points are pre determined and the ones used are based on the diagnosis with an aim to restoring the flow of energy (Qi) through meridians to restore balance in the body. This can mean needles to treat an ailment can be placed anywhere in the body to restore this balance. Dry Needling is primarily focused on the reduction of pain through the release of myofascial trigger points in muscle to restore function. This means that the needles are placed on or around an area of dysfunction. The needles then work to release any trigger points or knots, settle pain and help to restore range and function of the affected muscles

01.01.2022 Pain in the neck/shoulder area and constantly tight upper traps? Introducing the first rib! Yep, not only is there is a rib here that sits above your collar bone, but it can cause all sorts of pain when sitting too high or not moving well. It acts as an anchor for the neck and a strut for the ribcage so problems here can cause issues from neck to thorax.
