24.01.2022 Are we in the West more likely to succumb to soft cultural power or hard political power? There have been huge debates over Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World and George Orwell’s 1984. Huxley said we would be seduced and neutered as a society by comfort and ease. Orwell said we would be disempowered by totalitarianism. Which one has proven right?

19.01.2022 What is church? Why are there so many different denominations? Why can't we all just get along? What teachings should be considered essential for a church to be orthodox? Why does it matter? Join David Robertson and Stephen McAlpine as they speak with Melvin Tinker at the Dining Table.

18.01.2022 What a great night we had at this year's Smith Lecture last night! Professor Peter Gill challenged us to value and protect truth, not to walk away from such a rich inheritance. Big thanks to all of you who joined us. You can still watch the lecture by registering here: https://citybibleforum.org/ci/sydney/activity/smith-lecture

16.01.2022 Every week we read somewhere that the public is outraged over something or someone, as if the 'public' were one monolithic chunk of people who all think the same way. But is that true? Is there any general to the general public, or do we have lots of mini, specific publics instead? Western societies are increasingly fractured into tribes with no real notion of the common good any longer. It often seems that the loudest voice or an activist group can give the impression that their cause is everybody’s cause. This is especially true in identity issues in our culture. Who gets to decide who the general public is? And who gets to speak on their behalf?

16.01.2022 ANNOUNCING THE 2020 SMITH LECTURE | The Science of Trust | 7PM 18 November 2020 For the first time, our annual Smith Lecture will be live-streamed to a national audience! Gather your friends and colleagues over a meal and to hear from Professor Peter Gill, President of the World Association of Theoretical and Computational Chemists. Professor Gill will explain why the scientific enterprise, and indeed the fabric of our society, depends on the liberating power of truth.

10.01.2022 ‘You do you.’ Is there a better motto for life and how we love others? ‘You do you’ sounds good. It encourages people to be authentic, to be true to who they are. Surely, a world full of conflict and division would benefit from more people adopting ‘you do you’ as a guiding principle in their dealings with others? But what would life look like if everyone did adopt such a ‘you do you’ attitude? What if ‘you do you’ is not as loving as we first think and actually leads to more... conflict and division? Is there a better way to live and to love? Join our final series at Bible Shots for 2020 as Stephen McAlpine argues that ‘you do you’ is not a loving attitude when it comes to issues like freedom, sex, pleasure and spirituality. Steve will also help us consider that a better way to live and to love is found in the pages of the Bible and the message of Jesus.

04.01.2022 Does truth matter? Is a world where your truth, my truth, and scientific truth are each valued equally such a terrible thing? Join us for the 2020 Smith Lecture as Professor Peter Gill explains why the scientific enterprise and indeed the fabric of our society depends on the liberating power of truth.
