25.01.2022 BETEL LEAF is an evergreen perennial creeper to 90 cm. It has shiny heart-shaped leaves with small white flower spikes. It prefers a rich, well-drained soil with partial shade. It likes to be kept moist but does not tolerate waterlogging. Frost will damage the leaves but not kill the plant once it is well established. It makes a good groundcover under trees in subtropical and tropical areas. The spicy leaves are popular in south east Asian cooking, being used raw and cooked.... To eat raw in a salad or use as a wrapping the young tender leaves are best. In Thailand, these wraps are a favourite snack, 'mieng kum', using an assortment of fillings, like peanuts, shrimps, shallots with lime and raw ginger. Soaking the leaves in cold water with a little sugar for 2 hours before use subtly alters the flavour. As the leaves are very attractive, they are often used as a base to line platters, with foods arranged on top. The white flower spikes develop into a small fruit that can be eaten. Betel leaf has many traditional medicinal uses and we have some in the nursery for you. Come and get some today, open until 12:30 See more

21.01.2022 WA Samphire (aka. sea asparagus, swamp grass, glasswort, pickleweed, sea beans) is a delicious salty treat thats high in vitamin A and a good source of calcium and iron. Samphire is a protected native salt-tolerant succulent that plays a vital role in our coastal ecosystem. The young, green shoots are crisp and crunchy in texture, similar to asparagus, giving a fresh, sea-salt burst of flavour. Enjoy these raw, sautéed or quickly blanched and tossed with olive oil and lemon.... Samphire is considered best for use in Summer when the succulent leaves are pale green and aromatic. Though the leaves turn pink in winter, any green remnants may still be blanched and eaten. Serve with seafood; in salads, pesto or salsa; or use as a garnish. Harvesting the tender new shoots will offer the best flavour without compromising plant growth. This WA native requires less moisture than many other samphire species, and will continue growing with little fuss. However, a deep, occasional watering will improve the quality of new growth. WA Samphire is adapted to a range of conditions, but does best in full sun or part shade, planted in sandy, free-draining soil. New shoots are fleshy and green in colour, and grow upright as the plant sprawls outwards. Plant grows to 50cm in both height and width when grown in the ground, but may be kept small in pots with regular harvesting. Will provide shelter for small birds and lizards if planted in dense numbers. Get yours today !!

16.01.2022 Jasmine sambac / flowers have been used to flavour tea for many centuries by the Chinese. Jasmine tea is most commonly consumed with or after meals as a digestive aid. Some people like to drink it after rich or fatty meals to help cleanse the blood. Others use it to cleanse freshen their breath after eating strong tasting foods, but it is a nice all round tea. The flowers are also edible and have a sweet taste. Jasmine sambac, grows from 2-3 meters high and can spread a simil...ar distance, depending on local conditions. There are several different cultivars, with the Grand Duke of Tuscany being among the most popular. It spreads by sending out angular shoots that can be trimmed to create a shrub-like appearance. In areas subject to frost it may need to regroup and send up new shoots each year. If this is the case, the spread and height will be restricted and it will be a smaller plant. The white flowers will fade to a pinkish colour as they age. As a tropical plant, jasmine sambac does prefer moist, fertile soils, but does not like to be water logged. The best aspect is full sun, but part shade produces good results and can offer some protection from drying out in the hot summers. Some people use multiple plants to produce rambling hedges in larger gardens. If possible, plant it where you can appreciate the fragrance as you go about your day. It does well in pots that are well watered and mulched, so growing a plant in your outdoor entertaining area might be an option.
