The first hotel on this site was the Newmarket Inn, licensed in 1847 and named after the livestock market and slaughterhouse that operated opposite until the 1920s. ‘The butcher’, a South Australian beer measure, may have come into use at this hotel. However like many private hospitals, these buildings started life as houses. 12.01.2022 The 'Get Well Soon' Teddy Bear has officially taken up residence in the Adelaide Town Hall as part of the Treasure of Pageants Past exhibition. This mini-float was designed by Maddy Nyp (aged 5-8) for the 2015 Christmas Pageant as part of the annual children’s 'Design a Mini Float Competition’. Maddy used her prize winnings to purchase and donate as many teddy bears as she could to children at the Women's and Children's Hospital. In the 19th century, most residents in the south-west portion of Adelaide lived in small single-storey cottages like this at 20 Little Sturt Street. These places lined side streets established during successive subdivisions by property developers. The cottage received a funding allocation of $13,747 for re-roofing, verandah repairs, paint removal to façade, salt dam...p repairs, and repointing (see video).
