24.01.2022 Due to current COVID-19 restrictions Council has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Christmas Carols in Hazelwood Park, scheduled for Sunday 6 December. The Christmas Carols are a much loved yearly event for friends and families from across the City. Due to its popularity and historically high attendance rates, Council would not be able to ensure that COVID-19 restrictions can be obeyed without a significant change in how the event is managed.... Hosting this event under current social distancing restrictions can only be achieved with a significant cost burden on our ratepayers. Read the full cancellation announcement at www.burnside.sa.gov.au

23.01.2022 #WindbackWednesday This photograph was taken circa 1953 from Burnside Council looking towards the intersection of Portrush and Greenhill Roads. Nathaniel Knox (1797-1880) named Portrush Road after his hometown Portrush, in Northern Ireland. Greenhill Road opened circa 1849. The name describes how the road leads to a green hill. The roundabout was completed in early 1953 as a solution to heavy traffic.... Can you help us identify the vehicles pictured? 20.01.2022 #WindbackWednesday Glen Osmond became the birth-place of Australia’s mining history when two Cornish miners discovered silver-lead ore at Mt Osmond in 1841. Three mines were quickly established in the area: Wheal Gawler (1841), Glen Osmond Mines (1842) and Wheal Watkins (1843). Robert Watkins purchased the land for Wheal Watkins in 1842. Over its ten years of intermittent operation between 1843 and 1916, Wheal Watkins yielded approximately 1500 tons of ore. Thanks to Mayo...r Monceaux and Meredith Ide from the Burnside Historical Society, South Australia for providing us with a brief history of the mine. 20.01.2022 #WindbackWednesday REMEMBRANCE DAY EDITION Ten thousand miles from here their bones are laid; But yet their spirits live with us and shine. This stone records their sacrifice divine And proves to all their glory shall not fade. No! Shall not fade. Each year as time goes on some tender hand shall deck this stone with flowers, in memory of these noble men of ours in memory of their duty nobly done. Ode to the Soldiers’ Memorial at Magill, November 1920. On 14 November 1...920, Brigadier General Leane unveiled the Magill Soldiers’ Memorial. The Last Post played as the Brigadier uncovered the white marble, revealing the names of 33 local soldiers’ who made the supreme sacrifice. 16.01.2022 THE GREAT DOGGY POO BAG HEIST: To help dog owners dispose of their dog waste responsibly, Council has introduced compostable dog waste bags into parks (the new bags are green, the old ones were black). Recently, Council has become aware that a small number of people are taking excessive amounts of these new bags. Someone has even opened the containers in parks to steal whole rolls of bags! This means that the majority of dog walkers, who want to do the right thing, may no...t have bags available when they need them. In these cases, they may leave their dog’s poo on the ground... This affects everyone, not just dog owners. Who wants to walk in a park littered with dog poo? If these bags are being taken to use in the kitchen caddies it is unnecessary. Each residence is entitled to 150 FREE bags (two rolls of 75) per financial year. Your free rolls of compostable bags for the financial year are available for collection from the City of Burnside Civic Centre. Please do the right thing and keep our beautiful parks and reserves dog poo free by only taking the number of bags you need for dog waste in the parks. 16.01.2022 SUICIDE PREVENTION BILL: Suicide is the leading cause of death for South Australians aged 15 to 44, and in 2019 there was a significant increase in suicide related deaths Australia wide. Suicide is the third leading cause of premature death and has the third highest rate of years of life lost for all conditions. The aim of the proposed Suicide Prevention Bill 2020 is to: - deliver a sustained whole of community and government focus on suicide prevention to reduce the rate of ...suicide in South Australia; and - better monitor outcomes and develop policies and programs that further reduce incidence. The purpose of the Bill is to have a legislative mechanism that aims to reduce the incidence of deaths by suicide and suicide attempts in this State. Under the proposed Bill: A Suicide Prevention Council will be established to oversee suicide prevention and postvention (activities and programs to support people bereaved by suicide) and develop a State Suicide Prevention Plan. Requiring certain agencies to have suicide prevention plans which respond to not only their employees but also their consumers. Establishing the capacity to declare certain means or methods of suicide as a controlled lethal means. Establishing a suicide register to provide more timely information that will assist in a targeted approach to suicide prevention initiatives. You are invited to provide feedback on the draft Bill. You can provide a written submission or complete the short community survey which is available at www.yoursay.sa.gov.au. There will also be two public webinar consultations with interested stakeholders. Details are available on the YourSAy website. The issue of suicide is complex, rarely resulting from a single cause. Understanding the problems helps us understand the solution. The consultation closes COB Friday 12 February 2021.

15.01.2022 #WindbackWednesday The Lockwood Store was the centre of village life in Burnside. In 1859, Joseph Lockwood built the shop and a two-room house on the corner of High Street and Lockwood Road. From 1863, Lockwood operated a post office from the store and acted as an agent for the Registrar of Birth, Death and Marriages. 05.01.2022 #WindbackWednesday Do you remember this Adelaide landmark? ‘Bolton’s Corner’ was a motor workshop and service station on the corner of Greenhill and Fullarton Roads built by George Bolton Snr. George Bolton was Mayor of Burnside Council from 1952 to 1954, then again from 1962 to 1967.... Bolton entered the motor business in 1924 and a year later built Bolton’s Corner in Dulwich. It was the first drive-through petrol station in Australia! In 1939, the station was remodelled in art-deco design, and then in 1970, it was converted into a motorcycle showroom. Bolton passed away in 1977 and his son took over the business, which eventually moved to Keswick. In 2012, the business merged with Bill’s Motorcycles.
