14.01.2022 In the lead-up to the International Women’s Day Walk & Celebrations this Saturday here’s another local female trailblazer you should know! Sally Gearin became the first female member of the Bar in the Northern Territory. She developed a vibrant practice and remained there for 20 years until her retirement in 2010. Having won more than 90% of her cases at trial, this certainly justified the faith of those colleagues who supported her early in her career. As well as developi...ng her practice, Sally was involved in important community and advocacy organisations. She was a founder of Dawn House, Darwin's first Women's Refuge, a founder of the NT Women Lawyers Association and a founder of the Australian Women Lawyers Association. She was also a founding editor of the Northern Territory Law Reports and President of the Northern Territory Chapter of the International Commission of Jurists. In this latter role, she assisted with the establishment of the first Legal Aid office in Dili, Timor Leste, and was an observer at the International War Crimes Tribunals held there in during the United Nations administered transition to that country's independence in May 2002. Pro bono work has always been an important part of Sally’s practice. The motivation has always been quite simple... Sally says "I developed my passion for justice mostly by seeing injustice and powerlessness and wanting to do something about it." Motivated by a desire and passion for the role of women in her profession, Sally represents the strength and determination necessary to be successful as a woman barrister and trailblazer. The International Women’s Day Walk & Celebrations Meet us this Saturday 8:30am in the Civic Centre Courtyard https://www.facebook.com/events/725586461650637

10.01.2022 Dear Ratepayer I read your text to NT News today about Darwin First and the aldermen with great interest. Yes we put Darwin First and that means the whole of Da...rwin from Berrimah to the edge of the waterfront. And that is proven by the fact that in the past few years we have spent a lot of money and put a lot of effort in the "burbs". As a matter of fact last year $ 2M were spent in beutifying the 4 wards in Darwin and that came after consultation with the local aldermen. We planted trees in the parks (10550 trees as a matter of fact) in the roads (60000 bushes and flowering plants), built basketball courts (Tiwi, Nightcliff etc), shopping centre landscape upgrades (Wagaman was the first), dog park in Alawa, lights at the ovals in the suburbs, the $25 M Casuarina pool upgrade, the Green Army cleaning all suburbs and so on. More of the same will come this financial year. I am sorry you somehow were not aware of this. I hope now you are better informed and should you have a special project you want and will benefit your ward please talk to your local alderman or directly to me and will make it happen. Many thanks and please talk to us. Regards Kon
