23.01.2022 Sunday Sessions! The book of two ways, by Jodi Picoult - reviewed by Laurel I didn’t enjoy this as much as previous works by this author. Punctuated by a large volume of Egyptology information, the story revolves around a woman that is involved in a plane crash which makes her rethink her life choices. Torn between the life that she has (which isn’t necessarily going particularly well her marriage is rocky) and the life (and boyfriend) she left behind in Egypt. ... Being a Death Doula she helps people at the end of their lives and this also brings up a crisis of conscience. Unusually in a book of Jodi’s style the protagonist comes across as quite selfish. Without spoiling the story, the ending l felt was not true to Jodi’s normal plot twists. 20.01.2022 Sunday Sessions! The Strangers We Know , by Pip Drysdale - reviewed by Laurel In this climate of ‘swipe left/swipe right’ style dating Charlie feels secure in her marriage to Oliver until one day she sees a picture of Oliver on a dating app while glancing over her friends shoulder. He doesn’t act any different and their relationship seems as close as ever but the image keeps nagging at Charlie, along with Oliver’s insistence of not sharing anything personal on social... media. Why is he being so secretive? Is it because of his crazy ex? Or something more? An easy read that keeps you turning pages long into the night. The twist at the end you may not see coming I would rate it 8/10. Available to borrow from City of Gosnells Library Service as a book & e-book here: https://bit.ly/330JnM9 #SundaySessions #cityofgosnellslibraryservices #bookreviews #library #staffreviews #PipDrysdale #dating #socialmedia #marriage

18.01.2022 Sunday Sessions! The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep, by H.G. Parry - reviewed by Sharon Charley Sutherland is a professor of literature and a former child prodigy, and conceals a magical ability he cant quite control: he can bring characters from books into the real world. His older brother, Rob, strives for a perfectly normal life, which is thoroughly disrupted when Charley returns from years of studying at Cambridge to a job at the local university in their hometown of... Wellington, New Zealand. Suddenly he is subjected to phone calls in the middle of the night to help Charley wrestle characters back into books. When more literary characters keep appearing, it is clear that Charley is not the only summoner, and when talk begins of a "new world" coming, its apparent that their own real world is under threat. This book is peppered with characters drawn from novels you will instantly recognise, and some you may not. There are five Mr. Darcys, which makes it worth reading for that reason alone! It is a cracking, rollicking, magical, very enjoyable read, and a book-lovers delight! 11.01.2022 Sunday Sessions! One Of Us Is Next, by Karen M. McManus - reviewed by Donna Back to Bayview High for a game of Truth or Dare . picking up where we left off with One Of Us Is Lying, and with new main players. A new app has been created that has the whole school playing Truth or Dare. Some enjoy it and they opt for the dare. Some hate it, and when they choose to ignore the warning, an awful truth about them is revealed. All of them have secrets that they need to hide and... many of them get hurt from the raw truth. But who started the game and is blackmailing all the students? What does he want to achieve? Even if you havent read One of Us is Lying, if you love young adult mysteries, I highly recommend it. 09.01.2022 Sunday Sessions! The resilience project: finding happiness through gratitude, empathy and mindfulness, by Hugh van Cuylenburg - reviewed by Ashlee an essential for anyone who would like to look further into how happiness can be acquired through simple and lifechanging techniques. This is a non-fiction read with a self-help philosophy. It was unlike other self-help books I have read as it involved real stories from van Cuylenburg's life. These stories were sometimes har...rowing enough to make me cry and sometimes so wonderful I could not wipe a giant smile off my face. All were portrayed through van Cuylenburg's lovely storytelling ability and crucial to how he learnt his life lessons that are represented in this book. This was an easy read that encouraged deep thinking and changing your attitude to engage in life with more happiness and love. I think everyone could benefit from that. 03.01.2022 Sunday Sessions! Tabletop game: OrganATTACK Verdict: 2.5/5 ... OrganATTACK! is an easy game to jump straight into, great for casual gamers, newbies or as a filler game. The card illustrations are adorable and there are some funny little comments and speech bubbles. Plus, its educational, we definitely learnt a few things about organs and what illnesses can afflict them tonsil stones are a thing. We also learnt that some of us need reading glasses some of the text is small so have your specs handy for this one. Its not particularly strategic but if you take it for what it is, which is a bit of fun, youll enjoy. I would recommend borrowing another game along with this if youre looking at a family games night. OBJECTIVE: To remove all of your opponents organs before they remove all of yours (standard Wednesday night stuff, really). 2-6 players Ages: 10+ Duration of play: 15 minutes (a little longer the first few times) Description: Each player displays their group of randomly dealt organ cards (heart, lungs, gall bladder, etc.) and players take turns to use their ATTACK! cards to place afflictions on the other players organs generally, you need two afflictions to remove an organ but there are special ATTACK! cards and afflictions that remove an organ instantly (apparently love removes the brain, who knew?). There are also other attack cards that you can play to block or cure afflictions, so things can get tricky. It gets harder as organs get removed and your ATTACK! options are reduced. There is an Expansion Pack in the box, this is for when you have six players or to change things up with 2-5 players. The next Kenwick Games Night is on Wednesday 2 September, 6pm- 7.45pm. In the meantime, you can borrow up to 2 games from Kenwicks new Tabletop Games collection.
