25.01.2022 MINDS DO MATTER EXHIBITION NOW OPEN: Launceston's annual exhibition celebrating the relationship between art and mental health is now on at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, Inveresk. Minds do Matter is an exhibition produced by RANT arts and QVMAG, designed to shine a spotlight on mental health in Tasmania. Coinciding with Mental Health Week, the exhibition features works in a range of mediums by Tasmanian artists, inspired by the theme 'balance'.... Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten said the exhibition celebrated the therapeutic and reflective benefits of art and aimed to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness. "We know art can be a powerful tool in the healing and recovery process and can help to kick-start conversations," Mayor van Zetten said. "Minds do Matter is more than an art exhibition. It is a mechanism for providing new insights and understandings about mental health, as well as a creative outlet for some extremely talented Tasmanians." Tracy Puklowski, General Manager of Creative Arts and Culture for the City of Launceston, said she looks forward to exploring the raw, honest and thought-provoking art to be featured as part of this exhibition. "Minds Do Matter is one of the most colourful, vibrant and energetic annual exhibitions QVMAG is involved with and it's one I personally love to see going up on the walls each year," Ms Puklowski said. "As an annual exhibition, it has gained a real reputation for showcasing some of the State's most dynamic, creative and thought-provoking emerging artists. "With many of the works available for sale, it is also a great way to support those artists to continue to develop their careers. Minds do Matter will be on show at QVMAG Inveresk until November 2, 2020. 22.01.2022 Tasmanian artists are contributing to a new public art project on Launceston's streets, inspired by the late Australian botanical illustrator Margaret Stones. A group of local artists were invited to study the extensive collection of Stones' work held at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, and to use their interpretations of her work to decorate traffic control boxes across Launceston. Each interpretation is unique, with results varying from realistic works through to ...colourful abstractions. As part of stage one of the project earlier this year, 20 boxes were painted at a warehouse and later installed along Wellington, Margaret and Bathurst streets. Stage two is now underway with some boxes being decorated in situ by artists, while others are wrapped in prefabricated artworks designed by local high school students. Dubbed 'Electric Botany', the trail of boxes will ultimately stretch from the CBD to Mowbray, along Invermay Road and as far as the West Tamar Highway and Prospect. City of Launceston General Manager of Creative Arts & Cultural Services Tracy Puklowski said Electric Botany was breathing new life into part of the QVMAG collection. "Margaret Stones is widely recognised as one of Australia's preeminent botany illustrators of the 20th Century, and QVMAG is fortunate to boast an impressive selection her work," Ms Puklowski said. "One of the wonderful things about this art project is that it is highlighting Margaret Stones' legacy to new audiences. Her works aren't simply being filed away on a shelf; they are actively being used to inspire new generations of artists, to impart knowledge and skills, and to splash new colour onto what would otherwise be some pretty drab infrastructure across Launceston." Follow the Electric Botany trail using the map available at www.qvmag.tas.gov.au/ElectricBotany and the Launceston Visitor Information Centre.

08.01.2022 Doing Business During COVID-19 Survey: University of Tasmania business researcher Dr Louise Grimmer is conducting a research project into the impacts of COVID-19 on the Tasmanians business sector - specifically retail, hospitality and the service sector. Tasmanian business owners and managers are invited to participate in the study by completing an anonymous online survey.... The survey consists of 20 questions and will take about 10 to 15 minutes to complete. At the end of the survey, participants will have the option to enter a draw for the chance to win one of two $250 pre-paid gift cards. Dr Grimmer is interested in hearing from those owners and managers about how COVID-19 had affected their business operations, and the types of assistance they believe will be important for the future of their business. The findings from the study will be used to prepare a report for government outlining the challenges facing the business sector in Tasmania (based on this empirical research) and recommending business recovery and support options. A summary of the findings will also be available for each participant to access. The survey can be accessed here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/doingbusinesscovid19 Last year, Dr Grimmer authored a study for the City of Launceston, Shopping In The City, which identified factors that traders in the CBD, shoppers and stakeholders consider to be important for encouraging - or alternatively, discouraging - shopping in the Launceston CBD.

07.01.2022 In the wake of recent media reporting about the management of Carr Villa Memorial Park, we wanted to take this opportunity to outline the facts. We recently posted some notices in the Claygrove, Kooyong and Rose Garden ash placement areas of Carr Villa Memorial Park reminding people of the safety issues caused by breakable items like glass and porcelain, when it comes to maintaining the park. Subsequent media reporting caused confusion and upset for many people with family me...mbers interred at this important community facility. Carr Villa Memorial Park is separated into different zones, including a lawn cemetery, ash placement gardens, a monument cemetery, and memorial walls. Different areas of Carr Villa have different interment options, with different standards. These are discussed in detail with families when they are deciding on a place of interment for a departed loved one. Families often choose areas of Carr Villa to inter loved ones specifically because these standards are in place, and that is why we issue reminders about breakable items from time to time so that everyone's needs are respected. In areas like the ash placement gardens, for example, we provide free multiple-use recyclable plastic vases, because breakable items like glass jars, bottles and porcelain vases can hinder maintenance works, including mowing and brush-cutting. This can present a safety hazard for staff and visitors. Given it's now Spring, vegetation is growing, and we expect visitation to increase over the warmer months, we recently posted a reminder notice in the Claygrove, Kooyong and Rose Garden ash placement areas. This was a reminder that breakable items like jars, bottles and ornaments can pose a hazard to visitors and staff. It applies to those specific ash placement gardens not graves in other parts of the park. Along with mitigating safety hazards, we also want to ensure we meet the expectations of visitors that the gardens are uncluttered and well maintained, and that standards are adhered to. We find we have excellent cooperation and compliance when these notices are posted, and we rarely have to approach families to discuss specific issues. The team we have at Carr Villa are very conscious of the importance of this public space to families and the community and will always seek to deal with these kinds of issues in an open, sensitive and respectful manner.

06.01.2022 Over the next six weeks the City of Launceston will be undertaking maintenance works on the Alexandra Suspension Bridge in Launceston's Cataract Gorge. The original Alexandra Suspension Bridge was opened in 1904. It was designed by Charles St. John David, an engineer who drew up plans for Carr Villa Memorial Park, the Duck Reach Power Station and many other Launceston buildings. According to research by Marion Sargent of the Launceston Historical Society, Tasmania, Charles S...t. John David had an interesting past: https://www.helenkegiecollection.org/documen/biog-18-01.pdf After being washed away in the 1929 floods, the bridge was rebuilt and has become a popular addition to the Cataract Gorge. Over coming weeks, the Council will strip and repaint the bridge's two towers, as well as the structure's anchor bolts. The work is being undertaken now to take advantage of warmer temperatures for painting, ahead of the busy summer period. With the First Basin swimming pool flooded this week by recent heavy rainfall, the Council expects the opening of the pool will not occur until late November or early December.

03.01.2022 RELBIA’S FUTURE: The City of Launceston is seeking feedback from Relbia residents about the future of their suburb. The Council is undertaking a strategic review of Relbia to understand how future residential growth can be balanced against its existing unique qualities and character. Community consultation opens this week on our Your Voice Your Launceston website and closes February 12, 2021.... Relbia residents will also receive hard copy surveys in coming days. Launceston Mayor Albert van Zetten said the consultation was aimed at understanding what Relbia residents valued about their suburb, and their thoughts on its priorities for the future. "We already know from past consultation that Relbia residents love the area's rural setting, its proximity to nature, its wildlife, and its scenic character," Mayor van Zetten said. "And we also know while most residents are not supportive of broad-scale residential subdivisions in the future, that they do expect there will be some level of residential growth how we manage that is what this process is seeking to understand. "This is an opportunity for Relbia residents to have a direct say on the strategic priorities for their suburb, and I encourage them to make their voice heard." 01.01.2022 ASHLEIGH AVENUE UPDATE: Roadworks in Ashleigh Ave, West Launceston, have been underway for several weeks. While undertaking preparations to reseal the road this week, it was determined that further stabilisation work was required before the final asphalt was laid, to prevent further disruptions to residents and road users due to future asphalt failures. This work will be undertaken between 9am and 3pm to allow school bus routes to service the area. During construction hours, the road will remain closed with residential access permitted. We expect the work to be completed on December 4 and we apologise for any inconvenience caused to motorists during this period.
