25.01.2022 Sunrise at Roy Marten Dog Park is this week's #PAEplaces. Finished in 2017, this huge open space has a large dog park, a small dog park, a reserve, a hard court, plus a huge adventure playground for children and not-quite-so-young children alike!

24.01.2022 This week we drop in to Major Peter Badcoe Reserve in Clearview for #PAEplaces. On 7 April 1967, during the Vietnam War, he wrote his last letter to his wife. That day he learned that the 1st Division Reaction Company was in difficulty near the hamlet of An Thuan. Knowing that the company would be denied air support unless advisers were present, he drove there by jeep with a United States Army sergeant. On arrival, Badcoe took charge and rallied the men in the face of withering fire. Crawling ahead, he made several attempts to silence a machine-gun with grenades. His sergeant at one stage pulled him out of the line of fire. Rising again to throw another grenade, Badcoe was shot and killed.

23.01.2022 Recently we've commissioned artists to create pieces we are calling "Tiny Gems". These are exciting small things that bring new life, and possibly a new meaning, to tiny spaces across PAE. Keep an eye out as we unveil snippets of more than 50 new pieces of Tiny Gems art when they are installed! Until then, here is a sneak peek at what some of the artists are working on. We don't want to give it all away by showing everything on here though, we want you to find them yourselves! We'll tell you more soon and let you know where to go looking! Artists - Alan Tulloch, Bridgette Minuzzo, Christine Pyman, Elizabeth Close, Jay Hann, Karena Colquhoun, Kasper Schmidt Mumm, Kurt Bosecke, Laura Wills and Mandi Glynn-Jones

22.01.2022 This year, Christmas and New Year’s Day are on a Friday. 22.01.2022 This week we meet Cr John Croci from Parks Ward to discover what makes his local area special for him. "There are many wonderful open spaces in the Parks Ward, and each helps reflect the history of the area and diversity of our community. Richard Day Reserve on York Terrace reflects our colonial past. Tao Dan on Sutherland Road has elements that recognise the strong Vietnamese community. I have been advocating for the care of our parks for the fifty years I have lived here. The variety and accessibility of the open spaces here in an urban area is one of the best things about life in the Parks."

21.01.2022 Here's James enjoying our Liberty Swing! Today is the International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) a United Nations observed day that is celebrated all around the world. It aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and celebrate their achievements and contributions. Almost 1 in 5 Australian live with disability- this equates to just over 23,000 people in PAE. At the 2016 census, almost 7% of our residents reported needing... help in their day to day lives due to disability. And 12.6% of people aged over 15 were providing assistance to a person with a disability, long term illness or due to old age. When it comes to access and inclusion, our vision is that the City of PAE supports people with a disability to participate in all aspects of community life. We’ve worked with the community to create our Inclusive Communities’ plan, which details how we intend to provide an integrated, whole of Council approach to strength inclusion and access for all. The plan is available online, including in an Easy English version, or we can arrange to have one sent out. We're gathering feedback about the plan as we go on, so please get in touch if you would like to have your say about how we could make PAE more accessible and inclusive. If you'd like to learn more about what we are doing and read our Plan, please visit www.cityofpae.sa.gov.au/commu/services/access-and-inclusion

21.01.2022 Snakes can be scary so we've lightened the mood by drawing arms on them! Serious post though As we are coming into the summer months we've had a number of enquiries regarding snakes. If you do come across a snake, keep children and pets well clear, and do not touch it. Almost all snake bites occur when people try to handle, kill or harm a snake. If you spot a snake on a council reserve or public area please call us immediately on 8405 6600 and we will arrange for a Communit...y Safety Officer and a snake catcher to attend. If possible please keep your eye on the snake until somebody arrives. If a snake is on private property you will need to contact a DEWNR licensed snake removal service. For assistance finding a licensed snake catcher contact DEWNR Fauna Permit Unit on 8124 4972.

20.01.2022 As a result of a COVID breakout, some Greater Brisbane area suburbs will be locked down from 6pm to night to 6pm on Monday 11 January. With ongoing lockdowns, border closures and changing travel restrictions it is a timely reminder that it is important for everyone to be vigilant, and continue with social distancing, hand sanitising, QR code check-ins, face masks and testing should you experience any cough or flu like symptoms. We will continue to provide updates to help keep our community safe. Further information can be found at SA Health

20.01.2022 Our City of PAE trainee program has grown in 2021 as we welcome 13 new young people who will be joining us for the year to undertake this intensive on-the-job education. For the first time ever, we have trainees across all areas of the organisation, from outside in the field doing horticulture and construction, to office-based project management, customer service, and admin. This program provides ongoing training, development and networking opportunities for young people to g...reatly enhance their skills before they enter the job market. It is also a fantastic opportunity for our staff to gain experience in mentoring and coaching through their involvement in the program. We are committed to building a city with opportunities for young people as they are our future. We are working with Maxima Group Australia and our PAE Youth Team, to provide better opportunities for young people to help address youth unemployment, made worse by the pandemic.

20.01.2022 Unfortunately, we weren't able to hold Christmas Parade this year, due to you know what. Instead, we gave the man in red a call and he agreed to trade in his sleigh for a classic Chevy and go for a tour of the City of PAE with the Mayor this week. They made more than a few stops at our libraries and community centres along the way. Did you see them driving around? We'd love to see your photos! Thank you to our volunteer Derek Duke Communications Folio for capturing all of the smiling faces in this video.

18.01.2022 This week, meet your new Deputy Mayor Cr Paul Russell - Klemzig Ward. Councillors vote for the Deputy Mayor each year, and at our November meeting Cr Russell was elected into the role for 2021. Here's what he loves about where he lives. "Klemzig ward has the Torrens River as it’s the southern-most boundary. The linear park developments and cycling and walking tracks make this an ideal place to live and raise a family. There’s a wanderer's spirit in my family’s heritage. So, to have lived in one spot in Klemzig for more than 30 years now is some sort of testament to the hold this place has through all that it offers. In that, our family are no orphans and even though our streets are changing through urban infill, there still remains in those that live in our area a strong sense of belonging to this place"

18.01.2022 Many South Australians have been affected by suicide and the consequences can be devastating, complex and long-lasting for families and communities. Suicide is the leading cause of death for South Australians aged 15 to 44, is the third leading cause of premature death, and has the third highest rate of years of life lost for all conditions. The draft Suicide Prevention Bill proposes to establish measures to reduce suicide in South Australia. It will promote a whole of commu...nity focus on suicide, underpinned by sustained engagement with the community, government and non-government agencies, and services and community organisations such as Suicide Prevention Networks, which the City of PAE is a part of. The purpose of the Bill is to have a legislative mechanism that aims to reduce the incidence of deaths by suicide and suicide attempts in this State. It proposes to do so through a number of measures, including: Establishing a Suicide Prevention Council to oversee suicide prevention and postvention (activities and programs to support people bereaved by suicide) and prepare a State Suicide Prevention Plan. Requiring certain agencies to have suicide prevention plans which respond to not only their employees but also their consumers. Establishing the capacity to declare certain means or methods of suicide as a controlled lethal means. Establishing a suicide register to provide more timely information that will assist in a targeted approach to suicide prevention initiatives. You are invited to provide feedback on the draft Bill. You can provide a written submission or complete the short community survey which is available at www.yoursay.sa.gov.au. There will also be two public webinar consultations with interested stakeholders. Details are available on the YourSAy website. The consultation closes COB Friday 12 February 2021.

16.01.2022 Laura Carrington is a local waste warrior and the brains behind Refuse Reduce Reuse Recycle in Adelaide www.facebook.com/groups/789511804493926 Here is a photo of her the last time she put her blue bin out... on 24 April 2020! She shared some top tips to help you send less landfill this October during #LessToLandfillOctober. 1. I'm learning to maximise the use of the council's yellow recycling and green food and garden organics bins. I also compost most of my food scraps.... 2. I'm taking soft plastics like chip packets and lolly bags to Redcycle bins at Coles and Woolies to be recycled. 3. I'm using reusable shopping bags, fruit and veg bags, bread bags, jars and containers so most of my food is bought packaging-free. I shop at small local bakeries, fruit and veg stores and bulk wholefood stores where produce is packaging-free. I make a lot of my own snacks and drinks. 4. I use reusable nappies and wipes for Mr 1! 5. I use 'Refuse Reduce Reuse Recycle in Adelaide' and the Adelaide Waste Collective FB group to ask questions and learn from others. 6. I use the local Buy Nothing Project FB group to rehome toys, clothes, homewares, garden equipment, some of which is not suitable to donate to op shops but too good for hard rubbish! 7. I refuse receipts! They can't be recycled or composted.

16.01.2022 Time is running our to submit your ideas for Colour Our City, with submissions closing this weekend. Just head to the page, drop a marker on the map and tell us your idea https://haveyoursay.cityofpae.sa.gov.au/colour-our-city Tell us about the spaces and places in your neighbourhood that could do with a dash of colour. We will use that information to shape a series of creative placemaking projects involving communities and artists which could be anything from verge gardening through to small scale art interventions. For this week's #PAEplaces, here is a recent mural from local artist Ella Simpson who we commissioned to bring some colour to Company Square Reserve.

The City of PAE have been working throughout the process and will be providing a formal submission which will be presented at the December council meeting. Visit www.plan.sa.gov.au

15.01.2022 Learn about how we look after, maintain and repair over two and a quarter billion dollars’ worth of infrastructure for our community to enjoy, and to keep the city running smoothly. We are currently consulting on our Asset Management Plans. To have your say on this consultation before 9 October 2020, visit www.haveyoursay.cityofpae.sa.gov.au From roads and footpaths, to buildings, parks, and our fleet vehicles; proper asset management helps us to not only maintain infrastructure to the high level expected by our community, but to do it in the most cost-effective way. It means we can be proactive with our projects and fix problems before they become a concern to extend the life of our assets, and also helps us decide when to replace old assets with new ones.

15.01.2022 Remember a few weeks ago when we showed you a peek at some of the 'Tiny Gems' local artists would be installing around the place? Well, today's #PAEplaces is one of the first! 14.01.2022 In March 2020, a nine-year-old PAE resident expressed her concerns about the impact of cigarette smoke near playgrounds which impacted her sister’s ability to play. She came and spoke at a council meeting and we listened to her concerns then made a commitment to address smoking around playgrounds. To help us spread the message that our City of PAE playgrounds are now smoke-free, we are inviting primary school aged children to design a poster that tells a story about cigarette... smoke near playgrounds and how it impacts other people. Four winning poster designs will be selected by the Mayor, and will be printed and distributed. They will each receive an Officeworks voucher to assist with the purchase of school supplies for 2021. To enter, visit https://www.cityofpae.sa.gov.au//smoke-free-playgrounds-co to read the terms and conditions, then complete the form and upload your entry using the template provided.

13.01.2022 Due to numerous complaints about overnight camping and associated issues on the foreshore at Semaphore South, parking restrictions have now been installed which prohibit parking in this one carpark between 10pm and 5am. 08.01.2022 The state government Department for Environment and Water is continuing its beach replenishment program with sand being moved from Semaphore to West Beach this spring beginning Monday 12 October 2020. The works are expected to be completed by Friday 6 November 2020. The sand along Adelaide’s coast naturally moves northward, by the wind and waves. This causes sand to build up on our northern beaches, such as Semaphore, and causes sand loss and erosion at beaches including West... Beach. Starting on Monday 12 October, sand will be collected from between the Semaphore and Largs Bay jetties and moved along the beach to Point Malcolm and then on to West Beach. The community and beach users are asked to please take extra care on the beaches while the works are underway and adhere to all safety signage and flagging in place. The works are part of the state government’s $48.4 million project to secure the future of our coastline, which will see an underground pipeline constructed from Semaphore to West Beach, reducing the use of trucks on our beaches to move sand in the future. Visit the coast info van during the works or the Department for Environment and Water’s coast website www.environment.sa.gov.au/coasts to learn more. Semaphore (near jetty) Monday 12 October, 10:00am 3:00pm Tuesday 13 October, 12:00pm 5:00pm Wednesday 14 October, 8:00am 1:00pm Monday 19 October 24 October (various days and times) West Beach (Esplanade reserve, Henley Sailing Club) Thursday 15 October, 1:00pm 6:00pm Friday 16 October, 10:00am 3:00pm Saturday 17 October, 8:00am 12:00pm Dates and times are subject to change.

"As a dog-mum of two it’s not surprising I enjoy visiting Roy Amer Reserve in Oakden, LJ Lewis Dog Park in Northfield and walking around the lakes in Lightsview, often with a coffee and ‘puppuccino’. I’m excited to see the Lights Community and Sports Centre completed, which offers an inclusive space for our community to enjoy as well as a place to call home for the North Adelaide Rockets. I’m proud to be part of our strong and inclusive community and look forward to working alongside residents to improve the places and spaces we know and love"

06.01.2022 Be part of the solution. Ocean litter is one of the most solvable global challenges of our time, and the change starts with us. We are working with Conservation Volunteers Australia to clean up Magazine Creek Wetland in Gilman. There will be a cleanup on Saturday 30 January, 8:30am until 12pm. Due to Covid, you will need to register ahead of the event at https://volunteerportal.conservationvolunteers.com.au/s/mak and click on SeaToSourceSA. Alongside Conservation Volunteers Australia, we’re committed to reducing the amount of plastic litter entering our creeks, rivers and oceans and causing harm to the animals that call these places home. Plastic is around 60-95% of the litter in our waterways and oceans, and causes a wide range of issues in these environments. Every single item removed helps!

05.01.2022 The first centre span has been transported from Polonia Reserve to its final location over Regency Road using Self-Propelled M...odular Transporters (SPMTs), the same technology used to transport the Main South Road Bridge and Ayliffes Road Bridge for the Darlington Upgrade Project. By constructing the bridge spans off-site and using SPMTs to install them, the impact on traffic is minimised and fewer road closures are required. The SPMTs will move at a speed of around 100 metres per hour. It is expected to take up to two days to transport both bridge spans and assemble them into place. A reminder that traffic restrictions remain in place around the intersection of South Road and Regency Road, for further information please visit: https://r2palliance.com.au/project/latest-news/janworks-2021

05.01.2022 While the new Port Adelaide Plaza is being fitted out they have a bit of empty space which will be leased soon. We took the opportunity to commission local artists Thomas Readett from T.R. Visual Arts, and Jay Hann from Strukture Design, to create a mural that helps us highlight the important part everyone plays in keeping our environment clean from litter. Reducing litter entering our environment and waterways has a positive impact on people, animals, birds, and marine life. To help keep the river free from litter, Adopt A Spot Scheme undertake regular cleanups and are always on the look out for new volunteers.

05.01.2022 If you have any questions about how this may affect you using one of our council facilities, or attending an activity or program, please give us a call on 8405 6600, or contact City of PAE Libraries, Lefevre Community Stadium, Enfield Community Centre, Kilburn Community Centre or The Lights Community and Sports Centre directly.

04.01.2022 We have gone solar! An additional 44kw solar system has been installed on the roof of the Civic Centre as part of our bigger plan to reduce our operational carbon emission footprint and further contribute to our 40% emission reduction already achieved since 2009. This now takes the total solar system at the Civic Centre to 94kw and will save 57.2 tonnes of CO2 per year from entering the atmosphere, while also saving us $15,860 per year in electricity costs We now manage 13 solar sites with a total capacity of 414.7kw and have two more medium-size solar systems to be installed at Kilburn Depot and Kilburn Community Centre by the end of the year. This forms part of our Energy and Water Efficiency Management Plan 2022, aimed at reducing emissions and energy consumption from our vehicle fleet, buildings and lighting.

04.01.2022 The Regency Road to Pym Street (R2P) Project is undertaking major works this week until 5am Monday, 11 January 2021, to install the overpass at the intersection of South Road and Regency Road. The works require the partial closure of the South Road and Regency Road intersection. During this time businesses in the area remain open and would love to see you. The project team has been working hard to make access as easy as possible for customers, with access routes to businesses available at https://r2palliance.com.au/project/latest-news/janworks-2021 The Alliance website also has details on the many businesses available in the vicinity of the South Road and Regency Road intersection, and details of the major works happening this week.

04.01.2022 There are a number of large trees that were scheduled to be removed as part of a private construction project in North Haven. Rather than just letting them be removed by the developer, we saw an opportunity to relocate them instead. Our Parks and Gardens team spoke with the developer, and today we will be relocating them to the median strip on Port Rd where they will join similar trees. This is a tricky process which involves some big equipment, but it is something we have done many times before.

04.01.2022 This week we drop into Dingly Dell Reserve in Blair Athol for #PAEplaces. This artwork is called "Spirit of Place" and was created back in 2003 by Anna McLean and local residents from around the reserve.

03.01.2022 Our waste contractor Cleanaway has been impacted by driver illness leading to 6 drivers unable to work today (not Covid19). This is likely to have an impact on this week’s Friday recycling collections. Cleanaway are doing everything possible to complete all of today’s bin collections, however, recycling bins in Taperoo, North Haven and Osborne may not be emptied today. If your recycle bin is not emptied today, you do NOT need to report this to WasteLine. Instead, please leave... the recycle bin out and it will be collected in an additional run on Saturday morning. We apologise for any inconvenience. (EDIT: we just noticed the year is wrong in the pic. It should be 2021 not 20 however we are unable to update the pic in the post. Hey, everyone makes this mistake at least once early in a new year!)

03.01.2022 As seems to be the case every year, the end of 2020 is creeping up on us, and what a year it has been!! So many people have been affected by COVID in many diffe...rent ways. One group significantly impacted by the pandemic are Year 12 students who have been affected by the disruptions and uncertainty of times ahead. Each year we let the Year 12s across PAE know that we are thinking of them, and this year this seems even more important. To do this, the attached banner will be displayed across PAE and also on the fences of all high schools within PAE. Exams will be held between Thursday 20th October until Tuesday 18th November, so during this time please think about all the Year 12’s who are in the final stages of their high school journey and if you know anyone who is in Year 12, please take the time to wish them well and ask them if they are ok!!

03.01.2022 We had an important visitor drop in to the Civic Centre today for a meeting to finalise the details of a special surprise we are planning for next week. He didn't catch us snapping this pic of him through the window... Shhhhhh we'll tell you more soon!

03.01.2022 The newly upgraded Jetty Road in Largs Bay has been finished and is now a welcoming place for locals and visitors alike in this popular destination. Wider footpaths allow for safer pedestrian access, as well as future outdoor dining for nearby businesses. The previously high kerbing has been lowered, and we've installed new ramps for easy access. There are upgraded pedestrian crossings. Safety has been improved with better and brighter street lighting. The road has been resur...faced. There is improved parking right along the street. We've planted new verges, trees and grass. There are also new flagpoles along the road as well which will regularly feature new flags created by local groups. To finish off the project, there are some fantastic new sculptures along the footpath by Quentin Gore Artist, who worked with the local community to create these four vessel-shaped granite forms and wooden figures which celebrate the rich cultural diversity of the area. The sculptures feature text developed alongside our Aboriginal Advisory Panel member Mickey O' Brien. The project started with SA Power Networks undergrounding the power, and we took the opportunity to upgrade the whole street. This will deliver long term local community and economic development outcomes for the street and immediate community and help bring people together on this popular street.

03.01.2022 We have a dedicated group of volunteers who undertake amazing work in the local community. Their work allows us to deliver programs that otherwise wouldn't be possible, including community support for people in need, transport, community programs, guided tours, and so much more. On behalf of our community, thank you for everything you do

03.01.2022 If it tears like paper then you can put it in your recycling bin. If it's more difficult to tear, if it's waxy, or if it has a laminate on it, then it goes in your regular waste bin.

02.01.2022 Today is going to be hot, and the two days following will be even hotter If you need to cool off, Port Adelaide Library, Greenacres Library, The Parks Library, and our Community Centres are air-conditioned and open during the day. Enfield and Semaphore libraries are currently closed for renovations. Semaphore pop-up will be closed on Saturday, and Enfield pop-up will be closed on Friday and Saturday due to the weather. In extreme heat, you are more likely to become unwell ...much faster than normal, when temperatures are hotter than 35C, your body may not be able to cool you down enough for you to stay healthy. Extreme heat events are a risk for anyone who doesn't take precautions to keep cool, even those who are fit and healthy. However, those most at risk are elderly people, babies and young children, and people with a medical condition or disability. Our Community Emergency Management Plan has more help and advice for coping with extreme heat www.cityofpae.sa.gov.au/community/services/cemp/extreme-heat

01.01.2022 Like many others, Seaside Pilates in Largs Bay had to change the way they operated through COVID19. It has been a test of resilience for local businesses, and we've worked in collaboration with Living Stories to tell their stories.
