25.01.2022 Guess were not the only ones looking for a new Concert Band MD! Anyone looking for a musical director opportunity, see below
25.01.2022 This week for Meet the Bander were introducing Jen, mainly because nobody else has sent through their answers yet (hint hint). Jen is a writer, but still finds it odd referring to herself in the third person. Jen hails from a small mining village in the North East of England and moved to Perth three years ago. Its best to never ask her what part of Ireland shes from. She played for Edinburgh Brass Band and Newtongrange Silver Band while living and working in Edinburgh as a... journalist and ended up playing at the WA State Championships with CoP just six weeks after moving here in 2017. Youll find her sitting in the solo horn seat, right in front of a troublesome tuba player who keeps nicking her pencil ... When did you first start playing an instrument? I started off playing violin in primary school, but I always wanted to play saxophone so when I went up to big school I put my name down for sax auditions. I got the wrong time (and day) and ended up auditioning for cornet. Ive been playing for over 20 years now and Im still rubbish at semiquaver runs. Which band are you in? City of Perth Brass Band and previously City of Perth Marching Corps. How long have you been in the band? Three years. Whats the best thing about being a member of City of Perth Band? The people, the music and the enthusiasm. Ill always remember landing in Perth after a 23-hour flight at 5pm on ANZAC Day to an email from Kelly Bradley asking whether Id be in on time to play the ANZAC Day parade, which had come and gone that morning. Needless to say if I had been, I would have. What instrument do you play? Tenor horn. How did you end up playing that instrument? I started on cornet and played that at Newtongrange, but I moved to flugel at Edinburgh Brass Band. When I joined CoP they already had a flugel player (and a very good one too), so they asked if Id play tenor horn. Ill admit I was surprised to find I liked it best out of every instrument Ive played so far. What are your three favourite pieces of music? Its hard to pick just three. Phillip Littlemores arrangement of Morten Laurisens choral piece O Magnum Mysterium. Wild Mountain Thyme by Alan Fernie, the flugel solo I played in my last concert with EBB. Breath of Souls by Paul Lovatt-Cooper, which Ive never played but heard 20 bands tackle at the 2011 National Band Championships of Great Britain (Brighouse & Rastrick won). Piece of music youd use if you ran out of loo roll? Colonel Bogey, Simoraine, Mary Poppins or anything that only has offbeats in the horn part. Best banding moment? Unexpectedly winning B Grade with the Brass Band at States last year, then coming second last and being beaten by a 12-year-old in the Slow Melody Solo comp the next day. Moral of the story: dont drink and toot. Tell us something strange but true about yourself? I used to have my nose pierced and the hole is still there, so sometimes when Im breathing it whistles.
25.01.2022 For anyone who missed out on our sold out concert at Kalamunda the other week, heres your next chance to see us perform. 24.01.2022 This week on Meet the Bander we're featuring another Brass Band stalwart. Jo is the Brass Band librarian as well as one of the band's longtime players and most cheerful members. Outside of band she's married to husband, Rob, and is mum to two daughters, Emma and Mia. Jo works as an Educational and Developmental Psychologist with Catholic Education WA. When she's not up to her eyes in sheet music sorting, you'll find her on adventures with her kids, catching up with friends or... watching crime shows and trashy TV. Which band are you in? I play in the Brass Band, although did have a brief stint playing with the Marching Corps (Perth Thundercorps). How long have you been in the band? Since 2003. What's the best thing about being in the band? The people and the "bandter"! We've had people from all walks of life in band and I've made some awesome friends. What instrument do you play? Euphonium and baritone. How did I end up playing that instrument? When I started high school I had a mouthful of braces and teeth going everywhere but, as luck would have it, this embouchure is apparently ideal for euphonium! Who knew? I played eupho with the infamous brass trio BWC, with the inaugural Perth Royal Show Marching Band and with WA Symphonic Wind Ensemble for a bit, then had a break from playing for several years while I completed my degree at uni. I got my first proper job at a school in Albany and saw the music teacher packing away a euphonium in the instrument store. Through that chance encounter I started playing eupho again with City of Albany Band. When I moved back to Perth and first joined City of Perth, I hoped to continue to play eupho but well ... I soon realised there was absolutely no chance of band stalwarts and eupho superstars Robert or Danny giving up their chairs, so baritone it was. What are your three favourite pieces of music? Christmas Joy March, Scottish Dances and Gospel Brass Machine (that last one partly for the music and partly because I find Pete's Robot Arm conducting amusing). Which music would you use if you ran out of loo roll? Mr Jums, anything from the musical 'Cats', Simoraine or Riverdance. One of the only perks of being Brass Band librarian is that these pieces are routinely "missing" from the folders. Best banding moment? Most recently, the 2019 state band competition. Not just the win (which was awesome) but the whole process of rehearsal, hard work, band camp, and camaraderie. It all helped improve our playing and connection as a group. Tell us something strange but true about yourself: The smell of fresh rain, especially on dry concrete, makes me want to vomit.
23.01.2022 How many City of Perth banders can you spot in this video created by CoP brass bander Maeve? (Hint: theres more than one, there may even be more than one Maeve!) Guaranteed to get your toes tappin! https://youtu.be/AYwENXSjMvc

It’s the Brass Band’s turn this Sunday, when they’ll perform their Remembrance Concert at St Mary’s Church in South Perth. There are still tickets available, get them while you can!

22.01.2022 Were introducing another double-bander in the form of Jane Coffey today, percussionist extraordinaire with the Brass Band and Concert Band. Jane hasnt been with City of Perth long, but shes certainly made her mark. Shes encouraging to other members, is always up for a chat over a glass of wine or a cuppa and can usually be found cracking jokes over in the percussion section. Jane is an artist and is very creative, a skill which has come in handy when making adjustments an...d repairs to various percussion items. So without further ado ... Which band are you in? Brass Band and Concert Band How long have you been in the band? Two years Whats the best thing about being a member of City of Perth Band? Its a beautiful community of people. Band camp is so much fun, unfortunately it was cancelled this year but that hopefully means next year will be bigger and better so its a good time to join (hint hint)! What instrument do you play? Percussion When did you first start playing an instrument? I took the recorder very seriously in Primary School. Mum bought me a cassette tape with Elizabethan theme tunes on it that I used to play along to day and night. At school I envied anyone playing the xylophone. When I went to high school I put my name down for every musical instrument. I was selected for percussion which is almost every instrument. I also play piano, clarinet and my daughters violin. Does anyone else in your family play? My sisters and I used to try to borrow as many instruments from school as possible. At one point I remember we had a piano, a drum kit, full size marimba, electric guitar, clarinet, flute, baritone sax and lots of percussion instruments. My sister is a professional pianist. What do you do outside band? I have my own shop on Angove St. in North Perth selling my own designs inspired by WA native flora and fauna that we also make ourselves. I also create surface pattern designs for other companies and pictograms for health and related industries. What are your three favourite pieces of music? I do like the Alan Fernie arrangements that weve played in Brass Band, theyre quite fun for percussion. Piece of music youd use if you ran out of loo roll? Anything with TACET written on it, Britney Spears Baby One More Time, slow exposed shaker is trickier than you might think, and I was also pleased to put that solo high timp roll in Jubilee Overture behind me. Best banding moment? When Brian bought along a Orange and Poppy Seed Cake to Band camp and also winning B Grade with the Brass Band at the States last year against the odds. Tell us something strange but true about yourself? I volunteer at my local bushland and love creeping around at night showing people where the scorpions live.
22.01.2022 City of Perth Concert Band performing at the 2019 WA State Championships.
22.01.2022 Oh would you look at this lovely lot! The City of Perth Concert Band went back to (socially distanced) rehearsals last night and you should have seen the smiles on their faces. Thanks to Brian Dodds for stepping in as interim conductor. In our first concert since lockdown restrictions were eased, well be performing some old favourites, some contemporary tunes and maybe even a couple you can sing along to. So grab your tickets and get ready for an afternoon of music and entertainment at Kalamunda Perfor...ming Arts Centre on Sunday 30th August. https://www.facebook.com/events/397297657893109/
19.01.2022 Weve just about had enough of peace and quiet at City of Perth Band and were missing rehearsals like crazy, so in the interest of continuing to provide entertainment to the WA community weve decided to introduce some members of our three wonderful bands. Yes, we nicked the idea from our friends at Perthshire Brass over in Scotland, but hopefully they wont mind too much. We already share a bit of our name so whats one more thing? ;) First up is Jacqui, one of the newer me...mbers of our Concert Band. Jacqui learned piano as a child and gained a scholarship in singing at Perth Modern school. About 6 years ago she thought shed take up a second instrument and got her hands on an alto sax. Since then shes also started playing clarinet, picked up piano again and just started dabbling in percussion. Unlike many of us, shes an avid practicer and probably averages 3-4 hrs daily across all of her instruments. Her husband plays guitar and is great at playing by ear and improvising, which she says are her areas of weakness. Which band are you in? City of Perth Concert Band How long have you been in the band? I have been in the band for around 12 months now. Whats the best thing about being a member of City of Perth Band? Its made up of such a friendly and encouraging bunch of musicians! Plus I love the uniform, oh and the marching. Actually I love everything about it. What instrument do you play? I play alto saxophone. How did you end up playing that instrument? I thought it looked cool so picked it up and started learning it when I was 42! What are your three favourite pieces of music? I loved playing Marvin Hamlisch because I had a really cool solo in it , but I think my absolute favourite so far is Sleepers Wake. Its so beautiful. I havent actually come across any pieces so far that I havent enjoyed playing so its difficult to pick a third piece. Piece of music youd use if you ran out of loo roll? Hahahahaha. I dont think Ive ever hated a piece enough. There are definitely frustrating pieces out there but they are usually good learning opportunities. Best banding moment? Marching in the City of Perth Christmas Pageant! I always wanted to be in the pageant as a child and finally got to be in it for the first time at 47 Tell us something strange but true about yourself? I used to represent the State in womens soccer.
19.01.2022 Lest We Forget Brass bander Brian Dodds performing the Last Post at the intersection of Barrack Street and Murray Street this morning.
19.01.2022 Were heading over to our Perth Thundercorps to introduce the next bander. Ned Holland is trombone player extraordinaire with the marching corps. Hes always up for a laugh and a bit of bandter at gigs and rehearsals and can usually be found soloing like a boss or cracking jokes. Hes also in The Steve Hensby Band, Junkadelic Brass Band, Violet Orange and Liquid Liquid, and loves musicals, having performed in Hairspray, Wicked, Les Miserables and Tarzan to name a few. A video...grapher and editor, Ned is the guy you go to for anything film, and we reckon it wont be long before we see his name in lights in Hollywood. Which band are you in? Perth Thundercorps aka Marching Corps. How long have you been in the band? About 4 years now. Whats the best thing about being a member of City of Perth Band? You get to play to HUGE crowds and go behind-the-scenes at awesome events like Wildcats Games and at Crown Casino. What instrument do you play? Trombone How did you end up playing that instrument? After scoring highest in a music competency test in grade 5 I was allowed to choose from trumpet, trombone, or clarinet. It was a no brainer. What are your three favourite pieces of music? Sing Sing Sing, 25 or 6 to 4, Atchafalaya. Piece of music youd use if you ran out of loo roll? Shut Up and Dance. Best banding moment? Probably one of my first Wildcats marches where we led a huge following of fans to the arena. It actually felt like we really were leading an army. Tell us something strange but true about yourself? Apparently when I was a kid Id put stones in one side of my mouth like a squirrel while at the same time eating dinner in the other side.

18.01.2022 Just announced! The City of Perth Concert Band's first concert out of lockdown will be in Success, WA. The band's annual Family and Friends concert will be taking some New Directions (see what we did there?) on Sunday 1 November at 3pm. Tickets are just $20 but, there are only 100 available and they cannot be purchased on the door. Only online. Get yourself one before they run out!
18.01.2022 Thanks to everyone who came along to the City of Perth Brass Band's concert at St Mary's Church, South Perth yesterday. In case you missed it, here's a video of the very talented Maeve Lander playing Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez ('Orange juice' to you) on the flugel.
17.01.2022 Next up on Meet the Bander were introducing Rosemary! Rosemary joined the Concert Band two years ago on french horn and it seems she hasnt looked back since. Shes become a stalwart of the band and has often lent a hand at band fundraisers and sausage sizzles, including a particularly wet and rainy one in 2018. So without further ado ... When did you first start playing an instrument? In primary school I learned the Suzuki violin method and took piano lessons out of school.... I started learning the french horn in high school. After school I played for a few years in PCO. Then I didnt play much at all for about 20 years apart from a brief stint playing Triffids and Go Betweens covers with the Darlington Super Group (aka some friends up the road). Does anyone else in your family play? Yes but just for enjoyment. My parents both play the piano nicely. My sister teaches music in a local primary school. My son learned the clarinet as part of the IMSS program. What do you do outside of band? Outside of band I work as graphic designer and website developer in a business I run with my husband. Im also quite involved in a number of community groups including Baigup Wetlands Interest Group and Environment House / Perth Ecoshop & Sustainability Services in Bayswater. Which band are you in? City of Perth Concert Band. How long have you been in the band? Two years now. Whats the best thing about being a members of the City of Perth band? Playing music with others in a supportive and encouraging environment. What instrument do you play? French horn. How did you end up playing that instrument? I had the chance to choose it in high school. Who wouldnt want to play such a spectacular looking instrument? What are you three favourite pieces of music? Out of the music we play in band I think the Triumphal March from Opera Aida, Autumn Leaves by Johnny Mercer, and Doctor Who: Through Time and Space. Piece of music you would use if you ran out of loo paper? Hrmm ... well Im not a big fan of the lyrics to Advance Australia Fair as I think they have unintended flaws. Musically I find it quite a dull tune and feel it was a missed opportunity to create a genuinely unifying and rousing national anthem. Best banding moment? Winning the 2020 National Band Championships playing Pikes Peak in the beautiful Scotch College Memorial Hall ... Oh wait! I must have dreamed this! Thanks COVID ... The best banding moment is still to come! Tell us something strange but true about yourself? I owe my return to playing horn to a random act of kindness from one of my musical heroes Robert Perlick-Molinari from the French Horn Rebellion (a Brooklyn-based electronic dance band).
17.01.2022 A huge thanks to Perth Festival for having us along to play at Highway to Hell yesterday. Its been a while since we were involved with Perth Festival but its great to be part of the biggest arts event in WA. We cant wait to make new friends of arts organisations and meet music lovers out in the community. So if youd like to collaborate with any of our ensembles, get in touch via our website https://cityofperthband.org/
17.01.2022 Due to COVID restrictions sitting in stage 4 until the end of August, were down to our LAST 40 TICKETS for the Brass Bands upcoming An Afternoon at the Proms Concert. Dont miss your chance to catch us in action alongside the Kalamunda District Pipe Band. Tickets: https://www.facebook.com/events/397297657893109/
17.01.2022 Thanks to the Echo Newspaper for this fab write up ahead of our now sold out concert in Kalamunda this Sunday. Bring on the Proms! https://echonewspaper.com.au/afternoon-at-the-proms-in-kal/
16.01.2022 Zat you, Santa Claus? No, it’s Troy ‘Michael Buble’ Fleming swinging into yesterday’s Brass Band rehearsal to get ready for a Christmas extravaganza at Kalamunda Performing Arts Centre next weekend. It all kicks off on Sunday 29 November at 2:30pm. Tickets are available online and are a steal at $20 each. Guaranteed Christmas joy!
15.01.2022 We hope you all had a reflective and peaceful ANZAC Day despite the ongoing restrictions. We figured its about time to introduce the next bander in our series so here we have Carolyn Bendotti. Carolyn is a much-loved member City of Perth Band but what you may not know is how many jobs she does behind-the-scenes; shes first to put up her hand when theres something to be done whether that be cleaning, organising or helping out at our many sausage sizzles. She started playing... when she was 12 and currently works as a teacher at a CaRE school for disengaged & disconnected students (a job shes missing terribly in these weeks of distance learning). Shes also studying psychology at Curtin University. Which band are you in? Concert Band How long have you been in the band? About 17 years thanks to Judy Bentley who invited me to join Ill be forever grateful to her and John! Whats the best thing about being a member of City of Perth Band? Music, friends, good times, playing at interesting gigs. Mostly the people though. What instrument do you play? Clarinet. I also play piano, which I learnt as an adult (so not very well!) How did you end up playing that instrument? I had to choose between flute and clarinet but I had no idea about any instrument except recorder! I decided the flute looked more awkward to play. What are your three favourite pieces of music? Anthem from the musical Chess, is my number one without a doubt. It is a beautiful song about a mans love for his country. Even more special is that the solo trumpet part was played so beautifully by our very special late friend Kerry Williams. After that I dont know how I could possibly choose! As far as band music goes, I am just lucky that I like to play any genre. Piece of music youd use if you ran out of loo roll? Anything really badly photocopied! Best banding moment? I have so many, from opening Mt Henry bridge on the freeway when in high school band (it didnt seem a big thing then), winning soloist award at Queens Cup competition in Bunbury, playing at Australia Day Citizenship ceremonies, the sad but lovely funeral service for Kerry, or going every week to band knowing that I will have the best time playing with amazing people! Tell us something strange or true about yourself? I dont really know how to answer this one maybe someone else will think of something ...?
14.01.2022 The Western Australian Band Association are doing an incredible job getting everything ready for the Nationals this year, but they need some volunteers for Easter weekend to make sure it all runs smoothly. Please get in touch if you can help.
14.01.2022 Before the rain came, Brass Banders carolling at the Twilight Makers Market.
13.01.2022 Thanks to our wonderful audience for coming to spend An Afternoon at the Proms with the City of Perth Brass Band yesterday. Despite the restrictions we had a full (half-capacity) house and the band had a great time entertaining you all. Special thanks to MC Andrew Murfin and the Kalamunda Pipe Band for joining us and making the event even more fun. Tickets for our next concert on Sunday 8 November at St Marys Church in South Perth will be available shortly, so keep your eyes peeled for updates.
13.01.2022 City of Perth Brass Band playing the opening of Land of the Long White Cloud by Philip Sparke in the B Grade of the 2019 WA State Championships.
13.01.2022 Whats the difference between a euphonium and a toilet? Several of our Brass Band members found out this morning after a barcode mix up on a discount website left them on the receiving end of a few crap jokes. After seeing euphoniums and baritone horns advertised online for $100 each at the weekend, word quickly spread. They couldnt believe their luck, so a number of players grabbed themselves a bargain. Even the percussionists got in on the action.... But come Monday morning, their joy at owning shiny new brass instruments went down the pan, as the company contacted them to say thered been a mix up with barcodes. Instead of shiny new euphs and baris, our banders had accidentally bought themselves camping toilets. Thankfully all purchases were refunded, but the dream of an entirely baritone and euphonium ensemble has been flushed into oblivion. So it just goes to show, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Image from imgflip.com
13.01.2022 Next up in our Meet the Banders series is none other than City of Perth Band Secretary and front row stalwart Brian Dodds. Brian seems to like sticks; he can often be found twirling and waving a big stick in front of the band as Drum Major while we march on parade or a little one in front of the Brass Band as he takes over conducting for the night. Either that or he likes being in charge, who knows? Brian recently retired from a long career in social work, and now works as a ...Sessional Academic at Curtin University and is a Justice of the Peace. Hes been playing cornet for a very long time (we wont say how long) and comes from a musical family who used to gather around the piano together on a Sunday night for a play-a-long. Which band are you in? City of Perth Brass Band How long have you been in the band? Since May, 2015. Whats the best thing about being a member of City of Perth Band? The camaraderie and music making. We generally have a good time while striving to achieve a great sound and performance. Banding is like family and a great escape from the daily routines and issues. What instrument do you play? Solo cornet. How did you end up playing that instrument? My older half-brother played the trumpet and encouraged me to join the Young Australia League Training Band. The Music Director (the late Sammy Sharp) thought Id be suited to a cornet and so the journey began. What are your three favourite pieces of music? Bring Him Home from Les Miserables, the Wind Beneath My Wings and You Raise Me Up. Piece of music youd use if you ran out of loo roll? Its Time to Say Goodbye. Best banding moment? There are several, but the following three probably stand out the most. Conducting the City of Belmont Band in the 1979 National Band Championships held in WA and winning the D Grade, as well as winning the WA State C Grade championship later in that year. The second occasion was conducting DIVA Brass at the Geraldton Sunshine Festival in October, 2012 (I was the only male in the band). Finally, conducting the City of Perth Brass Band from Oct 2016 to July 2017. Tell us something strange but true about yourself? I used to have auburn hair, but since 2002, have adopted the bald style. Unfortunately, I come from a long line of baldies.
12.01.2022 A huge thanks to @perthfest for having us along to play at Highway to Hell yesterday. Its been a while since we were involved with Perth Festival but its great to be part of the biggest arts event in WA. We cant wait to make new friends of arts organisations and meet music out in the community. So if youd like to collaborate with any of our ensembles, get in touch via the website link in our bio.
11.01.2022 Happy Sunday! Not only was it our City of Perth Band AGM this morning, it was also Dale Pointons first public appearance as the new Concert Band MD. Have a listen to the band playing Oh What a Night! and check out our stories for more. And if you like what you hear, get clicking on that link in our bio thatll take you to our Facebook page where you can book a ticket for their upcoming concert New Directions on the afternoon of Sunday 1 November. Dont forget to give our page a like while youre there to get all the news and info on upcoming concerts.
11.01.2022 TNT Who knew AC/DC and brass bands were such a perfect fit. Thanks to the crowds who cheered us on at Highway to Hell.
11.01.2022 It's just under a week until the City of Perth Brass Band Remembrance Sunday concert at St Mary's Church, South Perth THIS Sunday 8 November at 2:30pm. We've got limited capacity due to COVID restrictions, but there are still a few tickets available, so if you want to come along get in quick! Tickets are only available online via the link below. And if you think a Remembrance theme sounds a bit sombre, think again! We'll be playing marches, contemporary pieces, hymns and more... at this family-friendly event. https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/remembrance-tickets-1179343
10.01.2022 Rehearsals may be back on but that doesnt mean were stopping our Meet the Bander series. This week its Sondras turn. For anyone who doesnt know her, Sondra is a stalwart of the City of Perth Band organisation with a heart of gold and a seemingly endless enthusiasm for music. When shes not showing newbies the ropes or jumping onto a different instrument to her usual trombone, youll find her playing in Town of Victoria Park Brass and the Darling Range Wind Ensemble, hav...ing a pint with friends or taking selfies with her cats. Which band are you in? I play in the Brass Band and the Perth Thundercorps (Marching Corps). How long have you been in the band? I joined the Marching Corps five years ago, then the Brass Band a couple of years later. I also played in the Concert Band for a few years. Whats the best thing about being a member of City of Perth Band? The awesome members in the organisation; they make me want to be a better musician every time we are together. What instrument do you play? Trombone. How did you end up playing that instrument? The Dave Way music program came to my primary school. With the help of my cousin (an ex CoP player ) I had narrowed my choices down to Saxophone and Trombone. Everyone else was picking sax so I decided to be different. What are your three favourite pieces of music? This is very hard to decide because I have a new favourite every week but my Brass Band top three are Skyline (by Middleton Music), Floral Dance and Barnard Castle (or maybe Buglers Holiday ) In Marching Corps my favourites are Fireball, Happy and Tio Macaco. Piece of music youd use if you ran out of loo roll? Sweet Caroline (for both bands!!) Best banding moment? The whole of my time with Marching Corps has been a pretty epic adventure but being a part of our first season with the Perth Wildcats was amazing. In Brass Band it has to be winning B Grade at the States last year and all the fun and hard work leading up to that moment. Tell us something strange but true about yourself? I never watch current TV shows because I hate to wait for the next episode. I usually wait until I have a few seasons to get through, if not the entire series, before Ill dig in.
10.01.2022 This week were introducing one of the newer members of the City of Perth Band family. Josh moved here from the Philippines in early 2019 and has been involved with the Brass Band and Marching Corps ever since. Hes currently working for a WA building group, but he spends his spare time watching marching bands on parade to learn about different styles and tricks he can pick up. Josh found himself the centre of attention at one Wildcats basketball game when one of the cymbals ...he was playing went on a rogue dash across the court mid-performance. When did you first start playing an instrument? I started playing it our local community band at the age of 13 in Maragondon, Cavite, Philippines. Our bands name is Primero Uno Band mentored by Jace Cresini and Jon Malimban. I later joined the San Juan Nepomuceno Band of Malibay Pasay City, Philippines under the baton of Prof. Herminigildo G. Ranera. From there I learned more and gained more experience of being a percussionist in both classical and marching band style of playing. Which band are you in? City of Perth Brass Band and City of Perth Marching Corps. How long have you been in the band? One year. Whats the best thing about being a member of City of Perth Band? Being able to play music and learn from people who have more experience than I do. What instrument do you play? Percussion. Timpani in the Brass Band. How did you end up playing that instrument? When I was young my favourite movie was Drumline which starred Nick Cannon. I had that movie on DVD and I always imagined myself just like Devon Miles (Nick Cannons character). Since I was young Ive always been amazed by drummers. My parents would panic thinking I was lost just to find out I was following the marching band who was going around town. Also, I just love the feeling that you give the heart beat to the music that everyone is playing. What are your three favourite pieces of music? 1812 Overture by Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky, African Sumphony by Van McCoy and Gospel Brass Machine by Mark Taylor. Piece of music youd use if you ran out of loo roll? Probably Colonel Bogey March by F.J. Ricketts or anything that has TACET written on the chart. Best banding moment? Playing with the Brass Band at The Cummins Theatre at Merredin, WA last August. Tell us something strange but true about yourself? I dont change socks before any major performance so that the luck wont go away!
09.01.2022 Look up to the balcony, and what will you see? Six members of City of Perth Brass Band, of course, just visible at new City of Perth Mayor Basil Zempilas’s swearing in ceremony last Monday. It was an honour to play at this event for Basil and the rest of the new councillors, and to play WA Governor Kim Beazley into the room. That’s Mayor Basil Zempilas on the left at the front; Kim is the one clapping on the right, hopefully for us! Pic by Jessica Wyld Photography for City of Perth.
08.01.2022 The next player to feature in our Meet the Banders series really needs no introduction. Margaret Thomas is our much-loved Principal Cornet in the Brass Band, ex-President and a long-time member of City of Perth Band. Margaret is incredibly generous with her enthusiasm, time and her encouragement of other players in all ensembles. When shes not stunning audiences with her playing, she can be found moonlighting as the Mayor of Kalamunda, working as CEO of Retirees WA or riding... one of her many beautiful horses up in the hills. Which band do you play in? Brass Band. How long have you been a member of City of Perth Band? Forever Im not really sure but about 30 years. Whats the best thing about being in City of Perth Band? Doing something with my gorgeous daughter Kelly who I sit next to every week. Also the band members; its like being part of any great sporting team or church group or being in a great work environment. The members of the band have become very important to me, like a second family and its enjoyable watching people grow and move through their lives. The City of Perth Band has such an incredible mix of people. I remember sitting next to a guy once in band who was quite shy and even though I had known him for several years, I never knew until we were on a band trip that he was a nuclear physicist! The talent and skills of people in the band are amazing. Its so interesting to hear about all the unusual things that people are good at like cave diving! What instrument do you play? Cornet of course! I started in a school band when I was 10 years old along with Brian Dodds and a few others who have been in the band. I always wanted to play the cornet because it seemed like the cornet got the best parts (like the melody) and I wanted to play the best parts. Fortunately it suited me. It is also the easiest instrument to lug around the street on a march. What are your three favourite pieces? Thats really hard because there are so many. Anything that is really hard or challenging like the test pieces and classics, fun pieces like Bohemian Rhapsody and just beautiful arrangements like Tim Middletons pieces and Amazing Grace. Which piece would you use if you ran out of loo roll? Thats a Plenty if we play that piece again I will scream and rip it to shreds!! Best banding moment? The weekend the Brass Band had at Pickering Brook last year to prepare for States the band playing was fabulous and the team spirit and fun we had was great. Winning B Grade wasnt bad either. Tell us something strange but true about yourself: I once rode a horse 650 kms to Kalgoorlie over two weeks on the 100 Year Heritage Pipeline Ride and another time rode 14,000 kms over 4 weeks to Townsville and back on a Harley. I like challenges.

07.01.2022 They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.... Despite the usual ANZAC services and events being cancelled, you may have heard members of City Of Perth Band playing the Last Post from their driveways this morning, or a hymn or two in the street. We hope youll be marking this day in your own way, in your own homes, as many of the band are doing during these strange times. Take time for a moment of reflection and to thank the servicemen and women of this country, past and present.
07.01.2022 This week on Meet the Bander were featuring another Brass Band stalwart. Jo is the Brass Band librarian as well as one of the bands longtime players and most cheerful members. Outside of band shes married to husband, Rob, and is mum to two daughters, Emma and Mia. Jo works as an Educational and Developmental Psychologist with Catholic Education WA. When shes not up to her eyes in sheet music sorting, youll find her on adventures with her kids, catching up with friends or... watching crime shows and trashy TV. Which band are you in? I play in the Brass Band, although did have a brief stint playing with the Marching Corps (Perth Thundercorps). How long have you been in the band? Since 2003. Whats the best thing about being in the band? The people and the "bandter"! Weve had people from all walks of life in band and Ive made some awesome friends. Christmas Joy March, Scottish Dances and Gospel Brass Machine (that last one partly for the music and partly because I find Petes Robot Arm conducting amusing). Which music would you use if you ran out of loo roll? Mr Jums, anything from the musical Cats, Simoraine or Riverdance.
07.01.2022 Can you believe this time last year our Concert Band and Brass Band were performing at the WA State Band Championships? It was a brilliant weekend, with wins for both bands in their respective grades and for some of our soloists. Check out the videos in the posts below for some clips of their winning performances which will have to do in lieu of any kind of live contest this year. As always a huge thanks to Western Australian Band Association for all the work they do organising and running enjoyable events like these.
05.01.2022 Next up in our band intro series is none other than Brass Band stalwart Kelly Bradley. Kelly can be found sitting next to the principal cornet (who just happens to be her mum) or taking the top seat herself on occasion. Not only was Kelly Bandsperson of the Year for Brass Band last year, she also competed in the B Grade Solo Competition at States AND the Slow Melody Solo comp, plus shes also held numerous committee positions (including band President). To say shes a champ ...is an understatement, so without further ado ... Which band are you in? The City of Perth Brass Band. I did a bit of a stint in the Concert Band when it was first started a long long time ago. How long have you been in the band? I joined back in 1993 but had some time off when I was in the Army over east and also a few months when each of my kids were born. So taking out the time off it would be about 20 years. Whats the best thing about being a member of City of Perth Band? The band members are like my other family. Going to weekly rehearsals is a way to leave work and a hectic household behind each week and see my friends, have a laugh and play beautiful (most of the time) music. I enjoy the camaraderie and banter that goes on; I like to experience the highs of winning a competition with my good mates and the fun we have at camps, but also the seriousness of making sure we play at our best and not let the team down. I love that for the moment that I am playing I can forget about everything else in my life except the music and that I have had the opportunity for so many years to sit next to Mum and share in our passion together. What instrument do you play? Solo cornet. How did you end up playing that instrument? I actually started out playing the cello but didnt really enjoy it and figured if I whinged about having to play in WAYO enough then Mum would let me quit. I had the opportunity to play the trumpet at school in Year 6 so I changed over to that and have been playing ever since. What are your three favourite pieces of music? This is a tough one. I would have to say Country Scene by Goff Richards would be up there as the band played it at my wedding. I also like Concertpiece for Cornet by James Curnow and Fire in the Blood by Paul Lovatt-Cooper Piece of music youd use if you ran out of loo roll? Definitely Britney Spearss Baby One More Time. Best banding moment? Winning the B Grade State Competition last year with City of Perth Brass Band but another amazing banding moment was playing with John Farnham with the Army Band in the old Entertainment Centre for the SAS Memorial concert in 1997. Tell us something strange or true about yourself? I used to be an Aircraft Engineer fixing Blackhawk Helicopters in the Army and I enjoy crocheting blankets and other crochet projects.
05.01.2022 And here we have the City of Perth Brass Band flying in with a rousing rendition of Dambusters. Thanks to Father Nick at St Mary's Church, South Perth for the video! If you want to catch the Brass Band in action again soon, check out our Christmas Concert at Kalamunda Performing Arts Centre on 29 November and get your tickets before they sell out! https://www.facebook.com/events/722513185273737/
04.01.2022 While this is disappointing for our bands that have been working hard for months on their test pieces, we fully understand and support the decision made to cancel the Australian National Band Championships in Perth this year. A big big thank you to our awesome friends at WABA and the Nationals committee who worked hard to organise this event. Players: that doesnt mean you can stop practising!
04.01.2022 Are you a music professional looking for an exciting new opportunity? Do you have experience in working with ensembles? Can you wave a pointy stick? Then have we got the job for you! The award-winning City of Perth Concert Band is looking for a new Musical Director. See the attached image for more details on just what we like in a conductor and if you think you fit the bill, get on it.... Youve only got until Tuesday 23 June to apply.
04.01.2022 This week Meet the Bander is by popular demand (from at least three people). Ross has been in the City of Perth Brass Band since he was just a youngster and has held the position of Treasurer on the committee for the last few years. It turns out being in Brass Band wasnt enough musical fun for him, so he and friends Raul Torres Jr. and James Chong co-founded the City of Perth Marching Corps (Perth Thundercorps) back in 2013. If hes not hiding behind a tuba somewhere, youll... find him in the office sorting out the band finances, keeping everyone in check as Brass Band Sergeant or flirting with the solo horn player. When did you first start playing an instrument? I played recorder in primary school when I was knee high, then when I moved to Australia I started playing tuba in Year 8 at secondary school. Which band are you in? Brass Band and Marching Corps. How long have you been in the band? Ive been in the Brass Band since 2003, so 17 years. Ive been in Marching Corps since the start in 2013. What instrument do you play? Tuba. How did you end up playing that instrument? They said I had a suitable embouchure for it and it would be easier for me to play with my false teeth. But Im pretty sure they just gave it to the most eager kid in the room. What are your three favourite pieces of music? The Snowman, Jupiter from The Planets, Bang Bang. Piece of music youd use if you ran out of loo roll? The Frozen movie medley. Best banding moment? Party Boat on the Singapore music tour. Tell us something strange but true about yourself? I lived in a van for six months while driving 27,500 kilometres across the US.

02.01.2022 What's the difference between a euphonium and a toilet? Several of our Brass Band members found out this morning after a barcode mix up on a discount website left them on the receiving end of a few crap jokes. After seeing euphoniums and baritone horns advertised online for $100 each at the weekend, word quickly spread. They couldn't believe their luck, so a number of players grabbed themselves a bargain. Even the percussionists got in on the action.... But come Monday morning, their joy at owning shiny new brass instruments went down the pan, as the company contacted them to say there'd been a mix up with barcodes.
