18.01.2022 Did you know mosquitoes love wet weather? They lay their eggs in stagnant, or still water such as within ponds, pots, stormwater catchments and so on, where the larvae stay for about a week before buzzing off to find a blood meal. With wetter weather expected this summer as a result of a La Nina weather pattern, we can expect to see more mosquitoes about the place. Please empty or replace water sources in your yard at least once a week if possible. Read on for more information on how to fight the bite >>

11.01.2022 Some tips to help your pets during extreme heat: - Provide your pets with a cool, shaded area with good ventilation at all times. - Make sure they have plenty of clean fresh water and extra water sources in case of spillage.... - Bring your pets indoors on hot, humid days if the indoor environment is cooler for the animal (e.g. air-conditioning, child-safe fans, open windows where possible and shade). - Do not exercise your pets in hot, humid conditions. - Do not leave your dog in a car or vehicle even when the windows are down dogs can still overheat and die. - Small animals including rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, birds, rats and mice are highly susceptible to heatstroke. On very hot days you may need to bring them into a cool place indoors, for example the laundry.

10.01.2022 The land which became the Angas Home for the Deaf (Shepherdson Road, Parafield Gardens) was donated by philanthropist John Howard Angas in 1898. The aim of the institution was to take care of deaf people who were incapacitated by age or for any other reason could not earn a living. It was administered by the South Australian Deaf Society. Several buildings were constructed and opened in September 1899. One building was to house the manager A. G. H. Cox, and his family and the... others were for the residents, as well as farm buildings. In 1904 additions were made and later the Florence Thompson wing was built which had 30 separate rooms for residents. It was a working farm and had cattle, pigs, horses, sheep and poultry. They also grew wheat, lucerne and vegetables allowing them to be self-sufficient. By 1979 it was considered uneconomical and was sold to the South Australian Housing Trust. Interesting fact Mr Cox was the manager for 47 years, his wife was the matron for 34 years and his daughter held that position after her mother for 28 years. This gives a total of 109 years of service by one family!! Manager's House #ThrowbackThursday

Mayor Gillian Aldridge visited Carol and her proud sister, Sandra, at Goodfield Road to present a plaque recognising Carol’s amazing green thumb and commitment to the cause, even in the face of health issues.

09.01.2022 The Adelaide Planetarium is fortunate to have a Huckitta meteorite, which is a rare type of metallic meteorite called a pallasite - one of only 95 in the world. It was recovered in 1937 from a cattle station in the Northern Territory where it was used as a mustering point and known as The Black Rock. The meteorite is 4.5 billion-years-old. While at the Planetarium you can also experience the unique opportunity to stargaze without having to brave the elements. Journey acro...ss the universe and marvel at projections of the sun, moon, planets and about 5000 stars in the Planetarium’s iconic dome-shaped artificial night sky, without leaving the comfort of your seat. There is also a range of movies on offer from those aimed at kids to advanced astronomy and everything in between. #WorldSpaceWeek #SatellitesImproveLife

05.01.2022 Every year Council provides treatments to combat mosquitoes at hotspots including Globe Derby Park, St Kilda, Greenfields and Mawson Lakes. But with summer forecast to be a bad mozzie season, it is important we all take steps to fight the bite.

05.01.2022 Spring is when people start to notice mosquitoes have become active again, and this year’s wet Spring will provide for ideal mosquito breeding conditions. This does not mean there is a cause for concern, but it pays to remain vigilant. Mosquitoes can never be entirely eradicated, and while the City of Salisbury is committed to checking and treating common breeding grounds on public land, different species breed in different areas and all sorts of water bodies so it is important that you protect yourself from mosquitoes by covering up, using repellent and eliminating local breeding.

04.01.2022 There is loads going on at Pooraka Farm Community Centre.

04.01.2022 As the weather warms up, there will inevitably start being more and more snake sightings. In Salisbury we are extremely lucky to have a multitude of parks and reserves on our door step. The local reserves are beautiful and to be enjoyed, but it is also important to be aware of snakes in these areas. Useful tips: Please be wary when you are out and about and make sure your children are aware that there may be snakes around. ... Keep your dog on a leash if you are walking it through a park or reserve. If you find a snake in your home or around your home leave it alone. If it is in the house, close all the doors and confine it to one room if possible. For help removing snakes, look under snake in the Yellow Pages website www.yellowpages.com.au to arrange for it to be removed safely. Do not try to catch it yourself! If you see a snake in one of our Council playgrounds or on a footpath, please report it to us on 8406 8222 immediately. If you are bitten by a snake please call 000 immediately for medical assistance.
