25.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS - PINJAR SHOOTING COMPLEX 600 METRES - 6 JUNE 2020 The almost perfect conditions that prevailed all day Saturday enticed 40 plus shooters keen to test their skills, it was disappointing that only 12 Subi Hot Shots turned up to try their luck at what was once one of the most difficult distances of all .... However experienced Subiaco marksman Peter W was up to the challenge going on to achieve the rare Double Possible scoring 100.8, last weeks champ Neil H must have missed a rare hole in the light wind to twice miss the Bullseye resulting in a total of 98.12, Dave H, who is gaining some consistency was third on 98.7. Ex Karratha Club Member Chris E made 116.6 out of 120 just pipping Our President Neil C, by one point then came Tony W, just back from a short lay off scoring 112. Anna W spent most of the afternoon running in her new barrel, we hope it does the trick Anna. 25.01.2022 As a pipe opener to the City of Subiaco Championships Subiaco Hot Shots competed over 700 Metres on Saturday the 14th November 2020. Weather was nigh on perfect for competition, just a slight misty rain at the end of day. In F Standard Tony W was top with 116.7 Chris A next with 111.2.... TR Colin D showing some consistent form scoring a good 98.6 just behind was Allen D 97.8. Visitor Kendrick R set up for TR (aided with rest) shows constant improvement with an impressive 89.5. 25.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS - PINJAR SHOOTING COMPLEX 500 METRES - 31 OCTOBER 2020 Thankfully a little cooler than Friday, conditions were ideal on Saturday with a 10KPH sea breeze in evidence it was pleasing to see 20 Hot Shots ready to go shooting!... Because of the unusually benign conditions it was no surprise to see some good scores. Again leading the pack in Target Rifle , Neil H top scored with a fine 99.12, not far behind Colin D registered 99.7, the now consistent Warren Mc was third on 98.12. FS shooting an excellent 116.9 Anna W just pipped Spouse Tony who scored 116.6 . Chris A was third with 113.5. In Hunter class it was nice to see Kaden B having his first competitive shoot with his new rifle. He made 89.2 after a shaky start. Our visitor Kendrick was back again for another try at Target rifle aided by an adjustable rest and sling, for his first detail he scored an encouraging 41.1 In his second application he fired three shots with the rest and then bravely made the decision to discard the rest and fire four shots which resulted 3 X 55 until fatigue set in so we re Introduced the rest for the balance of his shoot which he finished strongly with an X making a total of 84.5 Kendrick is showing potential in this difficult form of the sport! 24.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS - PINJAR SHOOTING COMPLEX 300 METRES - 22 AUGUST 2020 The small threat of rain last Saturday came to nothing, in fact Shooters enjoyed near perfect conditions, Neil H fresh from winning both Geraldton and Wurgabup Prize Meetings put on another near perfect display to record 100.14 good enough to again be top of the range in Target Rifle. Peter W was a close second with 99.13.... Our President Neil C regained top spot in FS, 116.7, relegating his protégé Petrian B to second spot, Tony W was third. In FTR Anna W showing some good form with her new barrel put together a nice 117.12 We had four visitors this week, TR Michael G from Kambalda. 96.10 FS D. Geurtz. 24.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS - PINJAR - 4 OCTOBER 2020 800 METRES After the Queens Prize the tumult and the shouting has died!... Numbers were understandably down, some still celebrating some relaxing, some just licking their wounds . Only twelve Hot Shots taking the mound to battle with yet another Pinjar day made difficult by a very tricky sea breeze. It was nice to welcome Kendrick back after he had visited us with his group of friends just prior to the Queens Prize Meeting. This week we were able to give him some more attention so I decided to show him how to zero a rifle. So after an explanation as to what was needed we went off to the zero range, choosing to shoot Target Rifle he was set up with Merv’s .308 fitted with the Lyman Spotter Scope and scissor jack rest. After a couple of sighter shots, Kendrick started the zeroing process, quickly attaining a zero on the 800 metre line. With time to spare I offered him a shot with the Sako .223 fitted with iron sights in contrast to the telescope which he also enjoyed. After the rifles were cleared and put in the Subaru we then visited the firing point for some practical Marksmanship. Still using the rest and Merv’s .308 Jongman, Kendrick proceeded to score two Magpies for sighters ending with a creditable 39.1. Kendrick was chuffed! He will be back! Next Week the range is 700 metres and I guess more members returning . TR Brad W 95.6 Dave M 95.5 Ian F 95. 24.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS - PINJAR SHOOTING COMPLEX 500 METRES - 5 SEPTEMBER 2020 Subiaco managed to field 16 starters on what turned out to be a delightful day for target shooting. The wind from the left was reasonably steady needing between five and six degrees of correction. Neil C was top in F Standard, shooting a solid 117.5 just one point below top of Range D Lane (Bass Bellvue) Kevin F still using Club equipment was second 115.7. Anna W was first in FTR 116.7.... In Target Rifle Dave M 99.12 just managed to edge out Allen D and Neil H both on 99.11. Kerry S made 99.10. 24.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS - PINJAR - 300 METRES 7 DECEMBER 2019 With cooler weather predicted 16 Hot Shots attended the range looking forward to easier conditions than they had experienced over the last month or so.... Consequently scores across the board were improved. Allan D shot accurately to record a fine 99.7, easily topping the range and of course the Club Consistent Peter W was next, in FS Neil C starting to find his old form just shaded Chris A. 22.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS - PINJAR - 1 FEBRUARY 2020 300 METRES Because it was the first shoot for the year a large turnout was not anticipated, however 10 starters was a little disappointing. The start time for shooting in the summer months had been put back to 3.30pm, in the hope that we may avoid the hot weather to come. Most Subiaco members would have preferred a morning start, however we had to go with the majority. ... The conditions at 300 metres were to say the least demanding! Fresh from some good performances at Albany Peter W was our best shooter on the day followed by Ian F, 3rd was Chris D (top lady) Alan D, Merv C surprisingly in front of Betty C by 1 central bull! Field class shooters found conditions no less demanding, however handled extremely well By Chris A who was top in FS. Second place with an outstanding performance was put up by Maris B Father of young Petrian who was 3rd.( Dads do know a thing or two Peta ) Neil C was 4th slipping a bit after his solid performance at Albany. Club Scores - P Watkins 96.8; I Frehner 95.2; Chris Dods 94.10 : A Dods 93.5; M Concanen 87.3; B Concanen 87.2. FS: C Andrews 115.5; M Brits 114.10; P Brits 113.6; N Carver 112.3 Remember shooters that last Saturday was only a warm up next week is for real! Club Championship points to count! It is interesting to observe that two Clubs have decided to switch from the well proven (heavy) Kongsberg targets to the Silver Mountain targets which apparently are lighter, we will be interested to see how they go. East Perth were to test another target system however it seems that they weren’t ready? I hope you all enjoyed the break. Wishing you all good shooting for 2020. 22.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS - PINJAR SHOOTING COMPLEX 800 METRES - 21 NOVEMBER 2020 Shooting over almost a Kilometre shooters knew that it wouldn’t be a walk in the park. However the innocent looking sea breeze kept the Hot Shots on their toes, fluctuations of up to three degrees movement on the sights was the norm. Target rifle shooters found it hard to stay in the Bullseye, some found an occasional Birdy three, Betty C was one of those, however on her second detail she was to make a...mends with an amazing 48.3 after keeping her sighters which were inner fours, an astonished Warren Mc S shooting alongside Betty was heard to comment after that he had experienced great difficulty just keeping in the four ring while on his left she kept getting Bulls and V’s. David M was top with 94.6. FS Chris A was three points in front of President Neil C, FTR consistent Anna W shared top of range with 111.2 H Class. Visitor Scott D handled conditions as good as more experienced shooters (there maybe something in that 6.5 mm Kreegmore?) Our other new visitor Thomas R must have had problems in his first shoot only making 31. However conditions were really tough for new shooters. Merv C continues to have problems accumulating a score, coupled with poor sighting and erratic grouping he is seeking solutions so that he can continue in the sport he loves. 21.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS - PINJAR SHOOTING COMPLEX 300 METRES - 4 JULY 2020 Ideal conditions were on tap at Pinjar last Saturday when Target Shooters fronted up for the Popular 300 metre range giving them an ideal opportunity to check their rifle‘s wind and elevation Zero’s. Those to take advantage were Peter W scoring 100.7 ( Century Cup) turning the tables on rival Neil H who at first appeared to have an edge on Central bulls eyes until he surprisingly missed the Bull scoring an i...nner four. His total ending on 99.14 ! Third with 99.10 was the consistent David M. Murray C who has been absent for some time had his best shoot since he reverted to F class, his score of 113 .10 was top of Subi, Tony W was second with 113.2. 20.01.2022 Hello to all of our Hot Shots, its been a long time doing nothing! With Anzac day imminent I felt it fitting to write something pertinent. For the following I take the liberty of using an item lifted from a publication Rifle Shooting in Western Australia 1863-1910. written by David Birkebeck (South Perth Rifle Club) some years ago. It goes on to explain the History of the Memorial plaque fixed to a Marble Monument originally situated at The Swanbourne Rifle Range. With the ...closure of Swanbourne it was thought fitting that it be re-located to the Pinjar Rifle Range, now the WARA Headquarters. Because the History inscribed on the Plaque contained some significance to the Rifle Shooting Movement (and of course the ANZACS ) I thought it fitting to repeat the story here . The Bronze plaque displays the names of Members of the Cottesloe Golf Club who joined up presumably on or before 1914 (I would make an assumption that that a percentage of those inscribed would have been Members of a Civilian Rifle Club?) David goes on to say that 16 percent of those named on the plaque were Killed in Action in the Great War be it at Gallipoli or the European Campaign. Further information goes on to relate that Rifle Club Membership in 1917 swelled to 12,000 Members. One other item of significance stands out, from The Lion Mill Rifle Club came Lawrence McCarthy, who was initially rejected on medical grounds but managed to enlist after taking his rifle Shooting trophies to the recruiting Office, he was to serve at Gallipoli and went on to win The Victoria Cross! Anzac Day tomorrow, the 25th. Lest we Forget The Scribe
20.01.2022 CITY OF SUBIACO RIFLE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS The 42nd City of Subiaco Rifle Club Championships were conducted at the Pinjar Shooting Complex on Sunday the 15th November 2020. This year’s competition could be considered one of the most successful since the Championships were inaugurated in 1979. 57 competitors were present when Club President Neil Carver opened proceedings with some customary remarks before handing over to the Chief Range officer John Harding.... In ideal conditions the eager competitors commenced to fire over the 400 metre range. The early high scoring foresaw a hotly contested competition, however there was a long way to go as there were 5 x 10 shot ranges to complete. Conditions remained ideal all day making for a fair competition for all competitors. At the final 700 metre Range there were at least 5 shooters in Target Rifle and similar numbers in the four other categories in with a chance. However when the last shots were fired experience was to count when Veteran Albany Shooter David Felton fired a possible 50 for an aggregate of 247.21 to take the Heather Henderson Cup from 2nd placed Shooter Steve Sakich from Mundaring by the narrowest of margins scoring 246.25 with an unlucky Ian Syme from Dalwallinu running third on 246.23. Pre Championship favourite Neil Hughes came home a close fourth with 245.25. In division two Subiaco’s Brad Whisson was the winner on 241.13, Dave Hicks second 237.23, Ian Frehner 235.23 was third. The Range preparation, stats and catering, were all carried out by the City of Subiaco Members to their usual very high standard which was appreciated by all those who participated. A fitting finish to the occasion was when President Neil presented our Vice Patron Heather Henderson with the Honorary Life Membership including a Certificate and Medallion, of course Heather responded in her usually gracious manner followed by applause from an appreciative crowd . 20.01.2022 Congratulations to the Subi club on its achievements over the Queens 8 days of shooting! Special mention to Dave M on his multiple prize winning achievements. Well done QS! We started our account with the team shoots by winning the DRA Teams -team members: Neil H, Dave M, Kerry S & Neil T.... We also won the team shoot for the 700m & 800m Aggregate Teams -team members: Allan D, Colin D ,Dave M & Kerry S. (See photo for details) Our club was well represented doing range work but none as much as the dynamic duo Allan & Chris who were still working well into the afternoon on Tuesday doing the clean up. Nothing but praise for the effort of the Pinjar Foodies, Steve, Gillian and their crew Marge, Roxy and the other volunteers in the kitchen. High praise was expressed by many of the interstate visitors on the standard of meals over the whole week. So a very well done to the Subiaco Club on multiple fronts including Range officer, Dave. Thanks also to those who volunteered at such short notice this week to assist with bringing in the targets even though it did come at a cost Neil stirred up the bees nest & paid the price injured in the line of duty!! 20.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS - PINJAR SHOOTING COMPLEX 900 METRES - 19 SEPTEMBER 2020 The daunting 900 Metres plus the Weather forecast did little to attract Members last Saturday.... However eight brave souls plus two visitors braved the elements! Recently crowned Club Champion Peter W was top of the range with a hard won 95.3 followed by Ian F 94.5. F Class shooters were not immune to the almost gale like conditions. Wind correction reached as much as 15deg left at the max Chris A was Subi's top in FS recording 92.3. Our Club welcomed a promising newcomer Primero, who was exited to try long range shooting certainly got his wish on the hardest of days, Coached by Kevin F and shooting F Standard Primero made 77.1 .1 ahead of his coach. He seemed to have enjoyed the experience. We would love to see him back. 19.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS CHRISTMAS BREAK UP 14 DECEMBER - PINJAR Shooting was scheduled for Saturday, however due to the exceedingly warm temperatures a total fire ban was in place, which means no shooting. However there were some desperados (wont say who ) who were very disappointed that they couldn’t practice their favourite sport. ... Because shooting was cancelled there were many who left their arrival for the break up party later in the afternoon. Once again the Pinjar Foodies provided an abundance of excellent fare, which was enjoyed by the good crowd in attendance. The bar service provided by Trevor was also much appreciated, as was our air conditioned social room. We also must give thanks to the many helpers who worked to make the night possible. 19.01.2022 HOT SHOTS - PINJAR SHOOTING COMPLEX 800 METRES - 8 AUGUST 2020 Shooters were relieved when the weather forecast predicted no rain for Saturday’s competition.... However the stiff breeze from the North East should have sounded a warning. Early shooters found the Bullseye with about six degrees of right wind correction on their sights, not much you might say however the strength was tempered by a 45 degree of direction angle, every variation in wind direction signaled danger, first down Peter W shooting Target rifle scored what seemed an unlikely possible 50, however none of the following shooters came close until seasoned Lady shooter Christine D came close unluckily dropping her last shot for a good 49.6. In F class Petrian B top scored for the second week in a row showing the way to his more Senior club mates with 106.2. We again welcomed Michael G from Kambalda who was again one of the leading shooters. We offer congratulations to Hot Shot Neil H who won the North West Districts Prize Meeting narrowly beating Michael G from Kambalda. Subi Hot Shots Peter W was 3rd. 19.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOT NEIL HUGHES BECOMES THE FIRST WA SHOOTER TO WIN THE QUEENS PRIZE AT PINJAR Subiaco Hot Shots at the Queens Prize competed at the Pinjar range 25th-28th September 2020.... Members of the Subiaco Rifle Club were to feature prominently in The Duke of Edinburgh and Queens Prize competition conducted on the Queens Birthday Long Weekend . Subiaco Rifle Club had strong representation with fourteen Members competing in the various Categories. The highlight came when Subiaco Rifle Club Member Neil Hughes took out the number one Queens Badge after a tense final range at 900 Metres. Starting a point behind Andy Ozolnieks from Mundaring Rifle Club, the pair went shot for shot, Hughes dramatically taking the lead when Ozolnieks missed a wind change registering a magpie 3, this cost him the lead and ultimately the Prize! Hughes running out winner by one point. Ian Syme from Dalwallinu finished strongly with a magnificent possible 75.6 to run 3rd. Neil Hughes went on to complete the Duke Queens Double when he carried off the Grand Aggregate 837.82. Other Hot Shots to do well were Warren McShane winning Division 2. Our Subiaco Club team shot well to win the Frank Simper Shield, the team members were David Martin, Neil Hughes, Warren McShane and Peter Watkins. Commiserations to Colin Dods who after winning one of the lead up matches with a magnificent 50.8 unfortunately grazed his arm when shifting targets and was forced to retire, bad luck Col! 18.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS - PINJAR - SATURDAY 30 MAY 2020 Hooray! We were able to begin shooting at last on Saturday morning despite the threat of some showers. Subi had opted for the morning session sharing the range with seven other Members who I believe were from Bass\Bellvue and Perth Fremantle Rifle Clubs. Shooting was held up briefly when showers showed up on the Radar however given the all clear by our Range officer away we went. Neil H not missing a beat top scored with... a solid 100.5. I am constantly amazed by the consistency of this fine marksman! Peter W was next scoring 99.9. Colin D opened with great 50.7 however he was to falter, dropping two points having to be satisfied with a creditable 98.11. Christine D was top Lady not far behind the male shooters with a solid 97.9 Betty C, who hadn’t used her old Omarc for some months decided to give Barry’s rifle a rest however unsure of her old rifles zero she had a shaky start resulting in a poor 37 out of 50. Merv C reverting to the .223 with iron sights sensed an opportunity to grasp a rare lead however he made hard going catching her scratching up a mean 40.0 Our Senior Vice Captain Brad W busied himself running in his newly fitted .223 stainless barrel, then to test the rifles accuracy he reverted to using a fixed rest, classed in FS he was pleased with the resulting 115 .5. 18.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS PINJAR SHOOTING COMPLEX 800 METRES - 20 JUNE 2020 We all appreciated the beautiful day which also resulted in mild conditions.... It was nice to welcome our Rifle Shooting Doctor Siva S and his work colleague Toby N who shot as a visitor. Siva who has not had shoot for some months surprised with a well put together a pair of 47’s resulting in a total of 94.8. Toby shooting off the rest did well to make 68.3 equalling the score of our oldest veteran! Peter W again showed the way with 97.9 Dave M close behind with 95.7. Tony W still finding his feet after his long lay off topped the F Standard group with 107.4. Having drawn Range Duty for the day meant we had to have all members contribute to the Days operation. As Captain I was very proud of the way every member present lent support to ensure that the Range operation ran smoothly, efficiently led by senior Vice Captain Brad, it’s good to know that despite limited numbers we got the job done. Our very efficient Treasurer Anna has now run in her new barrel and is eager to give it a try, she will probably wait until short range starts in a fortnight? 18.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS - PINJAR SHOOTING COMPLEX 400 METRES - 24 OCTOBER 2020 Last Saturday 17 Subiaco and three keen visitor shooters were given a taste of Summer as the temperature moved toward the forecast 34 degrees. With no breeze to move them on, the Bush flies were in abundance. With a 5 to 10 Kilometre breeze from the East, conditions were reasonably readable, that is until a very slight hint of a Sea breeze tried to oppose the Easterly. Sadly that never ha...ppened so temperature started to rise toward the predicted 34. The wind hovered around zero, little changes catching the unwary. This Years Queens Prize Winner Neil H continues to show us that he is one of the few that is working out the vagaries of Pinjar, posting a magnificent top of the range 99 .8 besting his closest rival Clubmate the consistent David M. F Class shooters found the going just as hard Subi’s best being Chris A making a lowly 104.3 Anna W shooting in FTR was good with her 110.8. 17.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS - PINJAR SHOOTING COMPLEX 21 MARCH 2020 400 METRES Keeping in mind the dire warnings laid out by our Government regarding COVID-19, the Subiaco Hot Shots took extra care in carrying out the latest rules laid out by the relevant authorities. ... Because we were the only Pinjar Club to shoot last Saturday it seemed natural that there would be some strays wanting a shoot. Allowing for this the Club set up 4 targets. As it turned out we accommodated 24 Enthusiastic Rifle persons. Conditions were again ideal approx 32 degrees on the mound, also a gentle Easterly to keep our eyes on! Down first Brad W seemed about to score maximum points however it was not to be, perhaps a tricky wind shift, perhaps not, Brad was unlucky to lose his last. 15.01.2022 Well Hot Shots, what an anti climax! Fifteen keen Subiaco Marksmen and Women were all geared up to visit Pinjar Shooting Complex on Saturday for the first time in a long time. Rifles cleaned and sights set, Picnic lunches prepared, then late Friday evening the word came through complete fire ban which translates to no Shooting! The news made even worse when Saturday morning dawned, a beautiful Autumn day perfect for a days shooting out in the open, welcome relief af...ter weeks of being cooped up, all because of the Covid-19 Isolation rules. The MDRA (Metro Association) and Member Clubs had gone to a lot of planning to abide by the isolation rules, scheduling two sessions spreading shooters out over two sessions to avoid groups mingling. However rules are rules . Why target rifle shooting is included in the fire ban regulations is a complete and utter mystery to me, fullbore rifles emit no fire or sparks on discharge and the chances of a fire being lit when a projectile strikes a rock would be a thousand to one chance, being made even more unlikely when ninety nine point nine percent of the shots fired at the targets go on to strike the specially designed stop butts (which are free of inflammable vegetation). At this point I would take the opportunity to enlighten the general public that the sport of Target rifle Shooting is almost completely self funded, also I hasten to add that our Members are a responsible law abiding group of enthusiasts who go about their pastime creating no trauma to Government or the General Public. I guess that that is enough for me until next week when with luck the impending rain will eliminate the chances of another complete fire ban? 15.01.2022 SUBIACO HOTSHOTS @ 900 METRES - SATURDAY 21 SEPTEMBER 2019 With the Queens Prize almost upon us (National F Class teams matches Monday 23\25 September) shooters at Pinjar had their final practice shoot at the difficult 900 Metres on Saturday, as usual conditions looked good, however it was not long after the first shooters had taken up their places on the mound that what appeared to be zero wind turned into a gentle direction change from the West. Last weeks top of the range... shooter Dave M fell immediately foul of the Pinjar Bogey battling to make sense of the wind direction fluctuating between 2 degrees left and 1 degree right translating to an up to 75mm (30inch) deflection of the projectile on it’s way to the target. 11.01.2022 SUBIACO SHOT SHOTS AT PINJAR SHOOTING COMPLEX - 900 METRES - SATURDAY 1 DECEMBER 2019 For me to suggest that the wind conditions on Saturday were brutal is no exaggeration! It is also extremely rare for shooters to have 12 degrees of right wind on their sights to find the bullseye (by my crude calculations) about 2.7 meters of bullet deflection! Of course any change in the wind be it by strength or direction again effected the position of where the bullet would strike on the ...target. The upshot of all this meant that all shooters suffered mediocre to poor results as indicated by the scores below. It appears that the forecast had an effect on the days attendance as we were to field only 15 shooters. Other clubs were similarly effected. Despite the foregoing grim scenario those who were there had a pleasant and very interesting afternoon. In Target Rifle Peter W showed experience and considerable skill by again being top of Subiaco AND the range with a score of 89.3 followed by Kerry S 80.1 Terry C 78.3 Chris D 78.1 Betty C 75 Colin D 73.4 Allen D 73 Dave M 72.2 Ian F 70.1 Merv C 67 In FS Neil C used his experience to top score for Subi with 96.4, second was Chris A 87 Hugh H 82 Kevin F 81 Petrian B 68 Quote of the week - "Things may not always be what they seem! 08.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS - PINJAR SHOOTING COMPLEX 900 METRES - 28 NOVEMBER 2020 Numbers were down for some of the Metro Clubs . Maybe an indication of Christmas fast approaching? Or is it that the 900 metre range at Pinjar is putting the fear of failure into some shooters, especially if an Easterly wind is predicted. However it didn’t seem to deter the Subiaco Hot Shots as numbers were hardly effected when twenty one shooters plus two visitors were willing to have a go.... As it turned out the anticipated Easterly never arrived however the welcome Sea breeze did manage to keep temperature down and it also helped to dislodge the bush flies. Conditions were a different matter and were about to create a repeat of what occurred last Saturday, of course ( if you hadn’t noticed) the same targets had been moved back one hundred metres! This magnified the effect of the wind by about 10%. Consequently scores were reduced by that measure, 42 out of 50 became commonplace, and any one cracking 85\100 could count themselves fortunate. Our regular visitor Michael Green who harks from Kambalda not surprisingly was top of the range scoring 90. 3 out of the possible 100.10. Our talented Junior Petrian B shaded all of his opposition making the only 100 In FS Class. Another pleasant surprise was the return of Raelene F now shooting in FS Class . 08.01.2022 On Monday the 30th of September, we were all privileged to witness one of the most amazing feats in the annals of target rifle shooting. Benalla (VIC) rifleman, James Corbett AGAIN proved that he is the MOST successful Rifleman in Australia’s history, in winning his 7th WA Queens Prize, and 7 Grand Aggregates, James assured his place in History by winning his 39th Queens Prize which includes Bisley (UK) the most coveted of them all! Why this doesn’t attract Australia wide attention by the Australian Press is beyond me. Perhaps it’s because we still suffer from the stigma of the impression that target shooting is a danger to public safety? Let the detractors explain that to me. Cheers Merv
08.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS - PINJAR SHOOTING COMPLEX - 23 NOVEMBER Fine weather prevailed estimated temperature at Pinjar was 32 degrees stabilised by a cooling breeze from the West. Unfortunately Merv C and Murray C for various reasons failed to complete the course.... 07.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS - PINJAR SHOOTING COMPLEX 800 METRES - 7 MARCH Shooting commenced promptly at 2.30pm in what appeared ideal conditions, a gentle sea breeze requiring about 5 degrees of left adjustment on the wind arm.... Peter W used his experience to put together a hard earned 97.8 followed by Christine D on the same target with a well thought out 97.3. In the meanwhile David H was confident getting down for his second application, starting with both sighters in, things were looking good, when Pinjar did what Pinjar does without warning an outer two appears on DH’s monitor utterly confused by what had happened Dave never recovered finishing with a 43.2 a total of 92.7 (never mind it can happen to any one). Betty C after a poor start rattled in a nice 47 putting pressure on Merv C who looking as though he may at last topple his partner, scores a bird for his second last shot to again be the Bridesmaid. Falling a point short! Our New Shooter Andy PA learnt that unlike Smallbore the wind can be a cruel master ! Even our F class shooters also found the going hard with Neil H top scoring for Subi, his score of 110.4 I am sure would have been below expectations . Chris A back in the West was second on 109.3. 07.01.2022 HOT SHOTS - PINJAR SHOOTING COMPLEX 700 METRES - 1 AUGUST 2020 Because a good number of our Shooters migrated North to shoot the North West Districts Prize Meeting this weekend, numbers at Pinjar were down, however those who chose to stay home were greeted by sublime conditions. One Hot Shot to take advantage of same was young Tyro Petrian, who shooting in F class recorded his personal best score, his 118.6 was top in Club besting his Mentor Neil by a point, Neil was just as ...chuffed as Petrian was! Top Target rifle shooter two weeks in a row Kerry S showed the way with 99.14, out of the bullseye only once. An outstanding performance by our visitor Andrew using his immaculate 1903 Mauser Service rifle with flip up peep sight scored an incredible 40.1. He and friend Michael enjoyed their visit under the eye of President Neil. Both were assisted by your Scribe to Zero their rifles with which they intend to compete in the newly introduced Hunter Class. 07.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS - PINJAR 500 METRES 15 FEBRUARY 2020 Target Rifle and F Class Shooters alike relished perfect conditions at the Pinjar International Shooting Complex last Saturday, even the annoying little wind fluctuations were surprisingly absent. Overcast conditions prevailed all day, a momentary light drizzle threatened at the start of shooting but stayed away for the competition.... Three Target Rifle shooters shared the honours Steve C Bass/Bellv, Peter W Subiaco and Neil T Perth/ Frem all on 100.13. Then Neil H 198.13, Chris D 97.9, Colin D 97.8, Dave H 96.10, Alan D 95.6, Betty C 95.4, new member Andy Pappa A (using his recently acquired Stock standard Omark) 93.8, Ian F 92.6, Terry C 89.6, Merv C (opt.class) 85.2. FS Chris A with an excellent 110.10, Neil C 112.5 and Petrian B 108.1. Prior to the start of shooting Subiaco held their AGM when long time member Merv Concanen (after a gap of 50 Years was again elected Captain! Brad W Senior Vice Captain, Ian F Secretary, Anna W Treasurer and David M as Handicapper. We still have concern over the ridiculous late starting time for shooting! Some of us not getting home until 7PM which is disastrous for any one wishing to attend any other functions. The consequence being the loss of members or at the least Shooters attending on Saturdays . Quote of the Week , If you're in a bad situation, don’t worry it will change . 05.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS - PINJAR SHOOTING COMPLEX 900 METRES - 28 NOVEMBER 2020 Numbers were down for some of the Metro Clubs . I was very pleased to see our visitor Kendrick R again shooting iron sighted target Rifle (sling and assisted by a scissors rest ) he achieved a score of 74.3. 05.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS PINJAR SHOOTING COMPLEX 700 METRES - 29 FEBRUARY The one hour earlier start on Saturday was appreciated by all, even so we lost half an hour due to teething troubles with a couple of the new electronic targets.... The conditions were pleasantly warm, tempered by a gentle breeze from the left requiring about 4 to 5 degrees of correction. Top on the day in TR was Sam A from Bassendean /Bellvue followed by Subiaco Hot Shot David H with 98.10 (inc Possible) Our Brand New Member Andy PA was second with a creditable 97.4. 05.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS - PINJAR - 600 METRES SATURDAY 16 NOVEMBER 2019 With the temperature soaring, only the bravest souls took to the mound, were they hero’s or not? At 1.30 pm your reporters car thermometer was registering 45 degrees!!! ... Subiaco Rifle Club only fielded 10 shooters, however that was 60% of the range total! With a healthy easterly blowing across the range conditions were tough as indicated by the lower than usual scores. In Target Rifle Ian F topped the Hot Shots with a hard won 95.7 followed by Peter W 93.7, Terry C 92.2, Dave M 96.4, Colin D 88.4. In F Standard Chris A following on from his last weeks prize meeting successes made 111.9, Neil C 1113, Hugh H 109 .3, Junior Petrian B 101.2, Murray C on the bi pod rest made 90, good to see him back. Your reporter and his loyal mate Betty, took the easy way out and enjoyed lunch in the air conditioned Club house. Next weeks forecast appears much more shooter friendly so we would expect a few more starters. Just a thought, would it be wise to cancel competition if temperatures are predicted above 40? Let us know what you think? Cheers Merv

05.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS - PINJAR SHOOTING COMPLEX 600 METRES - 7 NOVEMBER 2020 Good numbers showed up on Saturday to shoot over the 600 metre range. 05.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS - PINJAR 600 METRES - 22 FEBRUARY Shooters were again lucky to have reasonably temperate conditions accompanied by a light Easterly, however if we thought it was going to be easy Malcom was right again. Any Easterly breeze at Pinjar usually means watch out! Although only ever reading between 0 to a maximum of 4 degrees right, the variations kept all shooters on the alert, verified by the fact that the top Target Rifle shooter Neil H from Subiaco was top of ...the range with a well compiled 97.8 whilst top in F Class was Trevor F Bassendean/ Bellvue. It was great to see Anna W back on the mound shooting FTR her 107.3 was encouraging. 04.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS - PINJAR - 400 METRES 26 OCTOBER 2019 Warmer weather was on the menu for shooters arriving at Pinjar last Saturday. Subiaco had 18 keen participants including two visitors keen to try the intriguing sport of Rifle shooting. The forecast of 25 degrees with an afternoon sea breeze proved fairly accurate however by the time the Westerly made up it’s mind it was to create minor havoc among those who weren’t up to the task of picking the mirage changes!... Your reporter still doesn’t know what to blame for his miserable performances however as usual he stoically believes that something better is on the horizon, bravely saying, there is always next week. This weeks Top of the Range was Christine D making a miraculous recovery from recent surgery. It appears that their recent acquisition of an improved sighting aid may have made a difference in seeing the target? Last week’s champ Neil H made room choosing to attend the Prize meeting at Corrigin. Special mention must be made of a fine performance by first timer visitor Gerry D in FS finishing in front of a couple of more experienced shooters, Junior Petrian B is showing marked improvement to run second to Chris A who shot his first Possible 60 at Pinjar recording 111.7. 04.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS - 300 METRES PINJAR SHOOTING COMPLEX - 17 OCTOBER There were 15 Subi members and two visitors on the mound Saturday afternoon.... There was a light easterly to keep the temperature down and the flies away, conditions as is usual with a land breeze were apparent but manageable. Shooting F Class standard Chris A was top with 111.3 followed by Kevin F who is anxious to try his new Rifle and Night force scope managed 107.4 using Club gear. Jeffery D having difficulty with the Target Rifle format decided to try FS to see if it improved his fortunes? He managed 100.0, we will watch his progress with interest. Best Target Rifle was Kerry S, Warren Mc S and Colin D all with 97, Kerry being the top of the range with 97.10. Betty C was top Lady and for the first time narrowly finished in front of Christine D. Visitor Kendrick R having his 3rd shoot at the Target Rifle Discipline using a sling and rest, shot with a club rifle , unfortunately because of an inaccurate sight setting he was to lose his first three counting shots however he recovered well to he finish in the Bull’s eye. 04.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS @ PINJAR SHOOTING COMPLEX 600 METRES - 25 JULY 2020 Shooters arriving at the range last Saturday had no idea what they were going to be in for, problems were apparent from the start when Neil H got up with a 45.1 and Brad W fairing marginally better with 46.2. Kerry S who’s wide experience gained from Karratha saw him a narrow winner in Target Rifle.... The F Class shooters coped a little better with Kevin F top scoring with 103.2. I believe that 3 and 4 degrees of wind allowance were constantly necessary to stay in the bulls eye. Conditions like we had on Saturday I have only encountered at the notorious Pontville range in Tasmania! John W having his second go at F Class had an enlightening experience scoring 98.1 a moderate score which amazingly contained nothing lower than an inner four no cake walk this week John. 04.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS 600 METRES - 5 OCTOBER 2019 Saturday was a little quiet after the Queens, I guess some had need of a break after a heavy programme. We could only muster ten shooters . Allan and Christine D had a legitimate excuse as Chris was in Hospital recovering from an op. We wish you a speedy recovery. Well! Some Hot Shots had a good day, in fact Peter W had a great one, his score of 99.7 easily topped the range in Target Rifle, following was Dave M still holding the f...orm he had at the Queens 96.6 then Dave H 93.5, Colin C 89.5, Betty C 89.5 . Your loyal reporter Merv C insists that he had the worst conditions of the day fighting the flies and the impossible wind, finished with a lamentable 76.1. Chris A just back from Victoria after seeing his beloved Collingwood miss out on the Grand Final was top in F Standard with 112.4 then Neil C 111.3, Junior shooter Petria B must have gained some valuable experience shot a creditable 102.2 and new Member Jeff D 91.1.
03.01.2022 SUBI HOT SHOTS - PINJAR 900 METRES - 15 AUGUST 2020 Finding the Bullseye at 900 Metres on a quiet day is not that easy let alone when coping with a stiff 40K frontal fishtail. The most experienced shooters struggled to read the changes whilst trying to cope with the buffet. Scores plummeted in both classes restricting Subiaco’s Top Target rifle shooter Brad W to 81.1 (Range top was Garry W from Darling Range 83.5)... F Class Kevin F 94.1. Chris A 92.1, Neil C 88.0 and Junior Petrian B’s inexperience showed up when he slipped back to fourth after leading his more senior F classers for the last two weeks. 03.01.2022 The City Of Subiaco Rifle Club’s Annual Open Prize Meeting 9 November 2019 The organisers of the event were holding their respective breaths when a total fire ban was declared for Saturday. Whilst Rifle Shooting poses little risk of starting a fire our Association was obliged to obey the State authority’s edict! However the weather God was to decide that we would be granted a reprieve and the 40 degrees experienced on Saturday was down graded to a pleasant 28 for Sunday. The... fact that shooting was cancelled for Saturday probably acted in our favour as when Shooters started to arrive it appeared that we would exceed a hoped for 50 entries when in fact 54 shooters were to take the mound. As is usual for those who shoot first scores were good, however as the weather warmed up and the pleasant sea breeze strengthened some little annoying changes in strength and direction were to appear , this was to continue throughout the day. As is usual the more experienced Shooters with only one or two exceptions were to prevail. The winner in Target Rifle and number 1 Medal and Badge with a score of 243.24 was Subiaco's Neil Hughes who had come into this event carrying great form as my recent posts had indicated. A close Second on 242.25 was the consistent Michael Green all the way from Kambalda. Closely following in third Place was Steve Sakich with 241.18. 03.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS @ PINJAR SHOOTING COMPLEX 500 METRES - 18 JULY 2020 The hint of light rain did not deter 16 SubI members rolling up to shoot the popular 500 metre range, however light powdery rain did hold us up temporarily. Early shooters fired their sighting shots with about one and a half degrees of left wind on the sight, in the latter stages this diminished to zero until increasing rain necessitated a small increase of left adjustment.... These inconveniences did little to halt Neil H’s steady march toward yet another double possible. Michael G from Kambalda again graced us with his presence and continued to make light of the Pinjar challenge. Terry C appears to have at last sorted out his problems placing 2nd for the Hot Shots. Your reporter Merv C since acquiring a new clearing lense is now able to read the target numbers a little easier and has been able to revert back to using his iron sights, he was very enthusiastic until one of his shots unfortunately failed to register on the target, that and a sudden downpour quickly dampened his ardour! 02.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS - PINJAR SHOOTING COMPLEX 900 METRES 14 MARCH 2020 A confusing weather forecast plus the mixed messages regarding the Corona Virus may have effected the attendance at the range? As it turned out we needn’t have worried, the prediction of rain was almost a non event, however the forecast of an ESE, wind was spot on. Right wind for the early shooters was up to as much as 8 degrees. It was here that all predictions were superfluous. Even the most experienced ...were left shaking their heads. A few shooters managed to slide through the rare quiet gaps without major damage to their scores. This takes nothing away from Brad W 93.6 or Christine D 92.5, their shoots at this notorious range were outstanding. Days like Saturday can be discouraging for some, especially the young and new Shooters. Your Scribe, can from experience attest that a belting like some of us suffered on Saturday is what Long range Target shooting is all about, it hurts at the time but time cures all, the disappointment can always be erased with a good laugh afterwards. 02.01.2022 SUBIACO HOTSHOTS - 600 METRES PINJAR SHOOTING COMPLEX 12 SEPTEMBER 2020 Subiaco fielded 15 club shooters plus seven welcome visitors on what eventuated into to being a pleasant Spring Day. Unfortunately things turned out to be a little hectic as the MDRA were scheduled to hold their Annual Champion of Champions shoot off at 3.00pm, this made things a little tight. However we managed to make Kendrick, Hazel, Chrissy, Gregory and TJ welcome. Because of the circumstances we we...re only able to offer them a shortened programme of two sighters and five shots to count, all five shot F Class under the watchful eye of Neil and Kevin. John and Damien also visiting had a shoot in Hunter Class. From what I have heard it proved to be an interesting experience for all, in fact I think that it was the first time that Crissy and Hazel had ever been behind a rifle. I was pleased to hear that Kendrick their leader has shown an interest in trying Target Rifle . Meanwhile Club members are almost taking for granted the difficult wind conditions that the Pinjar Range regularly serves up. Those stalwarts that managed to make a reasonable showing were Colin D, Dave M, Peter W, Ian F and Betty C who was very exited to make the top ten (7th on range). 01.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS - PINJAR 400 METRES - 8 FEBRUARY 2020 Shooters enjoyed ideal weather for competition, wind allowance requiring approximately two degrees of left wind with some subtle variations to confuse the unwary. Marlin R who is a regular welcome visitor to Subiaco was top of the range in F Standard with an excellent score of 116.7 following Marlin was Junior Petrian B with 112.8 beating his more Senior club mates to be top of the list for Subiaco! Next was Chris E 10...5.3 followed by President Neil on 102.3. In Target Rifle Club Handicapper Dave M had an outstanding day easily topping the club and the range with 99.13. Not far behind was Peter W 98.10 then came Alan D 96.7, Chris D 95.9, Ian F 93.6, Dave H who has just returned from an extensive tour of the Eastern States obviously in need of practice 89.6. Bringing up the rear was yours truly, Merv C with 84.4. An important note for all Subiaco Members is that Subiaco Rifle Club is holding it’s AGM next Saturday 15th February at 1 PM sharp. There are some important items on the agenda so it is essential that all Members attend. Regards Your Scribe Quote of the week - Happiness depends upon ourselves. Aristotle
01.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS - PINJAR SHOOTING COMPLEX 900 METRES - 27 JUNE 2020 With several of our retirees headed North and very wet weather predicted, Subi's numbers were down, added to this Merv C and partner Betty were absent due to Merv having some medical repairs carried out at S.C.G.H. Happy to report that all went well and you can expect to see them back on the mound next week.... According to my trusty deputy Chris D, conditions were calm?? But damp! In F standard Tony W 112.5 just pipped Neil C 112.3. Target Rifle Neil H was again top of range with a good score of 98.9 a fair way back Peter W scored 92.9. Brad W would have been a little disappointed to finish with 90.6. Our very efficient Secretary Ian F made 88.2. With the return of short ranges next Saturday we would expect a better turnout, provided the weather stays kind? Quote of the Week - Target Rifle Shooting is a simple sport which is made to appear difficult by experts! - The Scribe
01.01.2022 SUBIACO HOT SHOTS - PINJAR 400 METRES - 11 JULY 2020 Shooters were lucky to again have a window of fine weather for their competition on Saturday. Those who turned up enjoyed some challenges to keep them on their toes!... We again had the pleasure of visitor Michael G all the way from Kambalda. Michael just pipped Neil H by one bullseye, Dave M just three centrals behind was third. Neil C was Subi’s top in F Class shooting a total of 114.4 Tony W was second with 112.3. FTR Anna W was first, counting out Neil ( shooting F class ) on centrals. The Historic 107 year old target rifle Club City of Subiaco invites any individuals male or female who has for whatever reason had to give up their more strenuous sport and still in need of good company and a brain stimulating mental challenge, target Rifle shooting could be the answer. Subiaco values its strong social culture and new Members are always welcome. Our new modern Shooting Complex situated at Pinjar and just forty minutes North of Perth could be argued to be the finest target rifle range in the Southern Hemisphere.
