09.01.2022 STAYING WATERWISE The City of Wanneroo has been recognised by Water Corporation as a Gold Waterwise council. Water is an increasingly scarce resource, with rainfall and dam inflow declining significantly since the 1970s. This has coincided with the growth of Perth's urban footprint, including in the City of Wanneroo.... To manage ground water for irrigation in our north coast corridor, the City and the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation developed the North West Water Supply Strategy. The Strategy supports urban communities to minimise water use on non-active spaces such as verges and streetscapes, maximising water use on turfed areas needed for sport and recreation. Under the Strategy, irrigation to garden beds and streetscapes are switched off once areas are handed over by developers to the City. This allows the City to comply with its annual Ground Water Licence allocations. Prior to handover, developers have an extended ground water allocation to water these areas, which are planted with waterwise plants and trees through the establishment period. Towards the end of the establishment period and prior to handover to the City, developers are required to reduce the irrigation to these areas to ‘harden’ vegetation, prior to irrigation being switched off. The Strategy is part of our commitment to conserving water for our community now and for future generations. For more information on the North West Water Supply Strategy please visit: https://bit.ly/2LNpm5Q
