20.01.2022 Dear friends of City Yoga, In compliance with guidelines published by the Australian government on Monday, I’m suspending my classes for the foreseeable future. It’s unfortunate that it has come to this, but I urge you all to look at this situation as a blessing in disguise. Some of you have been studying yoga for quite some time now; others not so long. But in all of you there is a seed which can be nurtured and made to flourish not in spite of, but because of the difficul...ties we must now endure. It is easy to turn up to a yoga class and unreflectively follow instructions. But that isn’t Yoga. A guide can only show the way. The real journey follows an inward path, and that path must always be taken alone. So trust in your judgement. Have faith that you have learned enough to serve you in the coming few weeks. And resolve to maintain the discipline to practise. I know some of you feel like you lack that discipline. All it takes is setting aside a little time and sitting on your mat. Even if that is all you do. You may surprise yourself that doing just that much provides the necessary momentum to keep going. Do not be excessive, but aim to be consistent. Not only will it support your immune system at a time when you most need it, but it will also help to keep you calm and focused. Above all, be reflective, not mechanical, and you will find that new doors will open for you. If you get stuck, or don’t understand some part of the practice or another, don’t be afraid to drop me a line. I will get back to you (much faster than my usual rate of reply, I promise!) Or investigate; study; do a little research on your own. I will let you know as soon as I am able to reinstate some classes. In the mean time, be well, stay safe and sane, and good luck! My very best wishes to you all, Peter Ujvari Director City Yoga cityoga.com.au

19.01.2022 Systematic ways of cultivating the HARA, TANDEN and the 'internal body' were are as common in Japan as they still are in China until the last world war when the...y were largely lost or rejected. I was very fortunate that my teachers in Japan were enthusiastic practitioners who stressed that martial arts training without these practices will never attain depth or longevity. Western methods of core training as yet have only scratched the surface of the power inherent in the abdominal centre. See more

10.01.2022 Some good advice for the winter months:

08.01.2022 ‘The second well known dance of Siva is called the Tandava, and belongs to his tamasic aspect as Bhairava or Virabhadra. It is performed in cemeteries and burni...ng grounds, where Siva, usually in ten-armed form, dances wildly with Devi accompanied by troops of capering imps. Representations of this dance are common amongst ancient sculptures, as at Elura, Elephanta, and also Bhuvanesvara. The Tandava dance is in origin that of a pre-Aryan divinity, half-god, half-demon, who holds his midnight revels in the burning ground. In later times, this dance in the cremation ground, sometimes of Siva, sometimes of Devi, is interpreted in Saiva and Sakta literature in a most touching and profound sense.’ quoted from Ananda Coomaraswamy (the dance of shiva) #yoga #nrttasadhana #karana #angahara #nrtta #hathayoga #tantra #dance #danceofbliss #shiva

07.01.2022 MORNING INTENSIVE Monday 2 December until Friday 6 December, 6 am - 8 am, at The Australian Shiatsu College, 103 Evans St, Brunswick. The term Angahara refers to the sequential arrangement of bodily shapes within the practice format. Traditionally, Yoga has been practised at the four cardinal points of the day sunrise, sunset, midday, and midnight with different arrangements appropriate for each time. In the mornings, the body’s energy is in the nerves and extremities an...d must be brought back to the blood by means of the linear (or solar) arrangement of stances and their corresponding seats. Over the week, we will cover the Angahara I linear format, which is ideally suited for morning practice, as well as the internal work which forms the foundation of the more advanced stages of Yoga. The cost for this course is $180. For contact details and bookings, please visit cityoga.com.au

04.01.2022 The Chalanas The term chalana means to turn, or more precisely, to churn. In the context of the exercises given below, it refers to the circular movements of the joints and limbs which prepare one for the practice of Yoga or the martial, internal, or performing arts. The Chalanas can also be used on their own. Consistent practice promotes joint mobility and the free flow of energy (vayu) in the subtle channels (nadis).... Used as preparation for Yoga, the Chalanas constitute the starting point for the average beginner. The movements should be smooth and rhythmic, neither too fast nor too slow, and without excessive force or pressure. Care should be taken to perform them in the order given. About eight repetitions of each movement is a good beginning, but this may be increased over the course of time under the guidence of a qualified teacher.
