23.01.2022 Today I participated in a seminar on the topic of managing conflict with problematic personalities hosted by Redefining Conflict. As many of you know I have a special interest in what makes people tick, the why's and the science behind human behaviour and personality and am always pleased to have the opportunity to hear others perspectives and views on this vast subject. Thank you, Belinda Lynch, for your insight and strategies for dealing with conflict. Here is a little bit...Continue reading

22.01.2022 I've written another essay, this time it is about weeds, but it is really about the exploration of perspective. I attempt to shine a light into potential questions we might ask ourselves in order to examine one of life's more complex enigma's, what it is that makes someone take the perspective they have? How can we understand others by understanding their roots and what have weeds got to do with it? I hope you find it brings you to a place that requires consideration and depth of thought and maybe even helps you to understand how important knowing the answers to the questions I pose are to your own life. Follow the link to the essay here. https://cityphysiotherapy.com.au/what-can-weeds-teach-us-a/

21.01.2022 Uni Qld Course Completed: Think 101X The Science of Everyday Thinking; How to think better, argue better and choose better. Do you think about the process of thinking? Do you think about how you have come to the conclusions you have? The views that you take? How you react? What information you allow in and what you selectively filter out? Do you consider biases you have that can impact on your thinking and decision making? Do you know what all the biases are that can impact ...on your thinking? In the course the science of everyday thinking, I covered topics such as the exploration of the psychology of our everyday thinking: why people believe truly weird things, how we form and change our opinions, why our expectations skew our judgments, and how we can make better decisions. Learning about thinking and spending time thinking about how and why we think the way we do will change the way in which you think. In order to change, we have to change the way we approach it, the way we think about it. Reliance on slow, effortful, deliberative, analytic, and logical thinking rather than fast, automatic, instinctive, emotional, and stereotypical thinking. This course teaches you to use the scientific method to evaluate claims, make sense of evidence, and understand why humans so often make the most irrational of choices. See the world, understand how you think, and how you argue and if and how you take into consideration other people's arguments or perspectives. If you think learning about these things is not necessary or important for you, that you have this covered, you already do this, then you most probably need to think again. The more we learn the more we know and the more we know the more we understand that we have much more to learn. https://www.edx.org/course/the-science-of-everyday-thinking

19.01.2022 We all need a little kindness from time to time. Being kind is about intentionally showing up for someone else. Kindness as an active gift that requires strength of character and true empathy in offering support to help others regain their own strength, despite their weaknesses or obstacles in their way. At City Physiotherapy we aren't just here to "fix you", we are here to listen to your story so that we can help you overcome your difficulties with the support and kindness you deserve.

14.01.2022 Brain-Boosting Foods - Choose wisely and give your brain the fuel it needs to get on with living your best life.

14.01.2022 Those of you who know me know I do go on about stretching with regularity and with diversity. Sustaining a particular position or only moving in particular ways, in life, in the gym, on the running track, on the sports field or at home only ends up with us becoming limited, stiff and tight. It can also lead to weakness of certain muscles and pain, immobility and potentially degenerative changes in your joints. None of that is good news. Your body was designed to move and en...gage with the world so why do we make excuses all the time? We like to do squats or bench press so we only do squats and bench press. We sit all day so it's more comfortable to sit when we get home. Well, these things are all fine but only until they aren't fine. Sound familiar? I'm not saying that strength or endurance capacity or not important, they certainly are also important to us being healthy. It should make perfect sense that if the human body was born with the design to move then there is a good reason for that. Your connective tissue, otherwise known as fascia, needs mobility and fluidity so that it can do its job of supporting your joints as you go about moving in a range of ways you want to, need to and were born to be able to do. If you go about your day, or your life, in restricted mode, then all you will end up getting is more restricted as time passes. There is no good news when we never stretch our bodies, read more about the reasons why here: https://www.wellandgood.com/what-happens-if-you-dont-stre/

10.01.2022 Being Angry is a normal human emotion but did you know that staying angry can change your brain? Anger produces a chemical in our brain as a response to stress. This chemical makes some brain cells die and this results in changes to how we process information to make good judgements, decisions and future planning. High levels of the stress chemical cortisol also affects our brains ability to form new memories accurately and can also often result in short term memory loss. So ...the next time you get angry, ask yourself is it worth staying angry over? Is this in my control to change? If so, try and distance yourself from the emotion of anger by calming down your nervous system. This can look like many things from walking away, taking time to process rationally, deep breathing, mindfulness, asking others for advice and trying to gather information from a wider perspective, not just from people or places that will support your biases and viewpoints alone. Do it for yourself and do it for your brain health. See more

01.01.2022 Things will happen - that is the nature of life. Some things we can control and some we cannot. What we can choose though is which emotion we attach to the things that happen and for how long we choose to hold onto that emotion. So yes even on crappy days when you aren't feeling at your best you can choose to react differently and in doing so to lift your spirits by viewing things as they are rather than being ruled by emotion; or you could come to physio and that will also make you happier
