23.01.2022 Have you had your say on the proposed design for a community centre for Haig Park yet? Feedback closes this Thursday. We'd love to know your thoughts to help shape this community facility. https://www.yoursay.act.gov.au/haigpark/community-centre
23.01.2022 How might our Civic and Cultural Precinct (located around Civic Square and the Canberra Theatre) use adaptive re-use principles to create resilient, sustainable and adaptive places? Is it possible to remain sensitive to their design beginnings but become fit for purpose for years to come? You’re invited to hear designers and thought leaders tackle these very questions at the upcoming DESIGN Canberra Two Minutes to Midnight event. City Renewal Authority Board member, Kate Brennan will host the event to explore and identify future solutions for the area.
22.01.2022 Despite the challenges 2020 has thrown up so far, the heart of the city is still beating strong. Some things have changed, including massive efforts to clean and improve the shared places, and we are encouraging all Canberrans to rediscover what they love about the city - its friendly people, its impressive range of businesses and its beautiful places.
21.01.2022 Prepping for tomorrow's Great Day, Great Place event! Tomorrow, come to City Walk and Petrie Plaza to see artists Dale Huddleston, Julia Fulop and Yianni Pounartzis work with community groups to create ground murals that respond to the theme of 'care.' They’ll be painting all day so you can see the artworks come to life for yourself!
21.01.2022 ReNewYou is back for 2020! We will kick-start with Zumba by Kokoloco Dance Studio during September in Garema Place! ReNewYou is a trial program of weekly, free healthy activity classes to encourage people to get out and enjoy their city centre. The activities in the program, like Zumba, yoga or boot camp, change regularly to provide a variety of opportunities for people to get active in the city’s great public spaces. As well as helping make our community healthier, the... program also adds to the activity and rejuvenation of the city centre. Bookings are required so we can ensure appropriate physical distancing. 21.01.2022 Introducing our Great Place Guide to placemaking, aimed to help those who want to be involved in Canberra’s renewal take a best practice approach to making great places! The Great Place Guide acknowledges that while government has a significant role in renewal, everybody has a role to play, from businesses, community groups and developers to architects, designers, planners, entertainers, artists and any member of the community. Check it out on our website: bit.ly/greatplaceguide
19.01.2022 Our chief executive Malcolm Snow led the renewal of Brisbane's South Bank for nearly seven years. Now, he is in charge of leading the renewal of Canberra's Acton Waterfront. Read more about his experiences and what he believes will be the critical success factors for the Acton Waterfront. Read the article here: https://bit.ly/nurturingpublicspace
19.01.2022 It’s so much about feeling a real connection, when you have been coming here for so long... I’ve been coming to Braddon now for 22 years, since I first started working for Nexus, and I have seen it change so much. I love it, it’s got a lot more modern feel now. I love the accessibility. For Lisa McPherson of Nexus Human Services it’s all about connecting with people, and connecting other people with the best jobs for them. Because her team at Nexus provides employment ser...vices to people who have a disability or mental health condition. How do you connect with the people in your city? https://bit.ly/rediscoveryourcity

No, we are not barking mad, nor are we spinning you a tail. 17.01.2022 We are wheeling in the blossoms this Floriade! 120 bright orange wheelbarrows have been distributed to local businesses throughout Braddon and Civic to brighten up the footpaths. The wheelbarrows are full of daffodils, tulips and annuals that will grow and bloom during Floriade. Help us fill our page with images of beautiful flowers by sharing your local wheelbarrow photos below!
17.01.2022 We’re delighted to see the City Renewal Canberra ‘Heart + Soul: rediscover your city centre’ campaign featured in Mumbrella this week! Developed and launched in August with the support of Threesides Marketing Canberra, this campaign encourages Canberrans to get out and rediscover their city - to visit the places they know and love and be open to exploring and finding new places and reconnecting with people. The campaign features local business ‘heroes’, familiar faces that members of the Canberra community will identify and connect with. We’re looking forward to continuing to roll out the ‘Heart + Soul: rediscover your city centre’ to support local businesses and revitalise our beautiful city.
15.01.2022 The city is such a vibrant place. It’s close to other businesses, there is movement, activity, a brightness about it. There’s always some new furniture around town. It’s always changing, like a canvas that’s being painted ongoingly, it’s good to see it build and see it grow. It’s something to be proud of. Nesh Nikolic chose to set up the new offices of Strategic Psychology in the heart of the city. He wanted to design the city space from the ground up to give a really fantastic experience for both clients and staff to enjoy. He says he is proud of the practice which is comfortable, welcoming, warm and provides a confidential space to support Canberras in their mental health. How do you connect with our city and our people?
15.01.2022 You have everything at your fingertips in the city. There’s good coffee next door from our cousin Joseph’s coffee shop where there is always a crowd out the front, there’s great spots for breakfast, the location is so good with parking. We have the flexibility to go out for a drink on a Friday. It’s a very easy location for our clients. We have a lot of clients that work in the city that love being able to pop in to the salon in their lunch breaks. We love that our clients... find it so accessible. It’s really nice. You feel part of the city, it’s where you want to be. Michael and Claudia Cataldo have been part of the city’s fabric for all of their lives as the third generation in family-owned hairdressing business Cataldo's Salon. Their strong family ties are reflected in the bonds they make with their own team and the people of Canberra's city. Which Canberra business makes you feel like part of the family?
14.01.2022 The COVID-19 pandemic provides a stark reminder of the importance of community and why we must nurture it. As planners and designers we devote plenty of attention to making our cities more environmentally sustainable, but surprisingly less time understanding what makes a socially sustainable city that is, one that connects us with other people. After all, cities are a human invention designed for us to co-locate and co-exist. Read this article from our CEO Malcolm Snow on the role of public spaces in providing critical social connection for all of us. What do you think the role of public space is in connecting us to one another? http://bit.ly/criticalconnections
14.01.2022 Meet our Dickson place managers - Jhay and Tiina from Capital Space Innovation! Jhay and Tiina are proud locals and work on the ground to make the group centre's public spaces better, cleaner and greener. We caught up with them both to discuss more about their backgrounds, their roles and their hopes for Dickson. What's your favourite part of Dickson? Read their article here: bit.ly/DicksonPlaceManagers
14.01.2022 We have seen some huge milestones met in the City Walk Upgrade during the last few weeks with Rork Projects, one being a concrete pour of seating and edging. Some of our planter boxes have also been delivered to the site so we look forward to seeing these installed, ready to house some of our beautiful new plants. It is exciting to see our City Walk starting to take shape into an oasis of gardens and lawn areas. Don't forget to visit our interactive website to see more about our City Walk Upgrade: https://bit.ly/citywalkupgrade
12.01.2022 It’s all about community - the eclectic and multicultural community coming into the one space. One of the things I enjoy is the feeling of a small business community - that I can teach a class, go grab an ice cream from Frugii, or go and grab a coffee at Barrio. I love seeing the life that happens on the street in Braddon. There’s a real vibrancy. Bonnie Argo is one half of SOULution Yoga. Together with Roz Penfold, the pair provide wellness classes including yoga, Pilate...s and barre at their Braddon studio, where everyone is received exactly as they are. They pride themselves on boosting up their local community by having a positive impact on everyone who comes through the door. How do you focus on your own health and wellbeing?
11.01.2022 Recent developments around this area have really started to liven up and bring some life into Garema Place. We have grown into something where people head to this part of the city and want to look inside all the time. The city is becoming more colourful, more friendly. I like the public art, and I like our customers. We get really nice customers, lovely people.... Sandie Parkes is one of four owners of The Green Shed - two stores selling pre-loved clothing, books and bric-a-brac, The Green Shed Underground store on the corner of East Row and City Walk, and The Green Shed Shop in Garema Place. Sandie says they play an important role in the whole waste system, sorting through people’s unwanted treasures and bringing them to the city to be reused and repurposed. Where do you think are our city centre’s biggest treasures? #CBRtogether #weareCBR #cityrenewalCBR
11.01.2022 If you mentioned Haig Park five years ago, many Canberrans might have expressed a negative perception about the park or simply responded with, where is that? Since 2018, however, the park has undergone a transformation. But changing perceptions of a place is no easy task, read how Dr Cathy Hope, consortium lead and Engagement Coordinator in the UC Faculty of Arts & Design worked to drive the park’s transformation There’s some interesting facts about the usage of the park that might surprise you! https://www.act.gov.au//a-conversation-with-dr-cathy-hope-
10.01.2022 I do it for the people that I meet and see every single day. There is such a diversity in our customers and the city has an amazing dynamism. People have so many stories to share. I love how the city is evolving. I love seeing the city being revitalised, property owners coming in and starting new businesses, new developments, new apartments. But I still love the historic Sydney and Melbourne buildings. It’s a beautiful city centre that we can all be proud of, and I feel th...at the best is yet to come. Peter Barclay has been at the helm of city pub King O'Malley's for the past 20 years. He says it’s a meeting place for everyone - visitors, locals, students - and that it’s the people that give our city soul. Where is your favourite place to meet people in the city? #CBRtogether #WeareCBR #CityRenewalCBR

09.01.2022 We really are a community hub. We love this city, we love Canberra. It’s just so important that people feel they can call in somewhere, feel comfortable and feel at home, somewhere people can connect and just hang out. One of the things I’ve enjoyed the most is the fact that we have got to know our customers really well over five years now. In some cases we have known customers when they’ve been single, then coupled, onto their first child, onto their second child. That’s... pretty incredible. Sam Burns has seen his Braddon dream become a reality, creating a real neighbourhood coffee shop Barrio Collective Coffee. Making good strong coffee and even stronger community connections. Where is your favourite place to connect in Canberra's city? View more:https://bit.ly/rediscoveryourcity
09.01.2022 It’s going to really make Canberra look better than it has in the past, especially for interstate visitors. It looks like a lush area; the whole thing looks like a little park. In opening City Walk Upgrades ACT Government caught up with local business owner Sandie Bigg-Wither from the Green Shed and Beach Burrito Venue Manager Rafael Morales. Read more about what they had to say about the upgrades below.... https://www.act.gov.au//city-walk-transformed-into-a-green
09.01.2022 Today our CEO, Malcolm Snow, officially opened the City Walk Gallery in conjunction with Peter Barclay and Nancy Sever. Peter Barclay, a patron of the arts and passionate supporter of cultural activities in Canberra, invited Nancy Sever to extend her gallery into the city centre. He is a passionate advocate of Civic and its revitalisation as Canberra’s premier place. We want to acknowledge Peter’s ongoing contribution to the life of the city - indeed to its heart and soul. T...he Authority would like to commend Nancy Sever, director of City Walk Gallery, for her cultural entrepreneurship and confidence in the city centre in establishing this new gallery during these tough times. This new gallery space is a great addition to the network of cultural attractions already in Civic. The Authority wants to see more galleries and to promote the importance of the arts and creative industries as key drivers of a city centre renaissance. Hanging throughout the gallery are the works of Michael Taylor and Andrew Baines. They are uplifting and joyous, attributes that are central to our resilience and recovery as a community. You can visit the gallery from Wednesday to Saturday from 11am 5pm. For more information visit the website: http://www.nancysevergallery.com.au/city-walk-gallery

04.01.2022 More and more people are moving into the city. And I can see a bright future. I love how easy it is to get here. I can be right in the city so fast, the traffic is easy and organised. I like the surrounding businesses. People are positive and happy where we are in Braddon. Half of our customers come in post gym workout. We feed off their energy. It’s all about the people.... Will Fisher has a love for hospitality and clean eating, and strives to create a healthy experience for the customers at his cafe in Braddon Cafe gather. Named so because all produce is gathered locally, and it’s also the place where people gather for good quality, healthy and sustainable food. Where do you gather for your healthy food fix in the city?
