22.01.2022 HUMANS OF STIRLING By Barbara Price My name is Barbara Price, I am 90 years young. We emigrated from England in 1971 and settled in Balga and have lived here ever since, almost 50 years. We became heavily involved in the community, starting with the Balga Soccer Club. I was secretary there for a long time before becoming the registrar of the Junior Soccer Association, a position I held for 10 years before moving on to represent my club on the Soccer Federation of WA. ... At the smae time I was secretary of the Balga Recreation Committee and the Balga Bicentenial Committee, which involved getting the Balga Swimming Poolstreet Parades, Street Parties and the Balga Fair. I was then employed by the City of Stirling as the Balga Recreation Centre Supervisor which is now the Leisure Centre. After I retired in 1963, I joined the Balga Autumn Club and later on became their secretary, a position I still hold today. I still teach line dancing there. I was requested in 2000 to become the State Secreatary of the Western Australian Carpet Bowls Associaition and have just retired from this position. It is a pleasure to live in the Balga area, I have made many friends of all Nationalities and cannot think of a better place to live. I have a happy and busy life and I love Balga very much! 20.01.2022 HUMANS OF STIRLING By the Almadi Family We are Palestinian but we were both born in Baghdad where we met. We then moved to Syria for a few years before we arrived in Perth, Australia in September 2013 with our four children.... At first it was hard when we arrived as everything was different and the rest of our family were resettled in Sweden. We received a lot of support from our caseworker at Metropolitan Migrant Resource Centre and from other people that have assisted us since we have arrived. We now try and support other people who are settling in. We have made lots of new friends and now feel a part of the community. What we love about Australia is that it is very calm and we have been given so many opportunities. We have now started our own catering business - Food Almadi (you can find us on Facebook and Instagram) and we hope to one day open up our own restaurant. We now provide catering for City of Stirling events and activities as well as other social events. We were granted Australian Citizenship and had our ceremony on 2 July this year and we are so proud to call ourselves Australians! We believe that if you work hard and never give up, you will succeed in the end. Do you have a story that you want to share? We want to hear it! Tell us about your life and what has made you the person you are today by submitting your story (two paragraghs) and a photo of yourself to [email protected].

18.01.2022 Birak - Red (mirda) symbolises heat, sun and fire (December/January) Birak season sees the rains ease up and the warm weather really start to take hold. The afternoons are cooled by the sea breezes that abound from the southwest. Traditionally this was the fire season, a time to burn the country in mosaic patterns. An almost clockwork style of easterly winds in the morning and sea breezes in the afternoon, meant that this was the burning time of year for Nyoongar people.... The country would be burnt in mosaic patterns for several reasons including; fuel reduction, increasing the grazing pastures for some animals, to aid in seed germination for some plants and for ease of mobility across the country. As for the animals, there are many fledglings now venturing out of nests, though some are still staying close to their parents. Reptiles are looking to shed their old skin for a new one and with the rising temperatures and the decreasing rainfall, it's also time for the baby frogs to complete their transformation into adulthood.
