25.01.2022 MEET OUR PATIENTS MONDAY! :) Here is a picture of Truffles Norman, who popped in for a visit today. Truffles has an incredibly sensitive stomach, which causes her to get quite sick. Since we met truffles back in December 2016 her stomach issues were causing both her and her mum a lot of grief. We have since placed truffles on a very strict diet, and a combination of probiotics and omeprazole, a medication which reduces the acid levels in the stomach. Truffles is now very stable and even loves her special food!

25.01.2022 TICK OFF YOU TICKING TICKS! Paralysis Ticks, We know you have probably all heard of them but do you know how they effect our pets and what to do if you find one.... Ixodes holocyclus aka the paralysis tick is found on the east coast of Australia. They thrive in humid environments making South East Queensland the perfect breeding ground for this pest all year round. Paralysis ticks can be identified by their colour which ranges from brown to gray, their legs which are positioned beside the mouth piece at the front of the body, the 1st and 4th legs on both sides are darker than the 2nd and 3rd legs, and the final way to identify this tick is by their anal groove. During their feeding process the paralysis tick starts to inject a deadly toxin via their saliva into your pets blood stream. The tick can be attached for several days before you start to notice symptoms therefore regular daily searches for pets who are in high tick areas should be performed. Symptoms that your pet may be suffering from the paralysis tick: - Change in appetite - Change in voice (bark or meow) - Excessive salivation - Change in toileting - Breathing difficulties - Panting - Coughing/Gagging - Loss of blink reflex - Hind leg weakness progressing to full body paralysis - Cardiac Failure (caused by paralysis) When and how should I remove the tick? The tick should be removed as soon as possible to stop it from injecting more toxin into your pets blood stream. This can be done by pinching as close to the head as possible then twist and pull or of course we can remove it for you at the clinic. Note: If you do remove it at home prior to presenting to the clinic please make sure you put the tick in a sealed container so we can identify it. What treatment is available? Treatment will vary from patient to patient depending on the severity of their symptoms. Treatment may include: - Tick antiserum - Fluid therapy - Hospitalization - Antibiotics - Sedation - Full tick clip (patients are normally clipped short to allow for easy searching) - Ventilation and 24 hour care in severe cases Early treatment can be detrimental to your pets prognosis therefore if your find a tick on your pet we recommend booking an urgent appointment for us to check your pets health immediately. We are also lucky enough that we now have multiple products available to prevent the paralysis tick for both dogs and cats. Feel free to pop in clinic to chat to us about some of the products available we would be happy to help!

25.01.2022 Hello to our lovely friends, Just a reminder Easter is creeping up upon us quite fast, please do not feed your pets any chocolate or raisins during this time as tempting as it is, wanting them to be apart of the fun and joys. Civic Centre will be closed over the Easter break: 10th of April to 13th of April. We will be back on the 14th of April to care for all of your pet needs.

24.01.2022 AS LIGHT AS A FEATHER .. .. .. OR MAYBE NOT Did you know that around 41% of household pets are obese? :o You can use these helpful charts to see where your pet may be sitting on the weight scale. For dogs and cats there should be a noticeable waist and you should be able to gently feel the ribs without the need to push hard. ... We welcome you to pop down into the clinic with your pet to use our scales and have a weight check by one of our nurses. We can also recommend ways to help keep your pet healthy or lose weight if needed :)

24.01.2022 * TOXIC TUESDAY * Chocolate, although it is delicious treat for us humans, can be deadly to our pets. Different types of chocolate contain different quantities of the toxic chemical theobromine. Theobromine is very similar to caffeine, and works as a diuretic, heart stimulant, blood vessel dialator, and muscle relaxant. Dogs and cats cannot metabolize theobromine like we can, therefore making our pets much more sensitive to the chemicals effects. Chocolate toxicity can cause... the following symptoms: - Diarrhoea - Vomitting - Increased thirst - Panting - Restlessness - Excessive urination - Tachycardia (high heart rate) - Seizures - Collapse - and in rare severe cases death Clinical signs may take a couple hours to develop and can last for days. Early intervention and treatment is required for the best possible prognosis. Treatment can include: - Emesis (inducing vomitting helps to remove the toxic substance from the gastric system, therefore minimizing how much can be absorbed into the body) - Fluid therapy - Activated charcoal (this is normally fed to the patient as it helps in absorbing any of the remaining theobromine in their system) - Medications (will vary on a case to case basis) So, what do you do if your suspect your pet has ingested chocolate, come down to the clinic immediately.

17.01.2022 Flee from your Flea problems Remember that single flea you saw on your pet recently, now consider the fact that a single adult flea actually lays up to 50 eggs per day. This is why we see flea problems progress so quickly and the unfortunate truth is majority of flea infestations are actually in the environment, therefore when you notice fleas on your pet you should not only treat your pet but also the environment. Fleas left untreated can cause FAD otherwise known as flea a...llergy dermatitis and with heavy burdens can also cause anemia. Not to mention these annoying little buggers also bite humans too, causing skin irritation and itchiness. Due to our lovely warm climate in QLD flea's are also a year round problem as we have the perfect breeding ground to continue their life cycle. Fact: It can take 3 months to completely break a flea cycle, if you have a flea burden in your house make sure you clean your house thoroughly and keep up with prevention.

15.01.2022 Your pets age much faster than we do, this is why we recommend 6 monthly health checks for all pets over the age of 7 years. During the check up you will have a one on one consultation with the veterinarian where your pet will receive a full physical examination from head to tail. So, tell us how old is your pet in human years? Pictured is Marley Barbara who is 14 years in dog years and 72 years in human years.

13.01.2022 * TOXIC TUESDAY * Todays toxic chemical is chloroxylenol which is common household disinfectant commonly known by most as Dettol. This chemical is used in so many households but did you know it can cause irreversible harm to your feline friends?... Below are some of the common signs that your pet may be displaying due to being exposed to this toxic substance: - Lethargy - Vomiting - Inappetence - Loss of co-ordination - Seizures - Irregular breathing - Tachycardia (increased heart rate) If you use Dettol in your house and notice that your pet is displaying any of these signs please contact us immediately and book an appointment. We have had a couple cases recently where the patient was frequently being bathed in dettol and unfortunately this resulted in the young patient being diagnosed with end stage renal failure and he is now on palliative care. We recommend that if you continue to use this product in your house make sure the area is completely dry prior to your pet having access to the space, and never put the product in direct contact with your pets skin.

11.01.2022 How often do you check your pets teeth? Meet Molly! Molly presented to our clinic for a dental scale and polish. On initial examination we could visualise that Molly had a grade 2 dental disease. ... Grade 2 dental disease means the patient has noticible plaque build up and gingitivitis. Along with this the patient also has bad breath associated with this disease. We recommended that Molly be put under general anaesthetic to perform a full scale and polish and to thoroughally assess Molly's teeth. This is recommened for 1 of 2 reasons, the first reason being that dogs unlike humans will not sit still and hold their mouth open whilst we clean their teeth, and the second reason being that for us to perform a complete clean we are required to scale not only the visible part of the teeth but also go under the gumline to remove any built up plaque, which to an awake patient can cause some discomfort. In the first picture you can see that Molly has a decent amount of tartar build up, gum recession and gingivitis. In the second picture which is post scale and polish you can see that the gums already look less inflammed and all of the tartar has been removed, (also check out those pearly whites). Please keep an eye on your pets oral hygeine (we brush our teeth why shouldn't we care for our pets teeth aswell). Also feel free to pop down to the clinic to talk to our friendly nurses regarding preventative care for your pets teeth. There are many available options such as daily brushing (yes thats a thing), dental chews and prescription diets. We would be happy to chat and help you and your furry friend out! :)

10.01.2022 Meet Kyzar Day ! Kyzar is almost 5 years old and is a black German Shepherd. This is a picture of him after nurse Crystal went to his house to give him a well needed manicure (nail trim hehe). As you can see he was pretty happy afterwards and enjoyed lots of cuddles. If you were lucky enough to see us at RSPCA million paws walk this year, you may have seen Kyzar there with us.... We have been seeing Kyzar since he was a little pup, and we have been seeing Mrs Day Since 2002 with all of her previous pets! She and her pets are always a delight to see and bring a smile to our faces. :)

01.01.2022 Myth Buster Mondays My dogs nose is dry, that means his sick right? Wrong.... It simply means that your dogs nose is dry. It actually does not indicate that your pet is sick. However if you notice any abnormal swelling, breathing difficulties or a runny nose (especially if its runny for more than a couple days) you should bring your fluffy friend in for a check up!
