25.01.2022 The coastal display garden has had a much needed ‘hair cut’. Just in time for the school holidays. Now you can see the tic tac toe, nature play box, new fallen logs and the plants! Lots more still to do. Good thing we gave our working bee this weekend. Look forward to seeing the ‘small pretties’ corner showing of it’s flowering beauties instead of a sea of wild oats. Check it out if you are in the area.

23.01.2022 The plant swap has started. A few lucky residents received their plant packs today. Most of the rest will be delivered this weekend! Thanks again to the coast protection board for the grant. The local residents for embracing this offer. And last but not least our volunteers who collected and cleaned the seed, grew the plants and helped make this grant a success.

20.01.2022 Tick. The habitat logs have been delivered and situated in approximately their final positions. Two down near the ferry terminal and three near the Shady Grove (middle of the reserve). Looking forward to seeing what critters take up residence / where. And how many people take advantage of the new seating options. Thanks to Ken Lovelock of Myponga for saving and selling these logs (great place to buy firewood too). Thanks also for your care and patience in getting the logs i...nto position with only occasional assistance from Michael. Special thanks to the Coast Protection Board for the grant funding.

18.01.2022 What a whirlwind month it has been for us. So exciting to have the last of our recent 'grant funded' efforts installed on site. Thanks to Simon Hutchinson's team at Climbing Tree, the coastal display garden near the ferry terminal at Cape Jervis is now home to two carved gum nuts styled after the locally rare Kingscote mallee, Eucalyptus rugosa. The two gum nuts were hand-crafted by Daniel, and he was there to do the installation with Ross. Great to see two passionate profess...ionals at work! Not only were the gum nuts installed today, but we also installed our new signage. 20 small red signs highlighting the locally 'rare', 'vulnerable' and 'endangered' plants growing in the display garden, and 10 larger blue signs that highlight some of the features of the garden. We are so thankful to the Coast Protection Board for the grant that made this all possible, and the Normanville Natural Resource Centre and the Cape Jervis Progress Association who contributed generously to co-funding of the gum nuts. None of this would have been possible without our committed volunteers and our long term support from the District Council of Yankalilla and Natural Resources Adelaide Mount Lofty Ranges. Come along, learn and enjoy. And yes, the gum nuts are 'nature play' and can be climbed on. You can't see it, but they are concreted / bolted into the ground, so no risk of them moving!

16.01.2022 Of all the things our volunteers do. Brushcutting is the one with the most WOW factor.

16.01.2022 Some excellent news. We are allowed to work on site again. Yippee. Obviously a little differently, practicing social distancing, maintaining good hygiene, and maximum group sizes of 10. More details to follow. Our next working bee will be Sat 6th June (10.00 - 4.00) and Sun (9-12). Note this is the long weekend. We have had over 30 mm of rain this week so great planting weather. ... A few different shots from around the Cape today.

14.01.2022 Always a thrill to see new plants flowering in the coastal display garden near the ferry terminal. The first is Cullen australasicum or native scurf pea. Planted in 2019. sourced from a local heritage agreement block near Talisker Mine. Thanks Julie T. And the second Pelargonium australis, austral stork’s bill. Thanks to Corey Jackson and the Yankalilla Community Nursery for donating these plants this year. Hopefully they are doing well in the small pretties packs that we...nt out to the community this year. Also found time for some maintenance. Showing the before and after slashing of the grasslands. All those native grasses among the weeds make brushcutting that much harder.

13.01.2022 We did promise you would be hearing lots from the group in the next few weeks! Now here's something for you, not just a good news story. An offer for residents of Cape Jervis. Swap weeds for plants! The idea was conceived when it looked like we would be in a Covid-19 complete lock down for much longer than we were. ... Check out our website for more http://www.cjccg.com/?page_id=1713 Or pick up a brochure in the Cape Jervis tavern/shop. To take advantage of this offer, send a photo or sketch of your selected spot, and indicate your first and second preferences for the pack you would like to receive, together with your name, address and phone or email contact, by Thurs 4th June 2020 - via SMS to 0448 909 881 (Carolyn) or 0406 384 425 (Liz) - or email, [email protected] - or post on our Facebook page, CJCCG.CoastCare Select a plant pack (1st and 2nd preference) Small pretties and ground covers Small to medium shrubs Medium to tall trees Rare plants or those needing extra TLC We hope to hear from you soon

12.01.2022 Want to try your hand at designing a sign for Cape Jervis? As part of a grant we have received, we are planning to install some Botanic Garden-type plastic engraved / metal-backed signs, 400 mm x 300 mm on site, to promote rare coastal plants and their habitat value. Want to try your hand at writing / designing one? You only need to write about 100 words of text... We hope that by having different people involved in writing the different signs, we will reach a broader audience. We are very open to style perhaps a poem? or something funny? The signs should complement the plants we have planted at the coastal display garden, near the picnic table at the start of the Heysen Trail / ferry terminal. Suggested topics include 1. Small pretties corner 2. Grasslands food for ground feeding birds 3. Sheoaks - Allocasuarina verticillata main food source of the the endangered glossy black cockatoo 3. Habitat logs for lizards / insects / echidnas 4. Natural recruitment where plants we have planted have set seed and germinated elsewhere on site 5. Hakea vittata (a rare plant) favoured food of the yellow tailed black cockatoo 6. Signage near saltbushes - saltbush blue butterflies - or the use of saltbushes in agriculture for integrated pest management Or perhaps you have an idea of your own? We provide three example signs - see the photos Some points to note: There is a tight deadline: we need your text by Sunday, May 24, 9 pm. If you want to include a hand drawing, they need to be very simple line drawings If you are interested, please send your email address to Liz Cousins, either via personal message (Facebook) or email [email protected], and she will send you further details and a Powerpoint template. Remember the deadline for completed signs is this Sunday, May 24, 9 pm. We would really like your input!! Thanking you in advance!!

12.01.2022 Follow up echidna story. And pics. This time poo! Very cylindrical. And full of insects. Spotted while out doing follow up lupin control. Learning by doing. Comparing brush cutting (fast) and hand pulling (slow). ... Verdict. If doing brushcutting. Needs to be before flowering. So now bagging up the few seedpods that developed from the flowering stem.

12.01.2022 Carolyn is obviously delighted with those logs!

11.01.2022 The joys of landcare! Finding endangered orchids! Here Western Limestone Spider-orchid, Caladenia bicalliata (previously Jonesiopsis bicalliata). IUCN listed as "endangered" in our region, KAN02, and rare in SA. The SA seedbank lists a small patch of them at Cape Jervis and another in Newland Head. We were lucky enough to stumble on this patch when "cyclopings" at the COOTS site (Lands End) a few years ago - and again last weekend! ... The hairy stems of this orchid really stand out when you are looking for small wattle "cyclops" seedlings. Which we sadly still find by the 100s! We also found some round-leaf orchids that we had assumed where gnat orchids, but one patch had seed pods making us think they may have been helmut orchids - will have to go back earlier next year and find out which one they are.

11.01.2022 Thanks to everyone who contributed to our successful and social working bee weekend. It was fantastic to see our regulars and four new local volunteers. Lots of gaps filled in helping shape the coastal display garden near the ferry terminal / start of the Heysen Trail and a few other focal points on the reserve. Weather was exceptionally kind and we managed the social distancing / covid safe non-sharing of tools with a minimal of fuss. ... We missed the sharing of cake and tea and coffee and coped with thermoses, chairs and chocolate and muesli bars! Take care and enjoy the rest of the long weekend.

11.01.2022 Beautiful morning at Cape Jervis. After yesterday’s 18 mm rain and feral winds. Not so nice. An echidna has been out and about too. We often see nose prints but I don’t think i have ever seen clear claw prints too! And a few beautiful scenery shots.

09.01.2022 June Working Bee with a difference: social distancing, and not much planting - Sat 6th & Sun 7th June Not the usual full-on June planting weekend. Why? ... Covid-19 and we’re giving 80% of our plants to Cape Jervis residents as part of the Coast Protection Board Grant project (thanks sponsors!) Due to Covid-19 restrictions, we can’t even provide cake or hot water for tea/coffee so please BYO chair, hot & cold drinks, snacks and lunch Each session will be a little bit of planting, enjoying the fresh air and company (socially distanced of course!), removing tree guards, and for the keen (or keen to learn), weeding SAT, 10 am 1 pm: Ferry Terminal/Start Heysen trail morning tea, 11.15 am, lunch at 1 pm, then move to Sorata St SAT, 2 pm 4 pm: 2 pm 4 pm, Coast end of Sorata St SUN, 9 am 12 pm: Corner Flinders Drive & Fleurieu Ave morning tea approx 10.30 am We welcome new volunteers. BYO tools, especially gloves if you can. If not, let us know, and we will provide you with a sterilised set of tools and new or disposable gloves and we will have plenty of hand sanitiser available / spray bottles with 80% methylated spirits / paper towel for you to give stuff a wipe over The weather looks kind (low winds), but cold, with a few light showers (<1 mm) for Saturday. Hope to see you there. Contact: [email protected] ph. 0448 909 881 Funding for the plants for weed plant swap was possible thanks to a Community Participation Grant from the Coast Protection Board, with support from the District Council of Yankalilla & Natural Resources AMLR)

08.01.2022 Lovely morning for a walk around the Cape. About 7 mm or rain overnight was much needed and saved me from watering today. Check out these flowering beauties along the Nature Trail from Fleurieu Ave toward the ferry terminal. A few landmarks included to show you where to look. ... What else can you find. Please feel free to share your photos as a comment.

08.01.2022 Come and join the fun! Fingers crossed for good weather.

07.01.2022 This morning’s working bee will be a case of dodging showers. 9-12 likely to be 9-11.30 with morning tea at Carolyn’s. If you are brave and still planning to come give us a ring as we are not sure where we will be working. Probably close to Sorata St so we can duck back to the house / tidy the shed between showers. Great day yesterday got lots of brush cutting in. And lots of onion weed removed. And saw some wildlife including this bearded dragon.

06.01.2022 Great working bee today. Great to see some new faces join us for the walk and weed. Late autumn and already so many different small pretties on show. And yes we found orchids! Thanks everyone for helping us to protect this special habitat.

05.01.2022 Ladybird magnet. Pelargonium australe. I had stopped to admire the lovely clump of native pelargoniums near the new flag pole at the Delamere shop when I noticed a ladybird. Then 2, 3, and many more. Even more surprised to see so many different species. Look at all the different arrangements of spits. Biodiversity in action. And pretty flowers to boot. Guessing the plants were grown by the Yankalilla Community Nursery who kindly donated some for our small pretties packs.

01.01.2022 We are very excited to announce our success at getting funding for a Community Participation Grant from the Coast Protection Board. Even the native plants are celebrating, native cranberry (Astroloma humifusum) at its starry best in Autumn! We received $8046 from the board and generous cash donations from the Normanville Natural Resource Centre ($1000) and Cape Jervis Progress Association ($800), with additional support from District Council of Yankalilla, and Natural Resour...ces Adelaide Mount Lofty Ranges. This meaning that we will be able to successfully complete all of our outcomes. 1. organise a social media campaign aimed at Cape Jervis residents inviting them to participate in a local plants for weed swap, providing targeted weed information and local plants to interested community members. 2. develop an educational / nature play activity suitable for self isolating students and home schooling parents, and provide resources to Yankalilla Area School to promote interest in coastal biodiversity and Indigenous food plants. 3. promote rare coastal plants and their habitat value through new signage, a carved gum nut art installation, and habitat for wildlife with the addition of habitat logs. 4. employ contractors to control red alert weeds, predominantly woody weeds (Acacia cyclops and olive) and Gazania to continue volunteer efforts to build resilience for vegetation remnants by improving connectivity between remnants. Here’s some of the logs we will be installing on site for habitat. We still have to decide where! We are really excited by this grant as it allows us to consolidate our on-site works over the past 8 years and build stronger links to the Cape Jervis and greater Yankalilla communities. The catch for the group is that all work needs to be completed by about 15th June THIS YEAR (yes, in about four weeks), to allow us to complete the final reporting by the end of the financial year. These tight deadlines have come about because COVID-19 prevented previously funded projects from spending their grants. Thankfully we had lots of ideas and trusted contractors, businesses and friends (new and old) to call on to allow us to pull this proposal together. You will be hearing a lot from us over the next 4-5 weeks as we complete this exciting project. Thanks again for everyone who helped make this a reality in these difficult times.
