25.01.2022 Some useful reminders as we headed back to Kindy for the beginning of Term 2.
25.01.2022 At the moment with schools starting to reopen and children and families starting to return to preCovid19 life, it is understandable to feel stressed. This fact sheet from BeYou Families helps you recognise and manage stress.
24.01.2022 At C&K Flagstone Kindergarten we encourage the children to represent their thinking in a range of ways. Yesterday, the children used whiteboards and clipboards to either pre-plan their ideas and projects OR to document how their idea developed during the morning. By representing their thinking in this way, it * enables children to clarify their thinking;... * acts as a common reference point in group projects; * provides the children with an opportunity to represent their own thinking, free from assumption and captures their 'voice' in their learning; * tracks the progress of a project and/or growth of an idea or concept; * allows the children to reflect on their initial idea and what changes and modifications were required to get to where they did. Children use different coloured pens to show how their thinking has 'grown' and to capture their reflections and future planning. #learningthroughplay #powerfullearners #thinkersandtheorisers
23.01.2022 Worried about starting kindy next year? It can be a big change but as your child’s secure base, there are things you can do to make the change easier. This art...icle from the US has some ideas for how to prepare for kindy, including talking about the new routines, visiting the kindy and talking to the teacher. http://bit.ly/2CZlGaX
23.01.2022 We are so excited about the possibilities of Term 2 .... bring it! #feelingdetermined #wereallinthistogether #teamawesome
23.01.2022 Be gentle and kind (with yourself)
22.01.2022 Today marks the beginning of National Reconciliation Week 2020. National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. The dates for NRW remain the same each year; 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mab...o decision respectively. Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. At C&K Flagstone Kindergarten we respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the Land on which we laugh, play, learn and grow - the Mununjali People of the Yugambeh Language group. We are also intensely proud of our journey towards reconciliation and for the last couple of years we have had our own centre-specific Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) in place with our goals for reconciliation. We are also proud of our work around reviving the Yugambeh language in collaboration with the Yugambeh Museum. Every day the children and families use Yugambeh words to describe the world around them and a successful grant last year will allow us to develop more resources with the Yugambeh Museum to increase Yugambeh language use in early childhood services and schools across country. #nrw2020 #inthistogether #yugambeh #mununjali #reconciliation #respect
22.01.2022 What an amazing opportunity!
21.01.2022 What an amazing safe space for families.
20.01.2022 Two of the children wanted to drive their excavators and trucks over our dry creek bed to get to the other side. When they tried, they encountered several problems and one of our educators asked them what they could do to make the trip easier. One of the boys remembered a project from last year when some of the children used resources from the shed to build a bridge. With some support and reminders, he shared this memory with the other children and the group immediately moved... over to the shed to find the materials they needed. Initially, the group decided to try using just a mat over the creek, but on reflection they found that it didn't support their weight and followed the line of the creekbed. Following some robust conversation, the group were encouraged to revisit the shed to see what else they could use to help support the mat so that it stayed flat across the top from side to side. Looking around the shed, they decided on two climbing boards and the group worked together to carry the boards over to the creek where they positioned the boards so they were 'stable'. Once in position, they tested the stability of the planks by tentatively walking across them. Stability confirmed, they worked together to drag and push the mat into position. Time for another test - this time a sitting test to see whether the planks and mat could support their weight and stay stable. One at a time, they walked across the mat and then decided to all sit on the mat at the same time and invited another child (who had been watching on) to join them. The group's final test involved revisiting their original need for a bridge - to drive their truck and excavator across. With all tests passed, the bridge proved popular with other children too and the boys were excited to share their thinking with others who wanted to build their own bridge.
18.01.2022 Biscuits for afternoon tea? Why don't you make some with the children?
18.01.2022 What an amazing reading of one of our favourites, "We're going on a Bear Hunt". Have you seen any of the bears in your neighborhood when you have been out for a walk?
17.01.2022 This morning two of the children wanted to drive the dump trucks over the dry creek bed as a faster option than driving all of the way around. As they tried to do so, they found that it was very bumpy and hard to navigate the trucks to the other side. Miss Sue asked them what they could do to make this easier and encouraged them to look in the sandpit shed for some ideas....Continue reading

16.01.2022 Some very important advice.
16.01.2022 Our kindy rule is "It has to be safe for everyone". The children are encouraged to engage in dynamic risk assessments throughout the day to not only ensure the safety of everyone else in their learning community but to take responsibility for this as well. This week we have started the day with foggy mornings and a very wet (and slippery) playground. Instead of educators merely cleaning up before the children arrive, the assessment of the safety of the equipment and the play...ground becomes a teachable moment and children are actively encouraged to determine whether the playground equipment is safe to play on and if not, what measures need to be put in place to ensure the safety of their peers. On one such occasion, a group of children determined that the playground was 'too slippery' and 'not safe' even after wiping the surfaces down. Concerned that some of their peers may not notice that the surfaces were slippery, the group set about designing a set of obstacles to prevent their peers from using the playground. Once the obstacles were in place, the children tested their ideas to see whether any adjustments needed to be made.
15.01.2022 Every year, the amazing team from the Flagstone SS P&C visit us at kindy so that our children can go shopping at the school's Mother's Day stall and buy gifts for the special mothers in their lives. This year, as with so many other things, the school's Mother's Day stall looks a little different. Please support them where you can and encourage your child to choose a gift online for collection from Aussie Homeloans (near Coles)>=> A big thankyou to the Flagstone SS P&C for con...tinuing to include us in their plans. 15.01.2022 The beginning of Term 2 on Monday will be interesting - full of possibilities as well as letting go of how we have always started a new term. We are so excited to be 'in this together' with such amazing children and their families as we explore Kindy@Home as well as providing a program for children of essential workers and vulnerable families on site.
14.01.2022 Every day is a fabulous day for MUD play! Mud provides a fantastic sensory experience and many children are naturally drawn to it, as it provides endless opportunities for discovery and experimentation. The possibilities in mud play for young children are open-ended and provide them with many play options as the mud can vary from wet to dry and crumbly to rough, soft and smooth. It allows children to be creative as they mould it any way they wish. They like to cook with it,... bathe in it, smear their bodies with it and draw with it. Mud play also supports childrens physical development, both their large motor skills as they learn to slip and slide in the mud and fine motor skills as they manipulate the mud with their hands. Childrens social play can be enhanced through mud play as they cooperate, have fun and create together. In fact in 2007, the University of Bristol found that friendly bacteria in soil could actually be responsible for activating a group of neurons that produce serotonin, the chemical responsible for raising our mood. So playing with mud not only makes us happy but also helps to build childrens immune systems. Research tells us that getting dirty earlier in life can often lead to less allergies and a body that can cope and fight off germs. Mud connects children directly with nature and the plants and living creatures that inhabit that world. Mud play supports children to be more curious about the world, with many children finding fascination with creatures such as worms. Do you have a mud pit at home? What other types of messy play do you enjoy? We would love to see some photos!
14.01.2022 Our kindy rule is "It has to be safe for everyone" and in encouraging children to engage in these dynamic risk assessments throughout the day across all situations they are not only actively involved in taking responsibility for the safety of themselves but for also for others. When children plan obstacle courses, create constructions in the mud pit or build bridges, staff encourage children to apply this kindy rule to help them consider all safety precautions that need to b...e put in place to not only protect themselves, their peers and their teachers, but also parents and siblings at the end of the day, our cleaner and any other visitors to the centre. Last Friday when two builders arrived at the centre to replace the sleepers on the bridge across the dry creek bed, we reminded the children that adults also have rules to make sure it's 'safe for everyone' and asked them to brainstorm what safety systems the builders might put in place to make this so. They thought that the builders would: * wear 'bright' (high vis) clothes (so people could see them); * wear glasses (to protect their eyes); * put up a fence (to keep 'us' out and keep us safe) * lift the 'logs' together. When the builders arrived, they generously encouraged us to sit a safe distance away while they prepared the new sleepers for our bridge. Almost instantly, the children could see that the builders: * had placed tape around their truck (so that people knew not to go inside) * were wearing ear plugs (to protect their hearing) * were wearing steel capped boots. Miss Tracey kindly had anticipated the builders wearing steel capped boots and had brought hers in for the children to feel and explore. With our new bridge sleepers in place, the children have been exploring bridge building of their own and revisiting an old favourite story "The Three Billy Goats' Gruff".
14.01.2022 This week as we have enjoyed the beautiful autumn sun in the sandpit, we have been exploring the concept of shadows. Our attention was drawn to the shadow of a small stick as a child placed it in the sand to begin to make a forest. Together, we talked about how the long shadow made the stick appear larger, like one of the larger trees in the forest and the child (and then some of her peers) set about finding more twigs, sticks, leaves and branches) to add. By playing with sha...dows the children were beginning to understand cause and effect, as they explored and observed what makes a shadow and where the light needs to be to cast a shadow. They experimented with size and shapes as they moved the shadows around. Plenty of practice with experimenting and exploring helps children to learn about the way the physical world works. Observation skills will help them to notice differences and make changes, like when they move a stick closer to or further away from the light source. These are the types of provocations that we are sending through to our families at home to try. What experiments with light and shadow have you explored with your family? 13.01.2022 Lest we forget
11.01.2022 Thanks to Professionals Jimboomba, this competition is opening again for 2020 after the school holidays.
11.01.2022 Last Thursday and Friday one of the children worked tirelessly to create a road system using loose parts in the mudpit. At the end of the week, we negotiated with him whether he thought that we should pack it away for the weekend or leave it out for the children in the other group to add to. He was happy to leave it out for the children who have attended Monday and Tuesday this week with the understanding that his road system may look very different when he returns to kindy t...oday. On Monday when the other children arrived at kindy, they were excited by what they found in the mudpit and set about adding a city to the road system. Two of the children decided that they needed more bricks, but discussed how too many bricks in the wagon would make it too hard to move from the other end of the playground. We encouraged them to predict how many bricks would be enough for the wagon without making it too heavy and they decided on 14 after quite a rigorous discussion and then set about to test this prediction - they were right! They worked together over a number of trips to source the loose parts they needed for their construction and then set about problem solving how to make the lengths of timber stable. We looked to an idea used in the construction of the road system - concrete (ie mud) betwee the bricks and the children applied this idea to their construction along with struts and brick walls to support the structure. We can't wait to see the reaction of the child who initiated the project! EYLF: Outcome 4 - Children are confident and involved learners.
11.01.2022 Thanks for coming to visit yesterday Dr Matt and Belinda, the children had so much fun! We can’t wait to see you again on Monday when you visit Group A.
10.01.2022 At C&K Flagstone Kindergarten we are proudly involved with the Logan City Council's "Waste Smart" Kindy program. We completed a waste audit in February and developed three goals for our centre: 1. Reduce the amount of general waste we are contributing to landfill;... 2. Reduce the amount of paper towels used in the bathrooms - ideally replacing these with an option with a more environmentally friendly footprint; 3. Educating the children around the different types of plastics and encourage them to place different types of plastics in different containers for reuse (once washed) in loose parts collections and collage. When we completed the initial waste audit we found that we already had a number of sustainability practices in place. We: * have water tanks to flush the toilets and water the garden; * have a worm farm * collect food scraps for some of the families' chickens; * we recycle printer cartridges and only print when necessary; * we reuse parts of our general waste as loose parts and collage materials. To help us gauge our progress through this program, we decided to tip out the general waste once a week for each group and consider whether all items needed to go to landfill or whether they could be reused or repurposed. What we found initially was that most of our general waste could be eliminated if families packed lunches in bento boxes or reusable containers. This would eliminate the need for plastic lunch wrap, plastic zip lock bags and individual yoghurt pouches. The children considered that while there was some yoghurt pouch tops and individual yoghurt containers in the waste, these could be placed into a separate container for later cleaner and reuse throughout kindy. While our plans to reduce the amount of paper towels in our bathrooms has been put on hold due to Covid19, we are proud of how far our project has developed even in these unusual times. We can't wait to see how the children record their developing understanding of the importance of sustainability measures and what suggestions they may have for reducing, reusing and recycling.

05.01.2022 Jingeri (hello!) everyone! We have some very exciting news to share with everyone. Before the school holidays, we attended the C&K Innovation in Curriculum virtual awards event and we are very pleased (and blessed) to announce that we were a winner! We were recognised for our Yugambeh language revival project, honouring Australia's First Nation's People and acting as leaders in the early education community.... If you would like to know more about how we embed Yugambeh into our program, get in contact and we'd be happy to have a yarn.
05.01.2022 We hope you enjoy reading this story with your children as much as we have reading it with children this week during National Reconciliation Week. Some of you may be familiar with the Paul Kelly song of the same name, found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_ndC07C2qw

02.01.2022 At C&K Flagstone Kindergarten we encourage the children to both draw plans of their ideas in the planning stage as well as draw a picture of their projects once complete. Drawing a plan of their ideas allows the children to collaborate on projects by sharing their ideas in a visual way, supporting the planning conversations they are engaging in. At the end of a project, the children use drawn representations to guide and record their evaluations about the success of different elements of the project and share these learnings with their peers.
02.01.2022 Today our jarjums (children) talked about the importance of culture, language, Dreaming and traditions in the lives of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. We spoke about the importance of Elders in community sharing this rich culture, especially as the children are the Elders of tomorrow (this year's theme). We watched a short video about jarjums connecting with culture on Country and then we asked them how we could celebrate National Aboriginal and Torres Str...ait Islander Children's Day at kindy. They thought we could: * explore the idea of Dreaming stories in the puppet theatre; * use collage materials or paint to make Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander flags; * use Yugambeh (the language of the Traditional Custodians of this place, the Mununjali People) at home and teach our families.
02.01.2022 Inquiry learning is 'deep' learning. It * enhances a childs sense of identity, enabling the passion a child has, that unique interest, strength or talent, that helps define who they are, to become part of their learning, leading their thinking, investigation and creativity * enables children to experience a sense of belonging, sharing a common interest, collaborating with reciprocal rights and responsibilities to learn through research and investigation contributes to wellbe...ing, as the inquiry experiences contribute to engagement, motivation, positive dispositions for learning and creative thinking * encourages children to resource their own learning, providing the opportunity to connect with people, places, technologies and materials as children transfer and adapt prior knowledge to new understandings * stimulates the effective use of technology, as children access information, investigate and express their ideas using a range of languages to represent their thinking and understanding. Inquiry learning starts with a wondering, a question, a need to find out 'why'. What learning adventures are you going on today?
01.01.2022 With challenge comes growth ... This week has been such a blessing in coming to understand what such a special connection we have with our children, their families and with each other in our staff team. However we are connecting with you all, know that we are deeply investing in finding even more ways to continue our connection with you.
