02.01.2022 A massive fire in Prahran on 11 January 1914 destroyed The Colosseum (drapery store) and affected nearby businesses the boot shop, hat manufacturer, fancy-goods retailer, Telegraph Club Hotel and the Prahran Town Hall. Thankfully Miss Mackintoshs mercery store, was saved. The cost at the time must have been massive but they did rebuild. A rough estimate of the damage-and not an inflated estimate either-is 120,000. To the residents of Toorak the various... phases of the fire presented a beautiful and novel sight. The first outbreak was responsible for the appearance of a delicate white cloud-like cumulus, which floated away, and was followed by another, equally delicate, equally beautiful. Then the black smoke rose into the towering columns, and the rush of flame pierced the black. The phase of beauty had passed. How journalism has changed.
