22.01.2022 What happens in childhood around weight messages, is very important for positive mental health around your body, weight and overall wellness later in life. I really recommend Rebecca's blog and social media if you are interested in this topic. I also want to make an important distinction. Eating well for health and wellness, isn't anti-weight loss. Very often weight loss happens as a consequence of the new healthy behaviours. The important distinction in the health vs weight ...model, is that the actual weight and measuring it are not the reasons for the changes in behaviour, nor a way of measuring change in health and wellness. Weight alone, is a poor indicator of health. It's not positive for mental health either. There is a paradigm shift happening, and as health professionals we are always learning and changing the way we aim to get the best holistic health outcomes for our clients.

20.01.2022 Fabulous to hear of extra funding available for patients with severe eating disorders from late next year. Much needed access for more people.

17.01.2022 This is a great example of environmental and political strategies to impact the health of populations. The impact on sugary drink consumption is really impressive.

16.01.2022 Sometimes the best prescription isn't a prescription at all. I do recommend getting out in the great outdoors to add some 'joy of nature' to that walk when you are able to though. Lots of benefits for blood glucose control and insulin resistance from walking too.

15.01.2022 An older article, but a good explanation of what we know: plant based, pescatarian and Mediterranean eating patterns are good for the body, and good for the environment too/

15.01.2022 Really interesting article about the potential role of the gut / brain axis in the development of conditions like Dementia, Autism and other health conditions. Early days, but there is some fabulous research happening.

13.01.2022 A really great read about the impact of weight stigma. This is something which women with PCOS (and other women) have reported as stopping them from seeking the medical care they need. If you recognise this as an issue for yourself, reach out.

10.01.2022 When you think about movement, rather than "exercise", you might come up with some new ways to be physically active throughout your day or even realise that you... already move quite a bit. Every little bit counts, and our bodies really like it when we do a variety of different movements - that way all our muscles get a chance to do their thing and help us stay supple and mobile and keep up our bone density. Even if you already do formal strength training, for example, your body loves to move in different ways while you're at home and at work. It doesn't have to be hardcore to be beneficial for your mind and body. Is there any movement you'd like to add into your life, or thank yourself for already providing? [Image text reads: our bodies love all sorts of movement: weeding the garden, barefoot lawnbowls with friends, dancing around the house, vacuuming, putting up shelves, carrying things, playing an instrument, chopping vegetables, browsing through shops, fluffing up couch cushions, wringing water out of wet towels, painting a canvas or a room, grooming a pet, walking on a balance beam, throwing things, hanging laundry, brushing hair, giving a massage (even to ourselves)]

07.01.2022 A good follow up to yesterday's post.

07.01.2022 It's OK to not get caught up in diet culture this Christmas. Breathe. Allowing yourself to eat the foods you actually enjoy (and saying no to foods you don't enjoy much at all) is so powerful. You are much more likely to do that (and feel good about it) when you give yourself space to breathe, think and just 'be'. I love Christmas. The lights, the decorations, the food, but most of all just sitting and enjoying that with the people I love. You won't be seeing any 'tips to cut calories on Christmas Day' posts from me. That doesn't mean eating everything in sight, it's just part of my big picture view of food and eating. What you do on one day doesn't undo all the self-care, body positive self talk and mindful eating throughout the year.

05.01.2022 Really interesting article. While social media has many positive benefits, it has also increased societal pressure around eating 'clean' and being perfect.

04.01.2022 Did you know that about 1 in 2 Aussies will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85? Today is #WorldCancerDay, and we wanted to remind everyone, how important... good nutrition is for reducing cancer risk. Here’s the World Cancer Research Fund’s recommendations on what to eat to reduce your risk of cancer: Eat more plants: Make whole grains, fruit, veg and beans/lentils part of your diet, and limit your red and processed meat intake Eat Your Vitamins: Try to get your nutrients through food alone, rather than supplements Eat less fast food, and other processed foods high in fat, starches or sugars, including sugary drinks. Reduce your alcohol intake Image from World Cancer Research Fund UK Check out the full cancer prevention recommendations here: https://buff.ly/2CDEAVR

04.01.2022 Love that it's soup weather! Last week it was chicken and sweetcorn from scratch (chicken stock is so easy in the slow cooker), and this week it's minestrone. I'll be using Cobram Estate garlic infused olive oil and watching the serves of the beans and pasta to keep the fructan load OK for my sensitive tummy (note you don't need to completely avoid these, just consume at a level that manages your symptoms). What's your favourite soup?

03.01.2022 An in-depth review of Game Changers from a Professor in Sports Nutrition Science and a 21-times Ironman who has gone over the doco 3 times. If you want entertai...nment, these types of Netflix nutrition docos fit the bill, but credible science they are not. Sensationalist, cherry-picked pseudoscience is what you'll get. Fun fact: the producer of the doco is the CEO of a pea protein company. Sports dietitians fully support vegan diets and such athletes can perform just as well as other athletes, but they are not some 'game-changing' diet for sports performance unless your base is a pretty poor diet to start with and in which case, a well-planned omnivore diet would also likely give similar results.

03.01.2022 Just purchased my 2020 Passion Planner. Seriously the best business / life / reflection / motivational planner I have used. I think I'm onto my 5th year now! Last year my purchase contributed to the Save the Oceans fund, this year my purchase is helping the Mahala Fund which breaks down the barriers preventing more than 130 million girls around the world from going to school. There are other funds to support here. Any points earned through this referral link will be donated to one of the funds or gifted to someone in need.
