25.01.2022 Today's National Cabinet statement confirmed that "All states and territories have now signed the Heads of Agreement for the $1 billion Skills and JobTrainer Programme." That means more funding for VET available from September 2020 and VET reform and further additional VET funding from 2022 https://www.pmc.gov.au//dome/heads-agreement-skills-reform

25.01.2022 The latest podcast episode is out now and it was great to have Laura Hougaz join me to discuss how independent higher education providers and their entrepreneurial leaders are currently faring. Listen in your favourite podcast app or online at: https://www.buzzsprout.com/345782

24.01.2022 Two independent higher education providers receive good news from the government today - University of Notre Dame Australia becomes a Table A university meaning all undergraduate students are HECS eligible and the university receives CSP funding for all undergrad students (approx. 2,200 students benefit), plus $5 million for Campion College for an infrastructure upgrade https://ministers.dese.gov.au//additional-targeted-support

24.01.2022 Some insights on how government stimulus (including JobKeeper) has helped private tertiary education providers over the last few months - from me in today's Campus Morning Mail https://campusmorningmail.com.au//claire-field-on-jobkeep/

22.01.2022 If the Australian #EdTech sector is of interest, then don't miss the latest episode of the podcast where I spoke with David Linke from EduGrowth about what's happening in the sector. Listen online or in your favourite podcast app: https://www.buzzsprout.com/345782

22.01.2022 Loving this end of year clip from Skillsiq Ltd https://fast.wistia.net/embed/iframe/wbjo8e14f2

20.01.2022 The key business peak bodies have a significant voice on tertiary education policy matters - and closer links to the sector than is probably widely understood. Observations from me in today's Campus Morning Mail https://campusmorningmail.com.au//industry-and-education-/

19.01.2022 Great panel discussion on VET reform and the interface between VET and higher education at yesterday's AFR Higher Education Summit

19.01.2022 The Macklin Review for the Victorian government makes significant recommendations to reform the VET sector (many are aligned to the Productivity Commission's VET reform recommendations). It also has resonance for the higher education sector. Well worth a read https://campusmorningmail.com.au//claire-field-on-a-vet-re

19.01.2022 If we're going to get the next VET funding agreement right - we need more transparency and adequate levels of funding for all providers. Some of you may be surprised to see me quoted saying TAFE CEOs are public servants so they can’t speak out like university leaders do when government funding is withdrawn. They deserve a medal for just quietly getting on with it. I've never seen the VET sector as "TAFE vs private providers" and I think TAFE CEOs are doing incredibly well ...in very difficult circumstances, as are many private providers who for different reasons can't talk openly about the challenges they face. I'd like to see TAFEs and private providers working collectively to ensure VET gets more government funding in the next funding agreement. That would allow all providers more certainty in their operations - to make good longterm plans for their students and staff

18.01.2022 With a word-limit on my Campus Morning Mail column I couldn’t include everything that was in my head re the higher education reforms in last week’s column. Here’s a fuller list of the changes. Even better was the chance to chat with 3 of the best thinkers in the sector on the podcast this week about these changes https://campusmorningmail.com.au//claire-fields-second-lo/

18.01.2022 The latest episode of the podcast is out: if you're trying to understand the $1B JobTrainer scheme, the new National Skills Agreement, the role of the Productivity Commission etc - this is for you. Listen in your favourite podcast app or online at: https://www.buzzsprout.com/345782

18.01.2022 Thoughts from me in CMM this morning - what’s going on in our ‘industry-led’ VET system? https://campusmorningmail.com.au//claire-field-warns-ther/

16.01.2022 Both the VET and higher education sectors will need to do more if Australia is to meet the Closing the Gap targets. The VET sector should start by acting on the relevant Joyce Review recommendations - thoughts from me in Campus Morning Mail https://campusmorningmail.com.au//needed-a-vet-focus-on-t/

14.01.2022 It’s unclear if these students can be assisted by the Tuition Protection Service because Soar Aviation didn’t have VET Student Loans approval in its own right (it was in partnership with Box Hill TAFE) but someone needs to be helping these students https://australianaviation.com.au//we-wont-take-your-call/

14.01.2022 International students are deserving of our support as they adjust to life in Australia. Are recent criticisms of international pathways programs justified and does that mean we should have concerns about flexible entry for domestic students? Some thoughts from me in today’s CMM ... https://campusmorningmail.com.au//claire-field-on-the-hel/ See more

13.01.2022 Campus Morning Mail’s editor chose a VET reform headline for my latest piece but I’m also concerned about the interplay between VET and higher education. In addition the government’s higher education reforms will have a differential impact on different universities and will potentially open up government funding to university colleges. Successful, long-lasting tertiary education reforms consider the impact on all students and providers. That’s where we need to get to if we’re to stop treating VET and higher education funding like a political football https://campusmorningmail.com.au//claire-field-on-vet-ref/

13.01.2022 Thoughts from me on short courses in this morning's Campus Morning Mail - formal qualifications and units of competency versus industry accredited/non-accredited alternatives https://campusmorningmail.com.au//claire-field-on-the-way/

13.01.2022 The Prime Minister says COVID-19 means universities need to change their business models, as other businesses have. Some thoughts from me in today’s CMM on the changes which are being made across the sector https://campusmorningmail.com.au//the-pm-says-unis-need-t/

12.01.2022 Some thoughts from me on what we should have seen in this year’s Budget and what’s needed for our economic rebuild. Good news - since I wrote this I understand some changes have been made to better target the apprenticeship commencement subsidies https://www.theaustralian.com.au//4de6ff213b8f6a26449ff566

12.01.2022 TAFE boss reveals industry concerns about course cuts https://indaily.com.au//tafe-boss-reveals-industry-concer/

11.01.2022 This week on the podcast I’m joined by former Schwarzman Scholars, Sveto Muhammad Ishoq to discuss her education experience in China, life and study in Afghanistan, and her ongoing work for Chadari Find it in your podcast feed or at https://whatnowwhatnext.buzzsprout.com/

11.01.2022 The Productivity Commission’s advice on VET funding will shape the next Commonwealth-State funding agreement and hence VET for the next decade. Regrettably the report treats all students as one amorphous blob eg women are mentioned just 5 times in 300+ pages. My analysis for BroadAgenda 50/50 www.broadagenda.com.au/home/new-blog-post-2/

09.01.2022 International education - where are things at? Some institutions are doing well, some enrolment trends need investigating, and we need to understand the impact that different governments appear to be having on the take-up of online study by their students. Thoughts from me in Campus Morning Mail ... https://campusmorningmail.com.au//claire-field-sees-hope-/

07.01.2022 It has been a little while between episodes but this week Mike Larsen from Studiosity joins me on the podcast to discuss #EdTech and student support during COVID. Listen in your favourite podcast app or online at: https://www.buzzsprout.com/345782

07.01.2022 The latest episode of the podcast explains ‘self assurance’ in regulation. Kylie Wilson from the New Zealand School of Tourism discusses the NZ regulator's approach. It's been recommended in the ASQA Rapid Review and influenced the Joyce Review so have a listen. As ASQA moves to a new regulatory approach what might that mean for providers? Given their focus on internal audit and RTO governance I’m very pleased to have the team at Audit Express as sponsors for this episode. Listen in your favourite podcast app or online at: https://www.buzzsprout.com/345782

07.01.2022 There's so much for the Productivity Commission and VET policy makers to get their heads around when thinking about the next VET funding agreement - thoughts from me in today's Campus Morning Mail https://campusmorningmail.com.au//vet-policy-agreements-c/

07.01.2022 Another podcast episode is out and it's a (relatively) quick run through of the Productivity Commission's recommendations on VET funding plus how this fits with the Joyce & ASQA reviews. As always find it in your favourite podcast app or listen online: https://www.buzzsprout.com/345782

05.01.2022 Some thoughts from me on international education - in today's Campus Morning Mail https://campusmorningmail.com.au//claire-field-calls-for-/

04.01.2022 If you're interested in the next Commonwealth-State VET funding agreement - there's a summary on my website of the Productivity Commission's Interim Report and their recommendations for the next agreement, plus my submission to the Commission's Inquiry. 03.01.2022 The VET funding conjuring trick ... as revealed by the Victorian Auditor-General’s office. My latest in Campus Morning Mail https://campusmorningmail.com.au//vet-reform-depends-on-f/

03.01.2022 What, if anything, should the sector read into TEQSA’s varied reporting of provider registration details on the National Register? And the reason why the sector is waiting on publication of the summary report of Murdoch University’s re-registration audit. Thoughts from me in CMM today https://campusmorningmail.com.au//claire-field-on-how-teq/

03.01.2022 Rushing reform was a major mistake and TAFE NSW lacked the skills to execute. But the response to the simple audit recommendations says TAFE will need 12 months to revise its strategic vision and fix data quality/reporting issues?! The report is on the NSW Audit Office website - well worth a read Scathing review reveals TAFE's failure to meet cost savings https://www.smh.com.au//scathing-review-reveals-tafe-s-fai

03.01.2022 This week is a bumper week on the podcast with 2 episodes and 5 great guests discussing the Productivity Commission's review of VET. What are the key issues for ITECA, TDA, IHEA, CCA and ERTOA and their members? Check your podcast app or listen online: https://whatnowwhatnext.buzzsprout.com

02.01.2022 I’m preparing for an MEGT Board sub-committee meeting later this morning and look what just turned up on my doorstep. It’s been a huge year and we’re only just over the halfway point but our new CEO Bridie Gildea and her team are doing an excellent job in extraordinary times. I wanted to share their sentiments and kindness and send a shoutout to the team at MEGT and everyone who I’m connected to on Facebook as we all work our way through this incredibly difficult time

02.01.2022 Thousands of students will be locked out of careers if the AISC’s sub-committee does not step-up and work with industry on temporary changes to mandatory VET workplacements. Thoughts from me in Campus Morning Mail and a hat tip to independent provider peak body ITECA for their advocacy on this issue https://campusmorningmail.com.au//claire-field-warns-stud/
