23.01.2022 ' ? It depends! In general, if symptoms are from the neck up and mild (eg. runny nose), moderate exercise won't hurt you and might even be beneficial.... Moderate-to-vigorous exercise has been shown to enhance movement of important immune cells throughout the body, and may help you fight off infections. If your symptoms are more severe, particularly below the neck (eg. chest congestion, fever, muscle aches, gut symptoms), resting is recommended to avoid dehydration and preserve energy for the fight! https://ab.co/2WDg243

18.01.2022 This is the reading on the 'Sh**t! I Smoke!' app in Southbank this morning! It's a nifty little app that converts local air pollution to the surprising equivalent level of cigarette inhalation. Australia's clear air standard is a PM2.5 level of eight micrograms per cubic metre. By comparison, smoking a single cigarette produces 20 micrograms per cubic metre. Melbourne CBD’s smoke particle pollution was when it peaked at 412 earlier i...n the week. I's not all bad news though! Dr Hughes of Australian Institute of Sport said the smoke levels in south-east Australia were dangerous, but they would not cause the same long-term health problems as air pollution in countries like India and China. "Generally speaking, the smoke from burning, even though it is not good for our health, is less harmful than industrial pollution," he said. The best advice is to minimise your time outdoors. Try to opt for exercising indoors and consider wearing a P2 face mask if you have a pre-existing breathing condition, are young or elderly, or if you are pregnant. #osteo #osteopath #southbank #melbourne #airquality #bushfiresaustralia #health #fitness

If you’re new to lifting weights, professional guidance on progressive loading will give your body a chance to build strength and tolerance to avoid injury.

11.01.2022 Last week Catalyst explored the effects of HIIT exercise on cell physiology through slowing down the ageing process of mitochondria within cells. Check out 74-year old Peter at the start of this video who has dropped his physiological age to 58 despite significant osteoarthritis - what a champ!

06.01.2022 What Is An Osteopath? A common question I get asked at BBQ's This is the short answer.... The long answer is that osteopaths study a 5 year double degree at university. We learn anatomy, pathology, radology- all the -ologies! When we see a patient, we take an injury history, perform a physical assessment, explain our diagnosis and come up with a treatment & management plan to get you feeling better! What makes osteopaths different to other therpapists such as physio's and chiro's is our philosophies. We believe everything in the body is connected. We believe your body is capable of healing (with a gentle push in the right direction from us!). We use these principles to help guide our treatment, combined with the latest evidence on what strategies work best. Have we got you interested? Come see me in Southbank and find out what an osteopath can do for you! #osteopath #osteo #osteopathy #southbank #melbourne #health #fitness

05.01.2022 So I just got back from New Zealand and am on day 3 of my 14 days of self-isolation. It's a pain, but we've all got to do our bit to slow down the spread of COVID-19 As I'm obviously not allowed to go to the gym, this morning I downloaded the free @fitonapp and loved it! Plenty of at-home work outs with different workout styles including HIIT, dance, cardio, strength, pilates and yoga.... Why should you exercise in isolation? It's good for your immune system! Studies have found that participating in 1-2 hours of moderate exercise per day was associated with a one third reduction in the risk of getting a upper respiratory tract infection compared with individuals that had an inactive lifestyle (Nieman et al. 2011). While we are still learning about COVID-19, keeping yourself strong and healthy certainly couldn't hurt! Head to the app store and check it out to keep you busy during isolation

01.01.2022 Spring has sprung, the daylight is lasting longer and we're feeling more motivated to hit the gym. But a common concern from our patients is not knowing what exercises are 'safe'. They're worried about causing an injury that might prevent them from working, keep them from sleeping or even require surgery. This is especially common in patients who have had a previous injury and know what a lengthy process recovery can sometimes be. I understand your uncertainty - there's ...A LOT of information out there about what exercises are good/bad/safe/unsafe/cool/uncool. That's why I'am here. I can help guide your increase in physical activity to minimise the likelihood of injuries. The truth is, regular physical activity will keep you strong, keep you healthy and PREVENT injuries. You've just got to know where to start!
