25.01.2022 So I love using visuals schedules . Then everyone knows what is expected and what is coming next . I find with all kids it helps improve compliance and reduce anxiety . So here is another type of visual schedule to show what is coming next. Use the actual object to show younger kids the planned activities . Here they were used as planned movement breaks between a tricky assessment task .

24.01.2022 On World Mental Health Day (10/10) it is important to appreciate that speech pathologists improve a person’s communication and swallowing skills so they can fun...ction physically, socially and mentally at home, in the classroom, in the workplace, in social situations and in mental health treatment programs. Speech pathologists are an important part of the mental health team. Speech pathologists diagnose communication and swallowing disorders and, as part of the mental health team, can play an important role in diagnosing mental illnesses. They also help to determine whether communication or swallowing difficulties are part of the current mental health issue or whether there is an underlying communication/ swallowing disorder. They then develop appropriate targets to help overcome difficulties and help the person understand and participate in their treatment. 13.01.2022 I am happy to be talking to the New Prep parents at Mission Beach Prep Open Day this Thursday. This article explains why it is not just the amount that we talk to kids but the quality of the back and forth interaction that is important . https://www.weforum.org//how-you-talk-to-your-child-chan/

10.01.2022 Back to school can be a tricky time. Teachers need to learn about the needs of so many little people in order to work out how they learn best. This free download is a great template for kids with DLD ( Developmental Language Disorder) or previously known as SLI ( Specific Language Impairment) or other communication difficulties. Hope day one went ok and remember.... down time will be required this afternoon!

10.01.2022 Happy DLD Awareness Day Better late than never

06.01.2022 Crying is a healthy and necessary way of expressing our feelings. All feelings are valid. Telling a child to stop crying does not help them; and it certainly do...esn’t make the feeling go away (that’s not the goal anyway - the goal is to ride the emotional wave with them). Telling a child to stop crying sends them the message that they should not express how they’re feeling, which is the opposite of what we want to teach them. We want children to know that they should always feel comfortable expressing their emotions and feelings. Image via Happiness is here

03.01.2022 So sweet !! This little guy is loving spending time with his daddy. Dads have a special (usually louder, more active, boisterous) way of engaging with babies and toddlers than most mums. But this rough and tumble, active play is so amazing for buidling strong attachment and connection that is the basis of all communication. Happy Fathers Day weekend for all the amazing dads! Hope you all get spoilt!
