24.01.2022 Nervous Fatigue is an audio talk by Dr Claire Weekes. This is a very short talk, but Dr Weekes considered this to be so important that she wanted it to stand alone. With the support of Dr Weekes many of the symptoms of nervous illness are overcome. By understanding and learning how to cure the basic causes, such as emotional, mental and muscular fatigue, you realise that total recovery is a realistic outcome.

21.01.2022 If you feel guilty because you think you could have treated someone now dead more kindly (as the writers of some letters have complained), be consoled. Many suffer that way. It's all too easy to forget the difficult tasks accomplished and remember only your short irritable replies, the snappy rejoinders. Nerves become sensitized by constant, small irritations; it's difficult to take constant irritations, although small, perhaps year after year. People are lucky who have no sp...ecial duty that subjects them to such a trial. Men are usually luckier than women, because too often it's the daughter or sister especially the unmarried woman who fulfils the family obligations, particularly to elderly parents. It is the daughter's or sister's nerves that become sensitized, her patience sometimes at breaking point and her conscience later involved. She is so much more likely to remember what she failed to do, or did not do well, than the demanding work she accomplished. As I said earlier, she should try to be compassionate towards herself and remember that at least she took the burden. This I find this extract from Agoraphobia very apt. It applies to anyone feeling guilt about letting down someone they care about. 'At least she took the burden'

16.01.2022 Brilliant article about Dr Claire Weekes in today’s Sydney Morning Herald, Good Weekend. Written by Judith Hoare.

16.01.2022 Anxiety is closely related to fear. The difference between them is one of timing as well as intensity. For instance, in an acute emergency - such as facing an immediate danger - we would say we were afraid, whereas when contemplating a threatening future even we would say we were anxious rather than afraid. The term 'anxious' comes from the Latin anxius meaning being upset about some future uncertain happening. So, literally, being in an anxiety state should mean being in a condition of prolonged anxiety. However, in practice, a person in an anxiety state is both anxious and afraid and is very often particularly afraid of his nervous symptoms. 14.01.2022 So excited about the launch of this wonderful book about the life of my Great Aunt, Dr Claire Weekes! The Woman Who Cracked the Anxiety Code, by Judith Hoare. ...Claire was an incredible woman who, during her life, and after her death, has helped so many people to overcome mental heath issues. She was ahead of her time and a true trailblazer, doctor to many and Auntie to a few. Thank you Judith for choosing Claire for your subject matter and for acknowledging how important her work still is. Wishing you much success with the book! See more

06.01.2022 I have said so often that peace lies on the other side of panic: now I shout it. By going through panic to the other side you earn the little voice that says, 'It doesn't matter if any more panic comes!' This is the only voice to listen to. It is your staff, and will always come to help in setbacks, even if you find yourself almost helpless on the floor. As it lifts you up, you will feel again that the dreaded bogey no longer matters. As this realisation strengthens, courage returns and you once more find the confidence to practise utter, utter acceptance - perhaps even more willingly. Acceptance comes from throwing away the gun and letting the tiger come if he wants to. It sounds terrible, doesn't it? Incredible that cure can lie in such a dangerous procedure; but it does. 06.01.2022 There has been a change to the subtitle of the book by Judith Hoare. This reflects the many different facets of Dr Weekes' life. Happy reading. Frances Maclaren

04.01.2022 These are some of the most strange and upsetting times that we are all living through at the moment. Understandably so many of us are feeling anxious as we face the unkown. The excerpt below is from "Complete Self Help For Your Nerves" (Page 127) by Dr Claire Weekes. PLAYING THE RECORD... The person with the absorbing problem thinks about it more and more, until every waking moment is spent in thought and his mind rests only when asleep - and then only if peacefully asleep, which is rarely. Such continuous preoccupation with a small group of ideas has been likened to playing the same record ceaselessly. In the beginning the sufferer can work with the record playing in the background. But gradually it comes between him and his work, between him and his reading, between him and making contact with other people. It takes control of his mind. It becomes his mind. He used to be able to say, 'I won't think of that for a while,' and dismiss the unwanted subject with some success. Now, however how hard he tries to get this thing off his mind, he cannot. The harder he fights the more it clings. In other words, his tired mind has lost it's resilience and thoughts race on automatically.

03.01.2022 Great news! A book on the life of Dr. Weekes will be available from September. It is a fascinating story of the many facets of her life. Written by Australian journalist Judith Hoare, whose mother was greatly helped by Dr Weekes, as have many, many other people. Fascinating reading!
