24.01.2022 JAMES MACDONALD (1765-1840), NAPOLEON’S GENERAL and MARSHAL OF FRANCE James or Jacques MacDonald was born in Sedan in France in 1765, the son of Neil MacEachan... MacDonald, a Jacobite exile from South Uist and a relation of Flora MacDonald, who assisted in the escape of Prince Charles Edward Stuart after the failure of the 1745 rising. MacDonald grew up in France and In 1785 joined the Irish legion raised to support the revolutionary party in the Dutch Republic against the Kingdom of Prussia. After this regiment was disbanded, he was commissioned in Dillon’s regiment in the French army. At the start of the French Revolution, MacDonald joined the revolutionary party and was appointed aide-de-camp to General Charles Dumouriez, serving with distinction at the Battle of Jemappes, as a result of which he was promoted to Colonel in 1793. When Dumouriez deserted to the Austrians, MacDonald stayed loyal to France, and was made general of brigade, and appointed to a major command in the French invasion of the Netherlands, where his knowledge of the country proved useful, and where he played a significant role in the capture of the Dutch fleet by French hussars. In 1797, having been made general of division, he served first in the army of the Rhine and later in that of Italy where he occupied Rome and was made governor by Napoleon Bonaparte. After this, he served as one of the commanders of the army that defeated the Austrian General Mack, and conquered the Kingdom of Naples. When the Russian General Suvorov invaded northern Italy, MacDonald moved northwards, and with 36,000 men, attacked Suvorov's army at the Trebbia. After three days' fighting, he was defeated and fled to Genoa. Later he was made governor of Versailles, and he accepted, though did not participate in, Bonaparte’s takeover of the French government in the 18 Brumaire. In 1800, he received command of the army in the Helvetic Republic or Switzerland, and on his later return to Paris, appointed French ambassador to Denmark, from where he returned to France in 1805. He remained without employment until 1809, but then Napoleon made him military adviser to Prince de Beauharnais, viceroy of the Kingdom of Italy. He later led the army from Italy to join with Napoleon, and at the battle of Wagram, he led the attack which broke the Austrian centre and won the victory. As a reward, Napoleon made him a Marshal of France on the field of battle, and also created him Duke of Taranto in the Kingdom of Naples. In 1810, MacDonald served in Spain and in 1812, he commanded the left wing of the Grande Armée for the invasion of Russia. In 1813, after participating in the battles of Lützen and Bautzen, he was ordered to invade Silesia, where the Prussian General Blücher defeated him. At the Battle of Nations in 1813, his force was pushed out at Liebertwolkwitz by the Austrians, and on a counterattack, his troops took the village back. Later that day, the Austrian General Klenau foiled his attempt to flank the Austrian main army. After the Battle of Leipzig, he was ordered to cover the evacuation of Leipzig with the Polish Prince Poniatowski. After the blowing up of the last bridge over the river, he managed to swim the Elster, but Poniatowski drowned. In 1814, he was one of the marshals sent by Napoleon to take the notice of his abdication to Paris. When all were deserting Napoleon, MacDonald remained faithful, but he was directed by Napoleon to give his adherence to the new regime of King Louis XVIII. At the Restoration, he was made a peer of France by King Louis and remained faithful to the new government during the events of Napoleon’s escape from Elba and the Hundred Days. In 1815, he became chancellor of the Legion of Honour. In 1825, he visited South Uist, to discover more about his Scottish family origins. From 1830, he lived in retirement at his country estate at Courcelles-le-Roi, where he died on 25 September 1840, aged 74.

11.01.2022 Thank you to Graham and Sue at Scots in Spirit for the following: Robert Burns died on 21 July 1796 - he was only 37. He was buried in the churchyard of St. Michael's Churchyard in Dumfries, initially in a corner with just a plain stone slab marking his grave. It was not until 1817 that his body was moved to the beautiful mausoleum pictured above. There is even a connection between Burns and New Zealand - his nephew Dr Thomas Burns was one of Dunedin’s founding fathers durin...g Scottish settlement there. The second significant Scottish date this week is 25 July, the date of the Union of the Crowns of Scotland and England in 1603, with the coronation of James VI of Scotland also as James I of England and Ireland, succeeding his cousin Elizabeth I. For additional brief details about these topics, see the latest Scots in Spirit blog here You may also like to check a new product - we have added a range of Clan Crested Rings to our Clan Collection.
