11.01.2022 Scottish Gaelic singer Karen Matheson and her partner Donald Shaw perform the beautiful Scottish ballad ‘Far an Robh Mi'n Raoir’ (Where l was last night). Karen and Donald were meant to be touring Australia this year...singing in splendid isolation during the time of Covid. Where I was last night No-one in the world knows... where I was last night, Only Mairi Ailein was with me where I was last night; I got a promise from my girl - a mouth that would not speak deception In a nice little wooded glen where I was last night. The birds were singing joyfully where I was last night, and were dancing on top of the branches where I was last night. A fragrant scent of dew and honey from every spot in the grove, The smoke and dirt of the town were not where I was last night. There was no need for sun or moon where I was last night, Above the trees spreading over us where I was last night; With my love who has the thinnest eyebrows I stayed for part of the night amongst the beautiful white daisies where I was last night. There wasn't a thought of wealth or property where I was last night Treasure and gold weren't on my mind where I was last night; And there was never a castle in the world however fine looking and beauteous For which I would leave the birch bower where I was last night. I will remember as long as I live the place where I was last night, And the maid from whom I got a promise where I was last night; Until I am buried in the winding sheet no blemish or falsehood will come To my love for Mairi Ailein and for where I was last night.
09.01.2022 Researchers from the University of Edinburgh and RCSI (Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland) analysed genomic data of 2,544 British and Irish people, specifically focusing on those whose parents lived just 50 miles apart. They found that Scotland is divided into at least six groups of genetically similar individuals, who cluster together geographically: the Borders, the south-west, the north-east, the Hebrides, Orkney and Shetland. Most Matheson ancestry lies in the Hebrides cluster... https://www.rcsi.com//researchers-connect-irish-and-scotti
