21.01.2022 This week's Lighten the Load from Dr Justin Coulson's Happy Families is just one simple thought. To be in your children's memories tomorrow, you have to be in their lives today. (Barbara Johnson) If there was one thing you could do to be positively involved in your children's lives today, what would it be? Take the time to make tomorrow's memories today.

16.01.2022 Wonderful tips from Dr Justin Coulson from our membership with him Lighten the Load In recent times I've been struck by an anonymous quote I came across:... When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change. This idea comes from mindfulness practice and it's usually about changing the way we look at stress in our lives, making things less stressful in the process. However, I think it has even more powerful application for raising children. When we change the way we look at our children, the children we're looking at change. Here's what I mean: Let's say you're regularly looking at your child with annoyance, frustration, and accusation. It's most likely that she'll feel judged, unworthy, and threatened. As such, her behaviour will be challenging, defensive, even aggressive. But what if we practiced looking at her with compassion, patience, and love? What if our eyes were soft, our tone of voice, gentle, and our words, kind? The result may not be immediate, but I suspect that by changing the way we look at her, she might sense our shift and literally change before our eyes as she begins to feel safe, secure, and loved, no matter what. This week, when you feel like looking at your children in a less-than-charitable way, change the way you look at them. Bring them close rather than pushing them away. I have a feeling it will be all the change you need.

03.01.2022 It was an honour to represent CLAN at NAIDOC Day in Ellenbrook. It was also a wonderful experience for my 6 year old son to be immersed in the Aboriginal culture and learn about smoking ceremonies from Vaughn and his amazing sons. We learnt about the history of the land in Ellenbrook and that it’s original name means the ‘land of looking.’ I’m sure NAIDOC week in Ellenbrook is only going to get bigger! Always was, Always will be.... ~Sharon~

01.01.2022 Another wonderful tip from Dr Justin Coulson from our membership with him. Lighten the load Do you know how it feels to talk to someone who isn't really paying attention? They're kind of half in and half out of the conversation. They're 'there', but they're not really there?... There is very little we can do that is more important than truly connecting with our children. When we connect we show that they matter. We show we value them. We show that they belong. We show that we love them. It's actually easier to do than you might think, and my guess is that you can do it today if you try. Next time your child wants to talk with you - about anything at all - stop, look, and listen. Stop what you're doing. Literally stop. Put it down. Put it away. Stop moving. Look them in the eyes. Focus on them. Really see your child. Listen. And not just to the words. Listen to their heart. Listen to their yearnings. Listen to the way that they long for your attention, acknowledgement, and approval in everything they share with you. Connect. It doesn't need to take long - and it builds them in powerful ways. Because... if they know that they matter to you, then they know they matter.
