24.01.2022 Little Winifred wins our bravest Pet award this month! Winnie was diagnosed with Short Ulnar syndrome when she was 4 months old at Claremont Vets. The growth plates in both distal ulnas had closed early causing a deformity of her front legs that was in turn causing pain in her elbows. She was referred to the Murdoch Animal Hospital for specialist surgery to cut the ulnas and remove a centimeter of bone from each foreleg. The hope is that this will allow her radius (the other bone in her forelegs) to grow normally and correct the deformity to some extent. Winnie was able to walk on her legs within hours of waking up from the procedure. Sadly, there is already evidence of arthritis in her elbows and Winnie will need long term management. So brave Winnie

22.01.2022 Princess Molly is the perfect example of fantastic team work. Molly ruptured the Anterior cruciate ligament in her knee. The injury was diagnosed at Claremont Vets and required specialist surgical intervention. The surgeons at Murdoch University Veterinary Hospital performed a Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy or TPLO. Post-op, Molly's dedicated owner and physiotherapist Paws to Play have worked tirelessly to get Molly back on her leg. To keep Molly close to home, all Molly's aftercare has been performed at Claremont Vets. GP, Specialist, Physiotherapist, Owner and of course patient! The perfect TEAM!

21.01.2022 Is there anything worse than cat wee?? I think not! Why does your feline friend wee where you don't want it to wee?? https://www.australiancatlover.com//cat-toileting-issues-u

17.01.2022 Breed of the Week . Share pics of your prized Schnauzer! We see heaps of Mini Schnauzers at Claremont Vets. They are gorgeous little dogs, full of spunk, attitude, and energy! We are also seeing an increasing number of Schnoodles (Schnauzer x Poodles)- also divine little doggos! One condition we commonly see in this breed and their crosses is Hyperlipidemia or Hypertriglyceridemia. If you have a Schnauzer or a Schnauzer cross, it is worth having a conversation with your vet regarding this condition in an attempt to avoid it rather than treat it.
17.01.2022 Gorgeous Briana had her second Vestibular Episode this week. Despite being distressing for both the owner and the pet, often this condition will resolve spontaneously with lots of love and support from the owner and veterinary attention to rule out more sinister causes. Vestibular disease causes varying degrees of balance loss and is usually seen in geriatric dogs around the age of 10. Bravo to Bri and her Mum! https://www.australiandoglover.com//idiopathic-vestibular-

16.01.2022 This is a great video teaching you how to train your dog to "leave it". This command is great to prevent dogs from eating things while off lead that are either poisonous or going to make them feel unwell. Don't be put off by the need to create an account. It is free and this site (Fear Free Happy Homes) has some fantastic information. Happy training! https://fearfreehappyhomes.com//teach-your-dog-to-leave-i/
14.01.2022 Meet Millie the Norwich Terrier. I have looked after Millie since she was a puppy in Exmouth and Carnarvon. She is now 10 years old and her family has moved to Perth so I get to look after her again. Such a treat to follow my patients from puppyhood to old(er) age!
14.01.2022 Happy happy Mothers Day to all the amazing mummas out there. There is no greater gift! Enjoy the sunshine #furmum #vetsofperth #petsofperth #mothersday #mums
14.01.2022 Have you got some good ideas to keep your indoor cats amused and active? Love these "swimming fish" toys but be aware that they do have batteries in them so I would recommend always supervising your cat while playing with any toys with batteries.
12.01.2022 The level of treat desperation increases as you swipe. My personal fav is the last one #vetsofinstagram #vetsofperth #dogsofperth #petsofperth #dogsofinstagram #claremont #claremonttowncentre #dachshundsofinstagram #beagaliersofinstagram

10.01.2022 When you bring in your pups for desexing around 6-9 months, we will check for Persistent Deciduous Teeth as seen in this picture. We strongly recommend that all deciduous teeth are removed as they commonly direct an erupting permanent tooth/teeth into an abnormal position and are prone to tartar accumulation and gum inflammation. Commonly affected breeds include toy breeds such as Yorkshire Terrier, Maltese, Toy Poodle, Chihuahuas and their crosses. Removal involves a quick x-ray to assess the root of the tooth, a gum flap, CAREFUL removal of the entire tooth and root (often very delicate) and suturing of the gum. It is a common problem we see BUT is easily fixed.
09.01.2022 2 of my favourite things - Art and Animals! Very interesting
08.01.2022 This lovely girl came in for desexing BUT as we were intubating her, I noticed a stick lodged across the roof of her mouth! She was amazingly calm about the stick and the owner had no idea! So I guess she was just lucky to be desexed on that particular day.
07.01.2022 No one loves their indoor plants more than me! Ok - Brooke is also a massive indoor plant lover and this weekend she (and her 10-month-old black Labrador puppy - Ella) were able to test the toxic plant theory first hand! Eating mums ficus is a BAD idea!! Luckily, no permanent damage but a nasty dose of diarrhoea and vomiting! Poor Ella!!
07.01.2022 What do you do on your weekends?? Our amazing groomer Kumiko loves nothing more than to take Diesel and Yuki out Sledding. Sound crazy to you?? She is crazy!! But both she and the dogs LOVE it. She often has skin off on Mondays but always has incredible stories to tell and a massive cheeky smile. Check out https://www.wassa.com.au/ for more details.
06.01.2022 Even Vet Nurse's pets eat things they shouldn't!! Brooke's 5 month old Lab Puppy Ella, accidently swallowed a drill bit this week. An injection and a power vomit sorted her out! What's the worse thing your dog has eaten??? #petsofperth #vetsofperth #dogsofperth #vetnursespets #naughtylabradors #foreignbody #townofclaremont
06.01.2022 Naughty Missy found a full bottle of Neurofen a couple of weeks ago and ingested 40 times the toxic dose for her weight!! A heroic effect from Missy's Mum, Drs Gina and Libby, our amazing nurses and the Animal Emergency Centre has resulted in Missy making a full recovery! Missy happily showed Aimee how grateful she was for all her love and care! NB Pets love the sugary coating on Neurofen tablets so please be aware. Missy managed to get through a child proof container to get to the tablets.
06.01.2022 This lovely 1-year-old dog has a condition called Base Narrow Canines. This is a painful condition as the lower canines strike the roof of the mouth (palate). The upper jaw (maxilla) is wider than the lower jaw (mandible). Base narrow canine teeth can occur in any breed. This condition can affect young puppies when the deciduous teeth erupt too narrow and contact the palate. More commonly this condition affects young adults at 6 months of age, when the lower permanent canine teeth erupt in an upright orientation. The adult canine teeth will eventually strike the palate causing pain. We recommend consulting with a specialist veterinary dentist in an attempt to save the canine tooth rather than removing it.

04.01.2022 More and more city slickers are choosing historically rural working dogs as their treasured pets. It is always important to research whatever breed you are considering as your new pet but this is even more important if you are considering a high energy and intelligent Kelpie. Please share your experiences and suggestions when considering a Kelpie for city life. https://www.australiandoglover.com//australian-kelpie-bree
03.01.2022 Don't forget!! June is the month to stock up on your Advocate!!

01.01.2022 Today I was asked whether COVID-19 could be spread on our pet's fur. This article provides some useful information about how to manage time with our pets if we are unlucky enough to get COVID-19. The good news is the evidence suggests it is unlikely that you can contract COVID-19 off your pet's fur. https://www.uchealth.org//covid-19-and-pets-what-you-shou/
01.01.2022 It's hard to believe that Snoopy will be 17 years of age in September this year! She is doing incredibly well for a lass of her vintage! Her favourite thing about coming to the vet is the never-ending Pure Pets treats and today, as Brooke is holding those treats, Brooke is the 2nd best thing about coming to the vets!!
01.01.2022 Great news to hear that vets have been considered an essential service in WA. We will be here for your pets and you through these difficult times. Please help us to keep COVID-19 out of Claremont Vet Hospital. We know it's all a bit odd having to wait outside and not be with your pets during their consult but we are doing all we can to make sure we stay well and all our clients stay well. Please bare with us!

01.01.2022 GRASS SEED SEASON HAS ARRIVED!! Grass seeds are a common problem, particularly during the summer months. They are attached to the tops of long grass stems and can easily brush off onto your dog during walks. Although tiny, they have the potential to cause real pain to your dog. The seeds have pointy ends and are very sharp so they easily become trapped in a dog’s fur and can burrow down the coat to pierce the skin. Unfortunately, in rare cases, the grass seed can go under the... skin and travel to other areas of the body. They have even been known to end up in the lungs via inhalation of a seed or a seed travelling through the skin into the lung tissue. The seeds can also get stuck in eyes and ears. Once they start traveling around the body they can be very difficult to find. They also carry nasty bacteria causing infection and pain. Look out for discharging lumps between toes and visit the vet ASAP if your dog is shaking their head. As always, prevention is best - keep long hair around feet and ears trimmed and check long-coated pets regularly. See more
