23.01.2022 Firstly, from the team, we hope you had a Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year! We are now back on board for 2020 and looking forward to a great year! We have some great news for everyone! We have secured our new Podiatrist starting in two weeks. We are very excited to welcome Cassie to the team since Bernadette, our well-loved former owner retired at the end of the year. We are looking forward to establishing Claremont Podiatry as a leader in podiatric care across a number of specialty areas including sports, biomechanical, orthotics, routine foot care, and childrens feet. "I graduated in 2014 from the University of Western Sydney with a Bachelor in Health Science/ Masters in Podiatric Medicine. Ive been living and working in Cairns, Northern Queensland for the past 4 years, prior to relocating here to Hobart. I enjoy being able to meet wonderful people and help them with their foot-related problems with a holistic approach to podiatric treatments. Im passionate about my profession and thorough with my skills to provide podiatry care to all ages from complex foot injury to routine podiatry needs. When Im not treating feet, you would find me out and about with my beautiful big dogs, exploring nature or playing the guitar. Then when footy season comes around, Im not too far from watching the game (Go the Lions!) or helping out a local team as a sports trainer. I look forward to meeting the lovely members of the community that attend Claremont Podiatry. "

21.01.2022 ANKLE SPRAINS AND REHAB. ITS A MUST! It is the most common sports injury to the human body! In the majority of cases the ankle rolls inwards (inversion) under the weight of the rest of the body, damage results when the ligaments cannot withstand the stress of this rapid movement. Ligaments are strong, fibrous tissues that connect bones to other bones and keep them in the right position. An ankle sprain can range from mild to severe, depending on the damage to the ligaments.... Most sprains are minor injuries that will heal with rest and applying ice but if you find that you have significant swelling, severe pain and an inability to walk it is best to seek professional advice. While the pain can subside in as little as a few days to a few weeks, re-injury is a common complaint experienced by people that have sprained their ankle. Just because there is no pain doesnt mean everything is back to normal, Ligaments heal slowly because they are poorly supplied with blood vessels, so understanding this is important. For moderate to severe injuries it can take up to a few months for ligaments to heal, sometimes they will never be as strong as they were prior to injury, we need to consider what deficits you may be left with? Do you have instability or weakness? Poor ankle flexibility? Surrounding soft tissue injury? A rehab plan with appropriate exercise prescription to improve mobility, stability and proprioception of the ankle joint with appropriate loading is an important facet to returning people to sport and exercise. If you have had one or many ankle sprains, Try this; Stand on one leg; balance Now close your eyes for 20 seconds, do this left and right How stable are you? Do you have any major differences?

18.01.2022 A common stretch we regularly prescribe of the gastrocnemius and soleus (calf muscles). This stretch can help many conditions such as plantar fasciitis, ankle & forefoot pain. Hold for 60 seconds minimum each leg x 4 daily for a nice stretch of those often tight calve muscles. Exercise therapy plays a large role in the rehabilitation of many foot, ankle and lower limb problems. Our Podiatrists are fully trained to provide a holistic, multi-centred treatment plans to best resolve those aches and pains that may be bothering.
18.01.2022 A nice message from Nick Kuncio, Podiatrist and new owner of Claremont Podiatry... "Big News! I have officially taken over Claremont Podiatry, in Hobart, Tasmania established for over 20 years in the Northern Suburbs of Hobart. I am sure there will be many challenges along the way but I feel immensely prepared for everything that this next adventure throws at me from the many great people that I have come into contact with over the last 10 years of my career! You know who you are! I am looking forward to helping the community and continuing to uphold the strong reputation of the clinic after Bernadette Nicholls, who retired after 30 years of practicing in Hobart. A big thank you to my family, my partner and everyone close to me that has helped me along the way."
17.01.2022 We are taking a number of protective and preventative measures at the clinic regarding Covid 19! We have been given much needed direction from a number of organisations including WHO, AMA & The Australian Podiatry Association. If youre not sure why cancelling events and self-quarantining is important then this is a graph that shows why. These measures reduce the sudden burden on the health care system and allow those that really need the care to access it. ... Its not so much about preventing people from getting sick but slowing the spread of the disease
15.01.2022 RUNNING SHOE FITTING TIPS Shoe fit is one of the most important yet undervalued aspects in the selection of a running shoe. The running shoe market has intensified over the last 20 years with shoe brands constantly touting the latest in footwear technology in the hopes of improved comfort, performance and injury prevention. Footwear is the main interface between the foot and the environment. It alters input signals, altering forces from the ground to the foot and further u...p the kinetic chain. Correctly fitted and prescribed shoes suitable for the demands placed on your body specific to the activity is vital. OUR 6 FITTING TIPS; Your foot size can still change as you go through adulthood so occasionally re-assessing your true size is beneficial. Generally a thumb nail space gap between the end of shoe and your foot is a good starting point whilst making sure the shoe accommodates your whole foot without too much overall tightness. In most cases one foot will be longer than the other and it is important to fit to the longest foot. Go by what fits, not what size the shoe is. The correct size shoe for you is the one that fits and that is not always going to be the same size every time. The way the shoe is constructed will ultimately determine how the shoe fits and it is important to consider what brands and styles of shoe that have worked well in the past. It is important to try a few different sizes, brands and models for comparison. What works for one person may not work for you. If you currently have foot, ankle, leg, knee pain or injury dont overlook footwear as an important factor to why it may be occurring.

14.01.2022 Podiatrist Top Tips for Diabetics Diabetes can be dangerous to your feeteven a small cut can produce serious consequences. Diabetes may cause nerve damage that takes away the feeling in your feet. Diabetes may also reduce blood flow to the feet, making it harder to heal an injury or resist infection. Because of these problems, you may not notice a foreign object in your shoe. As a result, you could develop a blister or a sore. This could lead to an infection or a nonhealing... wound that could put you at a high risk. To avoid serious foot problems follow these 7 tips Inspect your feet daily. Check for cuts, blisters, redness, swelling or nail problems. Use a magnifying hand mirror to look at the bottom of your feet. Report any changes to your Podiatrist or Doctor. Use a moisturizer daily to keep dry skin from itching or cracking. Cut nails carefully. Cut them straight across and file the edges. Dont cut nails too short, as this could lead to ingrown toenails. Or come and see our friendly Podiatrists to ensure your footcare is safe and minimize complications. Never treat corns or calluses yourself. No bathroom surgery or medicated pads. Visit your one of our Podiatrist for appropriate treatment. Wear clean, dry socks. Change them daily. Consider socks made specifically for patients living with diabetes. These socks have extra cushioning, do not have elastic tops, are higher than the ankle and are made from fibers that wick moisture away from the skin. Shake out your shoes and feel the inside before wearing. Remember, your feet may not be able to feel a pebble or other foreign object, so always inspect your shoes before putting them on. Take care of your diabetes. Keep your blood sugar levels under control. Get annual diabetic foot check ups by seeing your Podiatrist, to help prevent complications of diabetes.
13.01.2022 BUNIONS, FOOTWEAR & FOREFOOT PAIN The foot is a unique and complex structure, with numerous bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments. Feet come in many shapes and sizes, and correct shoes that adequately fit your foot is often undervalued but very important in optimal foot function thus reducing the likelihood of pain and injury. This is an excellent video showing us firstly a bunion deformity through an X-RAY image of the foot. This shows exactly what a bunion is! A mal...alignment of the bones in your foot and poor footwear choices in some people is a component in its formation! A bunion deformity increases your likelihood of forefoot pain and problems with shoe fitting due to widening of the front of your foot and changes in your biomechanics. This video also shows us new technology giving us the ability to see the position of the foot and skeletal bones in certain footwear. We can see the foot structure in this high heel shoe and it is easy to see the considerable amount of stress that may put on the ball of your foot. The more abnormal stress on the ball of your foot the increased likelihood of bunions, pain and injury. A 1 inch heel increases forefoot stress by 22% A 2 inch by 57 % And a 3 inch by 76 % Selecting good shoes that fit well is not always going to be the same for everyone thats why we recommend a number of shoe shops for women which have a great selection of comfortable, functional footwear. It is important to try a few different sizes, brands and models for comparison and be guided by professional staff at a store. So what is the perfect shoe you ask? There is no perfect shoe, your foot is unique to you and ultimately the focus should be on finding what works for the individual at hand. Be mindful of what purpose the shoe will have for you whether thats for work or for exercise, or for casual use. People who currently have pain, previous history of foot injury and/or atypical foot shapes may require input by a podiatrist for diangosis, injury management and a more guided fitting and shoe selection advice. Claremont Podiatry is a modern, private podiatry clinic covering all aspects of podiatric care from routine to more complex foot, ankle and lower injury. Call our friendly reception team on (03) 6249 1155 to make a booking.
12.01.2022 One of our podiatrists Nick, who headed to France to spend time at the headquarters of the innovative Salomon footwear. Great insight into the technical aspects of the design and development of athletic and trail shoes. Footwear is the main interface between the foot and the environment. It alters input signals, altering forces from the ground to the foot and further up the kinetic chain. Correctly fitted and prescribed shoes suitable for the demands placed on your body specific to the activity is vital.
12.01.2022 ORTHOTICS DESIGN Orthotics can be a vital part of the treatment of foot, ankle and lower limb musculoskeletal problems. Here we have two quite different left and right orthotics BUT for the same person. ... You can see that the geometry or shape is quite different! This is a custom device which after a full assessment we have carefully written a prescription to change the biomechanical function of the foot and lower limb. This patient has some quite significant biomechanical challenges on the left that we have had to consider in the prescription. What do we consider with custom orthoses therapy; Step 1) Assess / Biomechanical Assessment; consider a patient-specific treatment plan aimed at addressing the identified causes; This may include orthotic therapy but generally always other strategies; rehab, strength work, physio input etc. Step 2) Capture a 3D Foot Scan of the foot shape and structure Step 3) Prescribe; After spending time understanding your function, pain, activity and footwear we prescribe a completely tailored device. Step 4) Orthoses Fitting; an essential step to ensure the orthotics are achieving what they are supposed to do and a discussion about how these are implemented into your treatment plan and daily shoe wear.

11.01.2022 ACHILLES TENDON PAIN Tag someone who has an Achilles problem needing fixing! The Achilles tendon is a thick cord of connective tissue that attaches your calve muscle (gastrocnemius, soleus) to your heel bone (calcaneus). It is the largest and strongest tendon in the body and essential for every step you take. Just hopping on the one foot will generate forces up to 500 kgs, thats a huge amount of force per hop.... As strong and durable as they are, they are like any part of the body and still can be prone to injury, the extent of that injury can sometimes be disastrous, In some occasions the tendon can rupture in an acute situation, The tendon can rupture fully or partially which needs immediate medical attention and potentially surgical intervention. There are other types of Achilles injuries that are a little bit more subtle, without a serious traumatic event such as a rupture. Two common problems that can occur; Achilles Tendonitis; An acute inflammation of the tendon that can come about quite quickly, swelling in and around the tendon is apparent. Usually can be quite painful. Achilles Tendinopathy; A more ongoing painful problem, that often gradually and slowly comes about. Characterised by increased thickening to the tendon and aggravated by increased stress on the tendon. These two sub-categories require a differing approach to solving them. Firstly working out what actual problem you have with your Achilles is a good first step to putting together a plan to rectify it. At Claremont Podiatry, our Podiatrists specialise in sports and musculoskeletal problems of the foot, ankle and lower leg. We are experienced in treating all types of Achilles tendon problems from correct diagnosis to long term treatment that solve the causes not the symptoms. To book an initial assessment call our friendly reception team on 6249 1155

08.01.2022 * ACHILLES TENDON PAIN * Despite its significant strength the Achilles tendon is injured with surprising regularity. During the push off phase of the running cycle, the Achilles tendon is exposed to a force of 7 times body weight. We have seen an increase in Achilles tendon injury in our recreational running population during Covid lockdown due to the inability to play sport, gym and do other forms of cross training. ... This has meant people have used running as the sole form of exercise. Sometimes this can lead to an overload of certain tissues in the body and injury can result. We often advise rest days, cross training, strength training and other load management strategies to reduce the probability of injury for our runners.
08.01.2022 Kipchoges ground-breaking marathon time of one hour, 59 minutes and 40.2 seconds captivated the world! He was wearing the Nike Vaporfly Next%, a specially designed pair of shoes, which features a "spring-like mechanism" that aids performance. The shoe also includes a carbon fibre plate in the midsole and its claimed they improve running performance, just how much is a popular discussion point! This doesnt appear to be just marketing hype and a serious look into the technology and properties of the shoe are well worth investigating!
07.01.2022 When treating an injury it is key to firstly offload the injured structure and then implement treatment techniques that aid in tissue repair. Offloading can include: taping, shoewear, innersoles (orthotics) and simply reducing your activity. Techniques we use to assist in tissue repair include: dry needling, shockwave therapy, soft tissue therapy and exercise prescription. It is fundamental that you have a structured return to activity program that includes BOTH these strategies! #running #runninggirl #getbackonyourfeet #footinjury #rehabilitation
