25.01.2022 Please forgive the multiple postings. If youre like me your heart sinks every time you see another news bulletin or announcement relating to the corona virus appear in your news-feed. Consequently, the picture Im putting up with this post has nothing to do with the text of the post. I just wanted to accompany the serious stuff with something to make us smile. But here goes: 1. Our phones are still playing up. Apparently the issue is widespread, and our service provid...er cant tell us an ETA on repair, so its incredibly frustrating. We are working on setting up a diversion, but that will result in fewer lines than usual being open. So please try calling on our normal number, but if you cant get through, we will be monitoring messages on Facebook and emails ([email protected]) closely. 2. We are taking extra precautions on top of our normal cleaning and sterilisation routines to help limit the potential spread of viruses. To the same end, we are more than happy to bring your food and drug orders out to you in your car. Just call, or stick your head in the door to let us know when you have arrived and well be with you as soon as possible. 3. If you have an appointment, we are also happy to have you let us know you have arrived, then wait with your pet in the carpark or in your car. When the vet is ready to see you well let you know and you can come straight through the the consult room. 4. We have hand sanitiser at the reception desk - please make use of it at the beginning and end of your visit. 5. We are not teleconferencing at the moment, but we will continue to offer a house-call service each Thursday for those who need it during the next few weeks.
25.01.2022 Meet Kayla! Kayla is Tassie born and bred, and grew up surrounded by animals on a property just outside Hobart. She always knew she wanted to work in the veterinary field, and it shows in the boundless passion she brings to her job. Kayla is particularly interested in in-patient care and pet nutrition. She has a gorgeous (but apparently not very brave) greyhound named Biggie, and a black cat called Jerry, who rules the roost with an iron paw. She joins us as a veterinary nurse-receptionist, and has fit in beautifully. Welcome Kayla - thanks for being part of the team!
24.01.2022 This year, ANZAC day is falling on a Saturday. We want to let you all know we will be closed to observe the day, and will be open again as usual Monday morning at 8.30am. If your pet requires urgent care over the weekend, the After Hours Veterinary Emergency Centre is reachable on 1300 302 912. ... We hope you all have a safe and happy weekend, and are holding up ok in these strange times.
24.01.2022 So, we got a bit behind on introductions. Don’t be alarmed, nearly all the old faces you know and love are still here. Emma, Dan, and Kate are still doing the vetting, with the essential help and support of the wonderful Kerrie, Kat, Chantelle, Stella and Kayla... However we have also recently welcomed aboard the very awesome Courtney, who joins us as a highly experienced and fully qualified Certifcate IV registered Veterinary Nurse. She’s also agreed to take on some managerial duties - thanks, Courts! She is a passionate animal advocate and in her spare time she enjoys netball, rock climbing, and walking her adorable Boston Terrier, Chip (aka Chipalicious, Chippapotamus, Chippysaurus Rex, Sir Chippington, we could go on ) Thanks for joining us Courtney! Fabulous to have you on board.
24.01.2022 ***UPDATE - good news everyone, Larry-Barry-Sheriff-Cougar is going to try out his new home tomorrow - thank you everyone for your help and interest!*** Every day at Claremont Vets were lucky enough to meet and care for scores of beautiful and beloved pets. But about three weeks ago we were presented with a creature who was not so beautiful, and not so beloved, and needed our care more than most. He was a stray cat, un-neutered and unmicrochipped, suffering eye and skin in...fections and with several broken and infected teeth. Sadly, like many roaming cats, he tested positive to FIV (the feline AIDS virus). Yet in spite of all this, he was from the very start the coolest, most affectionate cat you could ever have the pleasure of knowing. So for the past three weeks hes been our clinic cat (christened Larry, Barry, Sheriff, and Cougar by various staff members, who have completely failed to agree on a name! Though he doesnt seem to mind ). Hes been cuddled and spoilt while we treated his eyes and his skin, and today he was finally neutered, chipped, and had his teeth fixed up. Wed love to keep him forever, but he deserves a special home where he can be with people all the time. It has to be a home where he does not live with other cats, and where he can be kept strictly indoors only, to ensure he does not pass his FIV on. Hes not a big fan of dogs (after his time toughing it out on the streets this is not surprising) but he could possibly accustom himself to a quiet one? It also has to be a home with people who understand he may be prone to health issues in the future, due to his FIV status. (He does have mild entropion - a condition where his eyelids roll in a little so that eyelashes irritate the surface of the eye - but this has improved a good deal on eye ointment so we are delaying surgical correction until we are sure he needs it.) We dont know how far advanced his FIV is - and come to that, we dont know how old he is - so he may live for months, or for many years to come. We just want the time he has to be as happy and comfortable as possible. Hes a special cat with some special needs but deserves a lot of love - because he has a lot of it to give! If you have a secure, cat-free home and an empty space in your lap for this Good Boy, please give us a call.
24.01.2022 On Tuesday we met the handsome Roger who had been off food and vomiting for three days and concerning his owners. So we took some xrays and found some strange foreign material to be sitting in the stomach. Who wants to guess what it was we saw? ** I have posted and answer and a picture of what we removed in the comments. Roger is doing very well at home now. The picture is of him recovering at home after his surgery.
23.01.2022 Some happy news amongst all the gloom! A few Saturdays ago, staff at the Dogs Home arrived at work to find a scared but lovely young dog tied to their gate. They found she had a fish hook wedged in her lip, and brought her straight into us. Emma and Ahli were working that morning, and a brief anaesthetic was needed to cut the hooks shaft away and make a little cut in the skin to push the barb out. Little Fishy (as we nicknamed her) loved her cuddles as she came around from her anaesthesia. And all the staff here at Claremont Vets were thrilled to see this post from the Dogs Home today. Little Fishy is now safe and loved forever in her new home!
23.01.2022 A pet piglet, a daschund and an Irish setter off a serious handicap walk into a bar.... guess who comes last and misses out on the bar snacks. Watch this video to find out!
22.01.2022 Child Care at the Vets!! In these uncertain times, vet hospitals (which will be staying open) have been approved as temporary child care centres. Here at Claremont vets we have state of the art stainless steel cages, secure facilities and only mildly psychopathic nurses to provide supervision of your little ones. If we require sedation after dealing with your child =55$ If your child bites = 65$ If were allowed to bite back = free Please note that this service is for during business hours only. If your child is still on the premises at 5.15 pm they will be re-homed through the Hobart Dogs Home.
22.01.2022 Edited to say - We did it! Thank you so much for your support, YOU GUYS are the Best of the Best!! Hi everyone! What a crazy time these past few months have been. We hope you are all doing ok. Heart cat is sending you all the love. If you find you have a bit of love to spare, maybe send a little bit our way? We are in the running once again for HoFMs Best of the Best Vet competition. Meanwhile, thank you all for allowing us the privilege of caring for your beautiful pets. Be safe. 22.01.2022 Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas! This means we will have some days of closure over the public holidays. Some of our suppliers will be closed over this Christmas and New Year period. To avoid your pet running out of their much needed medication or food please check and ensure you have enough to last you over this period. If you need to order any medication or food please place the order by Friday 20th December as after this date orders will be unlikely to arrive within their usual time frames. Dispatch times should return to normal from the 2nd of January. Sophie and Charlie-Moses wish everyone a happy and peaceful holiday season!
21.01.2022 I want to tell you about Lexi the crazy Boxer. I hope most of you will be aware that chocolate is bad for dogs. And that dark chocolate is even worse, with high levels of theobromine, the toxic agent. Even small amounts can be fatal. Well, Lexi managed to eat a whole 250 gram block of cooking chocolate. Her owners rushed her in and she was given a special medication to make her vomit. Theres no doubt she was regretting some of her life choices. Afterwards she was fed some ch...arcoal which helps to absorb some of the toxins that have already made it into the system and Im pleased to report that this afternoon she was bubbly and keen to go home, probably to look for more delicious chocolate. In an unrelated event the wonderful Sandra Cooper made us all a chocolate cake. And since were all vets and nurses, no-one thought twice about standing round and eating it while the smell of dog vomited dark chocolate filled the room. Thanks Sandra!! See more
20.01.2022 We understand that amid Coronavirus panic buying some people might experience difficulty sourcing toilet paper. In the interests of helping out all of our clients we would like to suggest we consider all available options. After all, its a dogs life!
19.01.2022 We bring you this to stop you think about lockdowns and corona. Lily was found in a drain but now has a warm home and loving family and doesnt mind being stuck inside one bit. Be like Lily!
19.01.2022 We know how tough the 2020 toilet paper crisis has been. But here at Claremont Vets we are serviced by the great people at Hunters and we have tonnes of the stuff. So as a special promotion we are giving away a free toilet roll to all new clients for the rest of March. Look at how happy Marley is. He knows hes right to poo all weekend now!! Come in and get yours! (Em told me I wasnt allowed to post any more toilet paper humour but I told her... Im on a roll)
19.01.2022 Are you perplexed by the mass buy-up of toilet paper reported by supermarkets? We have been puzzling over it at work today. But it looks like Kerrie has decided its better to be safe than sorry! (Dont even know where she got this armful. Better check your bathrooms, I reckon!)
18.01.2022 A quick post! As of last Friday the Federal Government has deemed veterinary services to be an essential service so, yes, as far as we know we will be staying open. Most of our calls this morning are from people that are concerned we may be closing so I want to reassure you that is not the case. I will not go over tips for social distancing again, at this point you either get it or you dont use social media. Stay safe, limit non essential trips out, including to the vet. Cal...l us if you need to. The only change I would recommend is that if your pet is on important medication that you will need in the next couple of weeks, please give us a ring and make sure we have some put aside for you. Finally, being a teenager from the early 90s I dont believe there is a facet of the human experience that cant be covered by a Simpsons quote. Keep smiling Hobart. See more
18.01.2022 Two office chairs. We’ve upgraded and the girls want me to take these to the tip. But I spent so many years as a uni student I just can’t bring myself to throw them away. They look a little beat up but they are comfy(Especially the leather one). If anyone wants a free chair let me know.
18.01.2022 New years puppies! We saw 2019 out with a bang at Claremont vets. Nurse Ahli and Dr Dan went in early on New Years Eve to do a caesarean section on the beautiful boerbel, Shiva. I want you to guess how many puppies she had. A little later in the day we also saw the lovely German Shepherd Taylor, who had had one puppy but then got into trouble so we had another 7 healthy pups delivered by c section. Mums and pups are doing well, but keeping their owners incredibly busy.
15.01.2022 Happy Queens Birthday everyone. We tried to get Charlie Moses into the spirit of things, but as you can see by his expression he found our efforts rather tedious. Perhaps hes a Republican? Hes still making the most of the long weekend by going straight back to sleep on the couch. We hope you and your furry family members enjoy your day in similar style. Well be back on board tomorrow.
15.01.2022 Yes we are open! We have had many panicked calls this morning to ask if we are still operating! At this stage we are open and we have no plans to close. We will be abiding by any official government directives but I do not imagine it is likely that vet clinics will be instructed to close their doors. However, we can not stress enough that our ability to remain opens depends entirely on the health of our staff. We all unavoidably work with each other every day, so if a single... staff member becomes ill we will have no choice but to close for at least two weeks. So, as previously advised please help us by observing all reasonable steps to keep the community safe. Please use the hand sanitiser provided. Please limit the number of people bringing your pet in if possible. Please, when you arrive give us a ring to let us know you are here or pop your head in, you are then welcome to wait in your car until we come and get you. Finally, we are happy to arrange a home visit for standard consultations. We will be doing a regular run on Thursdays, please contact the clinic if you need to arrange one. Obviously, if you are stuck at home because you are unwell or self isolating, please let us know and we can make arrangements. Stay safe everyone! See more
14.01.2022 A Facebook page has been started to act as a hub for residents and businesses of the Northern Suburbs to connect with and support each other through these challenging times.
14.01.2022 Easter puppy pile. The bunny dropped these off at the clinic this morning. Guess how many puppies there are here!
13.01.2022 ‘Tis the season - for grass seeds and their kin! Poor Shadow developed an acutely painful ear this week and his family wasted no time bringing him down. An otoscopic exam revealed the culprit and with a quick sedation it was able to be retrieved by Dr Emma. No wonder he was sore! He’s now back to his happy normal self at home. But he’s likely to be the first of many - so cut your grass, check your dog’s paws and ears regularly, and enjoy your summer!
13.01.2022 As a general rule, Lafayette disapproves of dogs. However even he is purring up a storm to see that the Dogs Home have released their 2021 Calendar ! You can gets yours now from our beautiful receptionists at the surgery. Only $14 (cash if possible please, so we can keep things separate!) and all proceeds go straight to the Dogs Homes of Tasmania.
12.01.2022 We are all trying to be good about quarantine and social distancing. Who at your home or workplace is that one guy who just doesnt get it?
11.01.2022 How did you spend your lunch break today? Can you better Dr Kate, who spent hers cuddling with the adorable Nova? Nova wanted a bit of extra TLC after being very brave for an operation this morning.
10.01.2022 We are sad to announce that the lovely Ahli is leaving us to explore new opportunities. Tonight were sending her off in style. Well all miss her but we wish her all the very best for the exciting future she has planned! Stay tuned and well have a few new smiling faces to introduce soon...
10.01.2022 Deck the halls, keep a watch out for Santa, and hark for those herald angels! We wanted to let you all know we will be open over the Christmas New Year period, except for Sundays and Public Holidays. However, because this is a busy time of year with some local clinics closing for the week, we are not booking in routine procedures between the 24th of December and the 4th Jan. In that way well do our best to make sure were available for the pets that need urgent care.... This Saturday is our staff Christmas party and were taking a Pennicott Wilderness Tour! We cant wait. We will still open Saturday morning but well close a little earlier than usual at 11am, so that everyone can take part. After that we are open as normal until Christmas Eve.... Tuesday 24th - 8.30am to 3.00pm Wednesday 25th - CLOSED Thursday 26th - CLOSED Then open normal hours until: Tues 31st - 8.30am to 3.00pm Wednesday 1st - CLOSED Then normal hours resume. If you have an emergency outside of these hours please call AHVEC on 1300 302 912.
09.01.2022 UPDATE: Our phones, are back working normally again We are having some serious issues with our phones this morning. We are struggling to hear the other end and it has been dropping out. Possibly from all this rain! If your matter is not URGENT. Please feel free to send us a message on Facebook and we will call you back!! We apologize for any inconvenience.
09.01.2022 So, we got a bit behind on introductions. Dont be alarmed, nearly all the old faces you know and love are still here. Fabulous to have you on board.
08.01.2022 Everyone - admire Zeus, the goodest of good boys, who joined our nurse Kayla's Weight Watchers Club in August and has now lost a fabulous 8kg! Just like in their human counterparts, overweight dogs suffer a multitude of health issues, the most common of which is joint pain. If your pooch is a little porky, give us a call and we'll line you up for a chat and weigh in with Kayla - and we'll try and get them back on track for a long, healthy, active life!
08.01.2022 Hilarious toilet paper jokes aside, we do understand that these are worrisome times for a lot of people. Particularly for the older members of our circle of family and friends. With that in mind, we have decided to arrange (for a limited time only!) a home visit service. This Wednesday the 18th March, we will send one of our vets and a trusty nurse out on the road. If you need a vaccination or a check up for your furry friend, we can come to you. If you live within t...he suburbs of Claremont, Austins Ferry, Granton, Rosetta or Chigwell, then this will not cost you any more than it would to visit the surgery. If this is a service that would helpful to you, please give us a call - 62 895262. (We will have to be a little flexible on the day regarding appointment times as it will hard to know exactly how long each visit will take. EFTPOS will be available, and preferred.) Unfortunately if you pet is really unwell and requires complex treatment such as blood tests, hospitalisation, xrays or surgery, you are still better off coming in to the surgery to get them the care they need. Take care everybody...
07.01.2022 Thank goodness for Sundays! We wish you all a restful day... this gorgeous boy who came to see us on Friday is giving us a great example to follow ...
07.01.2022 Healthy choices in the workplace. Here’s hoping you all make the right decisions to start the week off!!
07.01.2022 Hello everyone it has been brought to our attention that our telephone lines are temporarily not working. If you need to get in touch with us please do so here for the moment and we will let you know as soon as we are up again.
07.01.2022 Merry Christmas to all our wonderful clients. Thank you so much to everyone who dropped in delicious gifts, we cant tell you how much we appreciated your generosity and thoughtfulness. Special thanks to Dans mum, who made us an epic cake to celebrate our THREE YEAR anniversary on the 19th December. Its been a big week. Time to raise a glass and say thank you all, and we wish you a safe and happy festive season with your families, furry and otherwise.
06.01.2022 Healthy choices in the workplace. Heres hoping you all make the right decisions to start the week off!!
04.01.2022 It’s been said before but we’ll say it again. It’s been a strange year. We just want to let you all know that we will be closed for tomorrow’s Hobart Show public holiday. Since there isn’t a show to support, we’ll be at home smothering our bemused pets with extra love. We recommend you do the same! (Phoebe and Lafayette are showing you how it’s done... )
03.01.2022 This is our Good Boy, Charlie-Moses. Hes very handsome and you can tell by the look on his furry face that he knows it! Hed love to be Glenorchy Gazettes Pet Of The Month but since hes such a close family member of the sponsors, hes not allowed! Poor Charlie. But dont worry, YOUR beautiful pets face no such hurdles. They can all enter! So send in a snap (and a small caption) to [email protected] before the 17th of February, and get them the accolades they deserve.
03.01.2022 Merry Christmas one and all - from all of us!
03.01.2022 So, after a long hard day at work yesterday when one of our patients who was being cared for at the after hours emergency service needed a blood transfusion our heroic nurse Ahli took her own dog in so he could be a donor. After spending hours in there with him she had three hours sleep before coming back for another full day today. Seeing this image today made us think of you. Well done Ahli!!
02.01.2022 *** UPDATE little Sophie is back safe and sound at home. Thank you so much to everyone who shared, what a massive relief for all involved. 01.01.2022 Recently bought the cat a play tunnel. Unwrapped it and put it on the floor, then went to put the groceries away. Turned around only to be faced with this! Great value toy, I figure! Fun for all the family.
01.01.2022 Warning Dog Owners!!! Temperatures are expected to rise to the hottest December day on record today. Dont allow your dog to become a hot dog! (Sorry couldnt resist.) With their undetachable fur coats dogs can be very sensitive to heat stroke, which can be fatal. And unfortunately they sometimes lack the common sense to stop exercising when they should. Chasing balls can be so much fun! So please in really hot weather, keep your dogs inside or in a really cool spot. Dont allow them to do a lot of exercise. Make sure they have access to unlimited cool water. Fill up the kids paddling pool if you can. Never leave them in a closed car and if they are panting constantly cool them down with some hosed water or a wet towel draped over them. And have a great new years everyone.
01.01.2022 Were all quite used to the idea of having very, very big dogs and tiny, little dogs. But we tend to think of cats being a pretty standard size. But have a look at two of todays surgery cases. The incredibly generously built Rupert and our tiny little rescue kitten. Can you guess how many time heavier than the rescue cat Rupert was? And have a look at him pre and post grooming from the amazingly talented Kerrie!
