23.01.2022 The only way to be sure that someone is reading your stories is to make a mistake or leave out a detail and this scribe did just that when reviewing the Grafton meeting last Tuesday worst part is he was chatting with the trainer after the race and spoke about how good it was to break through with a filly that had been a bit of a handful. It is fair to say that getting Holiday In Dubai to the races has been as far as you can possibly get from a vacation. When due to have her f...irst start last October Holiday In Dubai got a little hot whilst parading and was scratched by the stewards and had a warning placed on her. Since that time her trainer Wayne Lawson has worked overtime keeping her settled at the races and each time she makes a race day appearance there seems to be improvement. The mare was having her fourth run this preparation and had been hampered by bad alleys and bad luck at each of her three other runs. On Tuesday she was given a peach of a ride by Matt McGuren third the fence before McGuren got into clear air below the 200m mark to drive the mare to the lead shortly after and then find enough to win in a busy all Grafton finish. 19.01.2022 Melbourne Cup Week is the biggest week in Australian racing and Grafton trainers were out doing what they do best looking to train winners. At Coffs Harbour on Saturday it was Rip Sparkler prepared by Dan Want and ridden to perfection by Kirk Matheson which raced in vain before racing to the lead at the top of the straight to simply outstay his rivals in the BM 50 1600m. It was the second win for the former Victorian since joining the Want yard in 2019. ... Fast forward to Ballina and again Grafton had to wait until the final event of the day to find the winners circle. This time it was Fleur Blanch and Nanakorobi Yaoki which was on song to score a strong win in the BM 58 1250m. Ridden by Anthony Allen the gelding settled in a great spot stalking the leaders before gaining a run on the fence to edge away near the line and win with some authority. The win provided Blanch with her second win for the season and puts her two in advance of husband Scott who has had two starters for two seconds since returning to training. Perhaps the name Nanakorobi Yaoki seems appropriate in the Henley/ Blanch household because the Japanese proverb loosely translated means never give up and given their recent run of luck that was something they needed to do. 17.01.2022 With the CRJC preparing for its final race meeting of 2020 on Sunday it is the right time to report on racing at the last Grafton meeting. Scott Henley prepared his first winner since returning to the training caper when Boyles ridden by Anthony Allen scored an impressive victory in the Class 3 1410m. Boyles went forward shortly after the start to sit in a close second in a slowly run race before Allen went for home on straightening and from there to the winning post there wa...s no reason for concern with Boyles holding a good advantage in the end winning by almost two lengths. It had been an exasperating return to training for Henley who had finished second with his only other three runners in recent weeks. Cathy Chapman has been having a great season and it continued when La Cronica led throughout to score in the Maiden 1410m. Ridden by Ben Looker the daughter of Host had been placed at two of her previous four starts and with the step up in distance to 1400m was able to control things throughout and once Lokker pushed the go button at the 300m it was all but race over. 16.01.2022 On this site in the past we have outlined the work Jason Reilly does in an attempt to purchase horses capable of winning a race in the NRRA area and he was up to his old tricks again at Lismore on Monday. Crypto Fiorelli had been to quite a few homes in his fourteen start career and before last Monday had failed to ever run a place. He commenced his career with six runs in Victoria before a one start preparation on the mid north coast. This was followed by a trip to Dubbo and... four more starts before he then became a Queenslander for three runs. Recently Jason saw him as value purchase on a online sale and the rest as they say is now history. At Lismore on Monday the son of Fiorente was ridden by Allan Chau who took full advantage of his inside gate to give the gelding the run of the race on the fence just behind the leaders before getting between runners to stick his head down right on the line and get the judges nod. As the picture below shows it was a tricky finish with my spies telling me even the winning trainer thinking he had suffered a narrow defeat. Jason has had a great start to the season with Crypto Fiorelli providing him with his third winner from his last eight starters. Pic Crypto Fiorelli in the centre just wins. 13.01.2022 As you are no doubt aware COVID-19 infections still continue to occur in New South Wales. However at this stage we are still welcoming members, the general public and owners back to our race meetings. We are racing this Tuesday, 17 November 2020, with an eight race card, the first race scheduled for 1.35pm with the gates to open at 1pm. As advised members, general public and owners will be permitted to attend albeit with some COVID-19 restrictions that includes a requirement... that you pre-book. Those bookings are open immediately and can be made up until your arrival at the track. PLEASE NOTE THAT DUE TO THE COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS THERE WILL ONLY BE ONE POINT OF ENTRY WHICH WILL BE THROUGH THE ADMINISTRATION OFFICE. THE MEMBERS CAR PARK WILL BE CLOSED DUE TO WORKS BEING UNDERTAKEN IN THAT AREA SO STREET PARKING WILL BE NECESSARY. Whilst at this time it is not my intention to vary these requirements it is possible that the restrictions may vary given the circumstances around COVID-19 on any given day. We are confident that those members and patrons that decide to come to the races will have a very enjoyable day. We now know with the size of our venue the COVID-19 restrictions have not had a negative effect on the patrons ability to have an enjoyable day at the races and we look forward to welcoming you back to a reasonably normal racing experience. Thanks again for your continuing understanding and support. Michael Beattie - Chief Executive Officer See more

12.01.2022 Fleur Blanch spent her early years working for the elite of the Australian Racing Industry where it was nothing to send horses to multiple meetings in multiple states because you had multiple staff at your beck and call. I am guessing the operation is not quite so easy when you have a stable of three currently racing and they are spread across two states, with zero staff. Then throw into the mix a need to help out husband Scott with his runner at yet another race meeting and ...all sounds way to hard. Well this is how its done, dispatch Scott to Randwick with Nanakorobi Yaoki for the Highway handicap, problem one sorted. Then hot foot it to Doomben with Scott's runner Boyles in the Class three and then break the world speed record to be back at Aquis Park at the Gold Coast to saddle up two runners in the final event of the afternoon. For the record both Nanakorobi Yaoki and Boyles both ran great races without being placed so it all hinged on the last at the coast. Dark Euro ridden to perfection by Anthony Allen stalked the leaders throughout the 1300m BM 68 before diving between runners at the 150m mark to race away and win with some authority. Sugar Zone the other stable representative finished down the track after a wide run. I am sure as Fleur was unloading her runners back at Cuban Song Lodge well into the night there was a smile on her face and a feeling of job well done, but also the thought I might have do this all again in a couple of weeks to find the right races. The other good news Fleur has got away with a big lead in the very competitive house premiership. Pic Dark Euro dashes through to win. Photo supplied by Trackside Photography 07 32165685

09.01.2022 It seems at the moment if you want to bowl a maiden over than John Shelton is the man to do the job. Shelton added to his already difficult task of placing his recent Maiden winners in suitable Class 1 races when Magic Smile scored an impressive victory in the Maiden 1000m. Ridden by Luke Rolls Magic Smile showed plenty of speed from barrier rise to bounce straight to the front and was never really in any danger of defeat from that point of the race.... Magic Smile was having it first start for the stable after previously being under the care of Todd Howlett. Magic Smile was purchased by her current owner Jack McIntyre on the advice of Howlett who prepares other horses for him in the Hunter Valley. The Shelton yard has now produced four impressive Maiden winners during the month of October. Pic Magic Smile races away. Photo supplied by Trackside Photography 07 32165685

09.01.2022 The final Grafton meeting for the year was transferred to Coffs Harbour last Sunday due to the extreme heat but it was not enough to stop Grafton trainers coming home with a couple of winners. First to taste success was Andy Parramore when Fu Hao scored a solid win in the maiden 1000m. Ridden by Jodi Worley Fu Hao was slowly away but Worley quickly drove through on the rail to find the leaders back as the field settled down. Then in the straight angled into the open near the... 300m to race to the top and win with some authority. The win provided team Parramore with its third win for the season and was the first leg of a winning double for Worley who was already in celebration mode after having ridden a winner at Toowoomba on Saturday night. Grafton's iron mare Ilia ridden by Travis Wolfgram provided Shane Everson with the other Grafton winner when she was successful in the BM 66 1400m. The amazing 9yo mare was facing the starter for the ninety fourth occasion and was able to record her eighth win and take her career earnings to over $180K. There is little doubt many stables would have sent Ilia off to the breeding barn two seasons ago but whether it was sound judgement from Everson or fear of reprisals from stable staff only Shane would know. Ilia started her career under the care of Greg Eurell having just three starts in Victoria before joining the Everson yard just over four years ago. Ilia won at her first run for Everson in August 2016 and has won at least one race in every racing season since. To add even further merit to the performance on Sunday Ilia had never won a race past 1200m,never won above BM58 grade and never won with a male rider. Which only goes to prove the only rule in racing is there are no rules. Pic Ilia in full flight. Photo supplied by Trackside Photography 07 32165685

09.01.2022 Murwillumbah has never been a real happy hunting ground for Grafton trainers over the years but last weeks meeting put that hoodoo to bed in no uncertain terms. Shane Everson who has had some success at the Tweed in the past started the day well when the lightly raced Old Timing Man scored an impressive victory in the Maiden 1100m. Old Timing Man was having just his second run this preparation and his fourth overall but overcame an awkward draw to work his way to the front ne...ar the 800m. Jon Grisedale was then able to give the gelding a breather which proved to a winning move with Old Timing Man finding a kick on the home turn and plenty in the run to to the line to win well. The win continues a good season for the Everson camp recording four winners in the last 14 weeks. The next Grafton prepared winner came courtesy of Cathy Chapman when Sweet William proved to be just that coming from last to score a big win in the Class 1 2000m. Ridden by replacement rider Emily Atkinson Sweet William settled around fifteen lengths of the lead mid is race before Atkinson got on her bike near the 600m to begin a long and searching run around the field. Once heads were turned for home Atkinson headed wide and Sweet William quickly rounded up the opposition to win running away. Like Shane Everson the Chapman yard has been in great form with Sweet William providing the stable with its fifth winner for the season. Pic Sweet William sweeps down the outside. 09.01.2022 We all know the lady jockey rooms are normally pretty crowded places. In the main the reason is they were built at a time when there was only one or two riders to accommodate. Things have changed dramatically since the days of Julie York and Julie Shepard, two of the trail blazers for lady riders in the Northern Rivers back in the 1970's. now there are often up to ten lady riders at some meetings. For reasons we would rather not have the over crowding is not going to be the c...ase in the coming months. Lady riders in the Northern Rivers have suffered a horror run with injuries over the past three months. First to leave our tracks was Olivia Pickering who in mid August finally ceased riding to have an operation to a work related shoulder injury. Then at Grafton on August 31 Brooke Stower received a significant lower back injury in a pre race incident. Yesterday at Coffs Harbour Kasie Stanley received a significant injury to her wrist elbow and shoulder when Tee Lexus was involved in a one horse fall in the run to the finish. Kasie has been in Coffs Harbour hospital overnight but will be transferred to Sydney in the next few days for surgery. Racing NSW will ensure that like Brooke and Olivia before her Kasie will be in the best of hands. On behalf of all at the CRJC we wish all the girls well in their recoveries and we cannot wait to see you back at the races and doing what you do best booting home winners. 08.01.2022 With the Christmas racing over it is now time to reflect on how the Grafton Trainers went over the festive season. The first bad news was Bowraville was abandoned on boxing day with six Grafton trained horses which all looked competitive being left with no start. Ballina went ahead but victory there was limited to Ballina locals and those north of the Tweed River. The delayed Lismore meeting a few days earlier provided a much better result with both Dan Want and Jason Reilly ...coming home with winners. The much travelled Casino Fourteen provided Dan Want with his winner in the BM 58 1310m. Ridden by Kirk Matheson the gedling worked his way to the front by the 1000m and it was pretty much race over from that point with Matheson dictating terms to a nicety to race right away and win by almost five lengths. Whilst having only his second start for Want Casino Fourteen has had eight stable changes in his eighteen start career. Grafton's other winner was prepared by the online sales sleuth Jason Reilly when yet another graduate of that platform Franklin Corners more than paid for himself with a solid win in the Maiden 1210m. Ridden by Leah Kilner Franklin Corners did plenty of work in the run being three and four wide throughout before finding plenty under pressure in the run to the finish to win well. It was the third run for Franklin Corners for Reilly which had also been placed at his previous two starts to keep money in the bank for the next stable purchase.
