25.01.2022 .. 3 days to go ..
24.01.2022 The Beginner Band this year had not even had their first rehearsal when we went into lockdown. But, after hastily downloading Zoom, we began weekly on-line individual and group sessions which continued for three months until at last we were able to experience the power of playing together. A distinct advantage of enduring three months of one to one learning was the progress made in both skills and musicianship, all of which proved so beneficial that when we rehearsed together... for the first time, we began playing at the half way mark in our coursebooks well ahead of where we might have been otherwise. Since new beginners are virtually ‘teaching themselves’ to play their instrument, we try to organise tutorial sessions at least once a term for the instrument groups. These serve both to isolate and remediate any embouchure, fingering or breathing problems (which the conductor probably neglected) and also to enhance skills pertinent to the instrument thus broadening the players’ abilities and providing an added (and hopefully motivational) challenge. Beginner Band is more than just a group of instrumentalists, we seem to have formed a cohesive ensemble where co-instrumentalists help each other, play with each other and listen to each other. With only 13 in the group, we can afford time to focus on areas other than reading and preparing for performance. For example, we have looked at music styles and to date have dabbled in jazz, classical, pop and march as well as listening to and playing music from other cultures. Our group members have each written a line or two of music (some reluctantly) and have experienced the stress, or challenge, of improvising on 5 notes. We sometimes go a step further and analyse pieces, at a fairly basic level, to try and understand what the composer is doing and why; how the pieces are written and formed. All of this adds an element of emotional understanding which hopefully brings a better response/input to a performance. With a performance looming, we are playing around with ideas of how to make fairly easy and well-worn pieces of music work better for an audience. It might never happen as we would like, but getting players involved in interpretation and orchestration is very worthwhile and a whole lot of fun. Jan Kuplis Conductor **Our new Beginner band will start in the New Year. This is open to anyone who is in year 5 (next year) or older (including adults) who would like to learn an instrument and how to read music. Details of our 2021 Beginner band will be released soon.
