25.01.2022 Here's a story to inspire school students to really engage with non-academic projects set during their middle school years. What a fantastic achievement for this Mentone Girls Grammar student. Congratulations to Emily Tinker and BeeSustainable: Eco Food Wraps, a worthy recipient of the programs Enterprise of the Year Award 2018. https://www.fya.org.au//mentone-grammar-student-entrepren/

25.01.2022 I have been reading about the Business Council of Australia's (BCA) ideas around the funding of vocational education and their recommendations regarding "policy changes to create a culture of lifelong learning." This means that the vocational education and training sector is again under scrutiny, the intention of the BCA being that policy and funding decisions are made to improve learning opportunities. Talk to us at Clarify Careers if you need to find out more about the delivery of VET programs in high school and at post-secondary level. We can help your child to find the right career pathway.

24.01.2022 Dear Year 12s Congratulations on completing your final exams! You deserve a good rest and a fun break from study. We wish you all the best for whatever you are planning for 2019. If you are hoping to study we are keeping our fingers crossed on offer days and if theres anything we can do to help you with your next step in the process, please dont hesitate to contact us. 23.01.2022 In some European countries such as Germany, technical and trade occupations are held in high esteem. Its common to find young people there who have been offered university entrance, but choose to engage in apprenticeships instead. In Australia, we need to change the negative perceptions around vocational education and training (VET). Happily plans are in progress to help change our views. #VET, #apprenticeship, #Year12, #worthwhilecareers https://theconversation.com/we-need-to-change-negative-view

22.01.2022 Some of these stats are terrifying! At Clarify Careers, sometimes we encourage our students to pause and allow ideas to form, and reflections to happen. This allows creativity and innovative thought - something that many people seem to have lost the knack of doing. So before you reach for your phone or other device next, think about what other aspects of your life you're missing out on by filling it with unnecessary social babble.

22.01.2022 The final VCE exams are drawing near and year 12s can relax a little. Theyll go have some fun in Byron Bay and come back a little burnt just in time to receive their ATAR. Some will not need to do anything. Others might be wise to get a bit of support in considering pathway courses. Irrespective of your ATAR this number is simply a number that only has relevance to your tertiary applications, and in a short space of time it will be forgotten about. Dont let your ATAR define you. Talk to Karen or Katie about what your ATAR means for entry into courses in 2019 and how to organise yourself for 1st round offers in January. Email us at [email protected]

22.01.2022 Here is some important information regarding the testing for entrants into undergraduate degrees in medicine. Please contact us to find out more about the new UCAS test at [email protected]

22.01.2022 An important life-skill is social intelligence. This is acquired over time, and obviously some people are significantly better at implementing it than others. Here are some useful tips to remind us how we can cultivate better social intelligence in ourselves. #personalgrowth, #betterinteractions https://www.verywellmind.com/what-is-social-intelligence-41

20.01.2022 Last chance to change your preferences before the first round offers come out mid-Jan. If you need help - please get in touch asap!

18.01.2022 Exam season is also stressful for parents! We have had parents reaching out this week for support, reassurance and advice. As the exam period gets closer, I urge you - parents - to check in with friends who have children sitting exams shortly, to let them know you are there, and to be an ear to listen to them if needed. #examseason, #kindness, #careercoaching

18.01.2022 Love these real-life examples of applied scientific &/ technical ideas to help solve practical problems. Here's what the CSIRO have done for cardiac patients. #practicalscience, #careerchoices, #clarifycareers https://bit.ly/2AOFDiN

17.01.2022 It’s been a big week. The Orygen Youth Mental Health Conference yesterday and the annual CEAV conference today. Youth Mental Health is a supreme concern for 21st century Careers Practitioners because Career confidence and clarity have a positive effect upon feelings of wellbeing, purpose and hope. Talk to us by emailing [email protected] to find out how our practical and holistic approach and interventions can support your child.

16.01.2022 ATARs are released by VTAC this morning. We are happy if you are happy, but if your ATAR is not quite what you needed, please dont worry or rush into deciding upon any preference changes. Contact Karen or Katie if you have any questions. [email protected]

16.01.2022 A useful reminder of what's out there post-school. Worth a quick check to see if you are able to access support in one form or another. #Year12students, #schoolleavers, #supportforstudents

16.01.2022 A great morning interviewing some of the Yr9 boys from St James College, East Bentleigh as part of the Whitelion iPrep program. A well prepared and delightful cohort! I like this message I found on a poster in the library. #interviewpreparation, #volunteering, #destiny

16.01.2022 Here's our latest blog from our website. This time I have written about how we can support schools in making the best use of new Career Education Funding for careers work. Our experience tells us that dedicating time and reliable resources to individual coaching prior to year 11 can make an enormous difference to a student's career clarity. If you would like to discuss this concept with us, please email via [email protected]

15.01.2022 Having finalised your tertiary applications now and your study is well underway, when you need a quick break, read through these suggestions of possible summer jobs. It's a US website so ignore the $ amounts, but hopefully it'll generate some ideas for your summer activities. #summerjobs, #studentjobs, #makingmoney https://www.thepennyhoarder.com//100-summer-jobs-for-teens/

15.01.2022 A discussion on ABC Radio National's Breakfast show focused upon loneliness. The Labour party is proposing to create a Minister for Loneliness, such is the crisis in Australia. Young adults are said to be lonely to such an extent that this is impacting their mental health. Social isolation can be crippling and in no small way is social media responsible for some children feeling that they do not belong to the group. Youth unemployment is another factor, and we know that this ...group is over-represented in Australia's unemployment statistics. If your child, or young adult is feeling the effects of social isolation there are ways in which individual and case-based career coaching can help. At Clarify Careers we can support your child in finding out how to: participate in volunteering; find a mentor; network, and find employment. Contact us at [email protected] to find out more.

14.01.2022 As we enter the final term for Year 12 students across the country, here are some timely reminders of how to keep stress levels under control during the exam period. Good luck to everyone studying for exams! #year12students, #tertiarychoice, #examstress... https://www.youthbeyondblue.com/do-someth/surviving-year-12

13.01.2022 Are you addicted to your smartphone? France has banned smartphones in their schools with effect from the new school year just started, to help students focus, and has taken this step because it believes students are becoming addicted to mobile phone use. Is it a problem in Australian schools? Should smartphones be banned here too? What do you think?

13.01.2022 If you've recently been invited to an interview, are you prepared to answer competency-based questions? Do you know what is expected from a group task? How will you stand out from the crowd? These are real issues for students as they prepare to enter the workforce. Talk to Katie or Karen at Clarify Careers if you'd benefit from some interview coaching. #interviewcoaching, #workpreparation, #careercoach

13.01.2022 Extremely proud of our publication that we have been working on for the last couple of weeks. We are keen for Victorian State schools to hear about our professional career coaching services. We offer reporting on Morrisby Online, Career Fast Track and Strong Interest Inventory career resources. These are so helpful if used well and this is where we excel. If your school needs additional career coaching support at peak times during the academic year, contact us at [email protected]

12.01.2022 "Heated" career discussions between parents and students can be a huge source of confrontation for both parties. Here are some helpful tips that will ease your way. #tertiarystudy, #schoolstudents, #VCEpressure

10.01.2022 What is a Side Hustle? I didn't know until this morning's edition of Best Practice. Here is a great story about a lady who wasn't feeling too thrilled by her work, and so decided to relieve stress by making chocolate. The next thing that happened was a chocolate glut in her kitchen and so this lead to her "Side Hustle", or simply put, her job-on-the-side. We talk in careers about Portfolio Careers; that's when we earn money doing a number of things and in today's world of wo...rk it has never been easier to be entrepreneurial. Social media makes it easy to advertise for free! What's your Side Hustle? For one of my clients it was her silver jewelry making. Another makes devine 'bra-lettes'. So if you have a talent for singing, make-up, knitting, or any unique skill, how about embarking upon a side venture. Talk to Karen or Katie about how you might find that thing that you love and how to turn it into a job. Contact us at [email protected]

10.01.2022 Super impressed with the hospital simulation facilities at Holmesglen Moorabbin campus for their Nursing Diploma & Bachelor students. A useful Careers Practitioner day learning about the 40 or so free TAFE courses that are being offered here in 2019. Excellent lunch too! #freetafe, #practicalcourses, #realskills, #nursing

09.01.2022 Clarify Careers is no longer trading as a business entity, however Karen and Katie can be reached via their business websites. www.karenyourcareercoach.com.au www.katieadlerconsulting.com

06.01.2022 The debate about public vs private schools funding will undoubtedly continue, and here are some interesting stats just released to add to the debate. The benefit of additional funding for careers in Victoria's public schools from 2019 will start to impact students and we'll see better career & tertiary education choices being made. That's a positive impact! #schoolfunding, #careersinschools, #careercoach https://www.abc.net.au//counting-the-cost-of-the-/10495756

06.01.2022 Its been a big week. The Orygen Youth Mental Health Conference yesterday and the annual CEAV conference today. 05.01.2022 Results day is finally here (well, tomorrow!) and of course we hope that you are happy with your results. Again this year, we'd like to reassure students that your ATAR result is not the be-all-and-end-all, so if it's not what you had hoped for, all is NOT lost. That's why we, and other career coaches around the state and in schools are here to help you work through what options are available to you so that you can start studying next year, confident in the knowledge that what you've now chosen will provide a valid career path. Please reach out if you need help over these next few days: [email protected]

05.01.2022 To clarify, VTAC's deadline next Thursday, 27 September is for 'timely submissions' & eligibility for the discounted fee level. It IS still possible to submit your course choices after this date, although the fee is increased. If you're applying to interstate institutions, you'll need to check out the same details with each State's Admissions Centres. So, don't despair if you're still unsure of which courses to list in your VTAC application, there is still time. Contact Katie or Karen at Clarify Careers & we'll help you navigate through your choices.

04.01.2022 It was good to hear Jan Owen from the Foundation for Young Australians (FYA) and Andrew Norton, from The Grattan Institute, both talking on Radio National this morning. The discussion was around the value of a bachelor degree and whether in fact this is the qualification that employers are seeking. This was a timely conversation, as just last week a young client of mine was offered a job that asked, in it's key selection criteria, for a bachelor degree. My client did not in f...act have this qualification, but met pretty much all of the rest of the requirements for the role. She had worked in a number of positions and had proven results that made her the perfect candidate. Tertiary education and training is really important for the acquisition of skills and knowledge, however there are a multitude of pathways to career success. Talk to me, or to Katie Adler, about how we can help you or your child to make sense of all of the options for higher education study or training, by emailing [email protected]

02.01.2022 A friend was recently hired as a Qantas flight attendant on international flights, and I asked her what the facilities were like for cabin crew on those long journeys. If you're wondering too - check out these pictures... #aviationjobs, #flightattendant, #internationaltravel... https://tinyurl.com/y88kf8s4

01.01.2022 This is great news for Australian and international applicants commencing study in 2019. To be recognised in the Times Education Rankings is great recognition of the University of Melbournes general world standing. However, choosing a university or other training provider needs thorough research, as it needs to be the right fit for your child. Contact us at Clarify Careers to find out how professional career coaching can support this important decision-making. Email us at [email protected]

01.01.2022 I can think of few better ways to spend some free time in the summer than at the beach, and having nothing more demanding to do than pick up a book & read, uninterrupted, for a couple of hours. If you're lucky enough to already be at the beach, or on the way there, then here are some recommendations for that precious down-time. Happy reading!
